Giacomo has been promoted to Intermediate level
Frederic replied to Gaurav's topic in Off-Road Club's Announcements
Congrats @Giacomo!! -
A nice morning out! Everyone made it on time, and after a short briefing we hit the dunes with a good pace over the various rolling dunes the area has to offer. With hardly any refusals and no stucks, we reached Pink Rock itself very quickly, and took our first break with the fantastic views it had to offer. I decided to head further south towards the various bigger dunes that lay on our way towards Big Red. As my trusty Trooper had been in the shop for 5 weeks, this drive was for me a bit of a shakedown and i had to keep a close watch to the engine temperatures. Luckily everything was fine. We did various climbs, loops, and sideys, and everyone managed brilliantly. While i was contemplating to head over to Big Red, @Vijaya Kumar Doppa his daughter was feeling unwell, probably from the rollercoaster effects passenger undergo on these kinds of drives. I hope she is feeling better now and can join us again in the future. We still had some time left while taking Vijaya to the exit, but i decided not to push our luck by heading towards Big Red, as i knew that area requires multiple high-powered climbs and the temperature was inching closer to 40 degrees now. We exited all together on a drive that was a bit shorter than my usual drives, but that also meant it was still doable to inflate, and perhaps some of us could go and enjoy a breakfast @vinayak n you were brilliant as second lead, always keeping enough distance and reacting quickly whenever i had to do little reroutes. @Ishak you had an easy job today, so you can save your energy for next week's leaders lead @J-P L was my original sweep, and i was sure you'd been fine sweeping us, but @Imteeaz was the second sweep today and it was a great sight today to see a Jimney and a Patrol closing our ranks like brothers in arms. 🧑🤝🧑 With the summer temperatures increasing we will need to be mindful of our cars, as the strain of climbing bigger dunes at +40C degrees is quite taxing on our cars. I've been in this hobby for 8 years now and learned when to push and when to let the car cool down. During both breaks we took, my engine temperature dropped from 96 quickly back to 88, and that helped a lot to tackle the last bigger dunes before we exited. I recommend everyone to keep a close watch on your engine and transmission temperatures coming summer, and if in doubt to get it checked out. See you all in the dunes again soon! Drive Plan A drive aimed to explore a bit more the overlanding style of off-roading, covering quite some distance by using moderate sized dunes and existing trails. This is not a dune-bashing drive. We will start from the Faqa plains, meandering our way through the farm trails, and crossing the way into Abu Dhabi at the well-known Truck Road. From there we will head down south through Al Ajban, finally ending up in the North of Sweihan. We request every member who joins this drive to go through the information below and strictly follow these guidelines, etiquette, and responsibilities. RSVP IS NOW CLOSED @vinayak n@Myrko@Lukas Lewis@Kirill K@[email protected].@Zsolt@JC_E@Yurybel@Vijaya Kumar Doppa@Carl Stanley@J-P L Thank you all for signing up! As you are probably well aware, the heat has started to kick in already, which means some precautions will be in place. 1) Please arrive by 5.45AM so you have time to deflate and set up your flag. I'd like to get the convoy moving by 6.10AM latest. Please be on time guys. 2) The aim is to have a decent paced drive and to cover quite some ground. That will surely help to keep the cars cooler. 3) Keep a close watch on your heat gauge throughout the drive. Do let us know immediately if you see any signs of overheating. 4) The overall terrain choice might be a bit altered to avoid constant pushing of the vehicles especially towards the end of the drive. We will be using Channel 4: 446.081Mhz as our radio channel to communicate during the drive. See you all tomorrow morning !

Yes, go for 265/70/16. Perfect setup for your SWB Pajero. Bigger tire size might have rubbing inside the fenders with the original rims.

