I thought this was an old thing? They’re going round the garages in Al Quoz now putting stickers on the windows of dusty cars parked outside. Would be nice to see people actually washing their cars rather than wiping the dust off with a rag. The sheer number of nice cars I see here with scratched and swirled paint make my teeth itchy.

The series 2 Disco is a steaming pile of dung, no doubt about it, but it has a certain character about it. I drove a 300 TDi for a while. It was super unreliable. Had to bypass the immobiliser system just to get it to run and rust was eating into places I have never seen before. Anyone who says aluminium can’t rust has never had a Land Rover before. Horrendous turning circle too. I used it to pull a car transporter trailer and I was forever getting stuck in tight places. But hate it? No. It was a nice place to sit and pretty quiet and relaxed on the open road.

The only reason they only last a few years is because they aren’t maintained properly and people don’t give a shit. Go to Europe and you’ll see plenty of 15 year old Peugeot, Citroen and “Ford of Europe” still on the road and working perfectly.
-
Some of the European members may remember this one. Renault Fuego Turbo. Very cool car to own back in the day. Extremely rare now due to the rust factor. Even the GTX model is hard to find now and commands a premium price.

Now I finally understand the meme. Yes, it’s a jeep thing, and no, I don’t understand.

We all know that unbelted passengers can fly around the car in the event of an accident and kill other belted people in the car. What a lot of people forget is that other unsecured objects can fly around the car in an accident and kill people. Here is the story of a 3 year old girl who was killed by her iPad flying round the car after an accident and cracking her skull. https://news.sky.com/story/girl-3-dies-after-tablet-computer-hits-her-during-car-crash-11510044 I really wish the police would take more action here on unbelted rear seat passengers (children). It’s not about the children dying, it’s about all the people they will kill when their bodies are flying around the car. This first simple step needs to be addressed before we even look at unsecured inanimate objects. I know a guy at home who got a broken neck after he was rear ended. His toolbox was in the back seat and flew forward after the impact and hit him in the back of the head and broke his neck. Luckily (unfortunately, he was a dick) he survived. There is either a lack of awareness or a lack of care towards these things in UAE.

I’d love to hear some opinions and see if we can find the most hated car on carnity My nomination goes to the Nissan Tiida. In my opinion, the most horrible, bland, vanilla POS to ever grace the roads. The later cars don’t even have a temperature gauge. When your car is overheating, the first warning you get is a red coolant light on the dashboard and by that stage, the damage has already been done and the cylinder head is warped.

In the rally world there is a thing called the 5 second escape and every driver has to master it before racing As soon as the impacts are over/you have finished rolling, you have 5 seconds to escape the car, even if you’re upside down. Orientate yourself, release your seatbelt/harness, grab your fire extinguisher, grab important belongings and maps where applicable and get out of the car. Sounds easy but I’ve practised it a lot when I was navigating and it can be quite difficult. The hardest part is the initial orientation, especially when you’re hanging upside down by a harness and trying to ignore a concussion. Would be nice to see something like that implemented into newbie off-road driver training. Useful information. Get your shit together and get out of the car instead of sitting there panicking.

Honda Beat. On the border between Kei and full size car. Holds the honour as the last ever car signed off by Soichiro Honda before his death in 1991.

I was expecting to see someone boiling water and making tea. Close.

Yeah, if I don’t find something cheap secondhand, I’ll go to gitex with the missus. A few deals online at the minute but nothing to make me go crazy. That will all change next week though. I’m looking for a new iPad and MacBook too. Personally I just run Linux on any old laptop I can find but she loves her apple stuff.

Paper Tickets No Longer Accepted for Commuting
Barry replied to Car News's topic in General Discussions
The Nol card is great, I love it. Can use it to ride the train and bus, pay for parking, even buy snacks and cigarettes in zoom. A lot better than carrying bits of paper and handfuls of change. -
Bit random but I need a tv and I’d rather deal with the people on here than the *swear words* on dubizzle. Send private message

No experience of Oman insurance but one thing I’ve learned, all insurance companies are good until you crash. Find out what garages they use for accident repair and check the garages out. There are plenty that send out to the cheapest bidder which means unskilled labour putting parts on with arc welders and spraying paint in spray booths with the doors wide open.

Mid mounted? That makes it a sports van! I was doing an engine conversion on one of my Subaru’s and borrowed my uncles Nissan Serena to go to work for a few days. It was a 2.3 diesel. No turbo or anything. 75 BHP trying to pull 2 tonnes of van. I complained to my uncle that it was too slow. He said, shut up, the engine is in the middle, it’s a sports van!

In other news, fuel in UK has risen to 6.25 dhs per litre. You people don’t know you’re blessed. @Gaurav I don’t think people will start getting into dinky cars like the i10, but I can see people starting to drive more sensible cars in the 1.6-2.0 range, which to be honest, is more that adequate for the roads here with speed cameras every few hundred metres. I can’t see people letting go of their V8s but rather keeping them for weekends, unless they’re in good jobs with 20k+ salary. Nostradamus I ain’t but that’s my experience in my driving days seeing fuel prices jump from £15 a tank to £60 a tank from when I started driving to I came to UAE.

Police fine 150,000 AED for taking photos of an accidents
Barry replied to Car News's topic in General Discussions
I feel bad for any of his family that had to see that. It’s one thing watching a video online seeing someone’s guts spilling out but a lot of people forget that’s someone’s child, mother, father, brother, sister, aunt, uncle.- 4 replies

Sometimes you need to take pictures of accidents as evidence. Completely agree about not posting them on social media though. Nobody wants to be scrolling and see their wrecked car.- 4 replies

Does 2008 Pajero has timing chain or timing belt?
Barry replied to Sidshk's topic in Mitsubishi Pajero Forum in UAE
100% it’s a belt. I don’t know about the eclipse, never worked on one but as @Gaurav said, the later Evos had a chain. In such a case, the chain still needs maintenance at 60k. It’s not a case of change belts but chains are always ok as many people think. Chains stretch, especially on newer cars with VVT where there is extra strain on the chain. A stretched chain can easily see you with bent valves or broken rockers.
