Asking advice - which stock tyres for Y62 Patrol?

Recommended Posts

It’s time for a new set of tyres on my 2017 Y62 Patrol. I’m reluctant to go straight for the Bridgestone Dueller which are fitted as stock, I’m thinking about something with more light off-road capabilty such as the BF Goodrich Trail Terrain. Stock tyre size is 275x60R20, I don’t want to make further modifications to the car just yet so aiming to stay with stock size for now, but more off road capability than the Duellers would be great. Any advice appreciated.

Hi @Adrian Lane

Even though the Bridgestone Dueler is a HT tire, they are definitely not bad for light off-roading, especially in sand.

Can i ask what kind of off-roading you are planning to do? Wadis and mountains? Or desert?

If you drive in sand only, the Dueler will be absolutely fine. The main problem is the big rims (20inch) which means the tire sidewalls are quite low (60). Ideally it would make sense to try to fit a 275x65x20 but i am not sure if these can be easily found in the market.

Thanks Federic, I appreciate your advice. My off road trips are equally sand, wadis and mountains and, whilst I’m aware that the Duelers are OK in the sand, I’m not sure how hard wearing they will be over sharp rocks. I am thinking that the BFG’s might be a better alternative in this environment. I have been thinking that the 275x65R20 might be a possibility, but I have read various conflicting opinions about them rubbing on full lock. Once you start modifying the stock vehicles then all sorts of issues start to arise and we end up spending far more than we had originally planned for. I have looked into 18” rims, 2” lifts etc etc but my budget was spiraling out of control. Therefore I have decided to stay with stock everything for now but hopefully having a slightly higher spec tyre. Thanks again for your input, much appreciated.

You are right, the Duelers are not really made for sharp rocks. And yes, STOCK is less headache :)