Don't get HT tires (Highway). Get the AT tires (All Terrain). Yokohama Geolander G015 model is very well known and performs great on Pajero

Emanuel has been promoted to Advisor level
Frederic replied to Gaurav's topic in Off-Road Club's Announcements
@Emanuel behind that super calm demeanor there is a true leader. From the start you've been a team player and were always willing to help out. Even though you fast tracked your way in the White Rino (customization wise i mean 😁) you've done plenty of drives and your skills show for it. I have no doubt the Leaders Lead Sessions will be a delight for you, and i am very much looking forward to be your second lead soon! (Finally the role gets reversed). Yallah! -
Ishak has been promoted to Advisor level
Frederic replied to Gaurav's topic in Off-Road Club's Announcements
@Ishak your attitude has been visible to us from the start. You never shy away from teamwork and helping out on every drive. I remember a drive where my coolant hose popped off, and before i knew what happened, you and @Dodi Syahdarwere already climbing in my engine bay and fixing the issue 😀. You've also worked on your drive skills and improved massively. Nowadays i see your Pajero floating over the dunes, completely in tune with the terrain. Extremely impressive ! I am sure you will excel in the Leaders Lead Sessions, and will make a brilliant lead very soon ! -
Luke K P has been promoted to Advisor level
Frederic replied to Gaurav's topic in Off-Road Club's Announcements
@Luke K P you've been a colorful presence from the start. First with the Pajero, but now with the beautiful Orange Ranger Raptor. Your positive energy and calm demeanor is an absolute delight for people who receive guidance from you. I am sure you will absolutely love the Leaders Lead sessions, and before you know it, you will have the honor of driving all the way in the front, guiding one of our convoys, and enjoying the magnificent feeling of creating your own tracks. All the best of luck ! -
That's great. Don't give up on her. You should indeed always follow the lines of the vehicle in front of you, but during a climb you can deviate a little bit (20-30cm to find fresh clean sand). If you have HT tires, better not to go below 13psi. If you have AT tires, you can go a little bit lower up to 10-11 as long as you don't steer agressively. Always make smooth turns. Double check you tire pressure as well with a second pressure gauge (different brand or type) as we have seen up to 1.5psi deviation amongst many models. I would not clean the cat converter yet, this is not so common and would only be potentially useful for a car with very high mileage (how much is your mileage)? Try to get the spark plugs replaced and injectors cleaned. That usually helps a lot more. Also, keep an eye on other 3.5 Pajeros in your convoy, and have a chat with the owners. Perhaps even a small test drive in their car can reveal if there is really something wrong with the power. Yours is a SWB so it's already 250kg lighter than a LWB. @Mehmet Volga used to lead drives even in Sweihan with a LWB model, and that car was amazing (and stock). Apart from that.... momentum....momentum......momentum.... Build up speed to climb hills. It will never be a Raptor, but in the right hands you will drive in Liwa without issues.

Found the LIWA drive video from Feb2020: That big sidey started at 2.30 with attempts from most. -
What Was Your Most ‘Oh No’ Moment in the Desert?
Frederic replied to Mike M.'s topic in Off-Road Club's Discussions
your video is set to Private. My sidey was not too far away from Yellow Truck. I might be able to find which dune it was. -
In my opinion, the 3.5 is definitely not underpowered if it's in a SWB model. Of course, the 3.8 will give you that extra punch. If you have purchased that Pajero recently i would recommend to verify a couple of things which might optimize your power. It could be that some horses are sleeping in the car. 1. All fluids (transmission, differentials, engine oil, coolant). When were these last done? 2. Injectors. Have they ever been cleaned? This can transform many sluggish cars back into their previous power specs. 3. Spark plugs. When were they last replaced? The original ones are fine. 4. Tire pressure: better flotation on the sand will mean less power needed to climb. Get some AT tires which are not too heavy and drive on 10-11psi. It will definitely improve. 5. Use of D vs Tiptronic. I always found the D setting on the Pajero transmission to be slow. Once i moved to using Tiptronic and especially when climbing, it kept the car in the same gear and i could go full out, while in D it decided to upshift or downshift at all the wrong possible times. 6. Cold air intake makes more noise, not a lot more power on Pajeros. If there are any gains they will only appear on the top end range and will be marginal in my opinion. 7. Car could be lazy from previous owner. Drive it more in the sand and make it stretch its legs

What Was Your Most ‘Oh No’ Moment in the Desert?
Frederic replied to Mike M.'s topic in Off-Road Club's Discussions
Something i learned from my mentor @Gaurav: 1. Visualize your entry and exit points before attempting. 2. Once you commit: do not hesitate (this could result in panic steering or even braking)... At the end we all like to "play" with nature, and sometimes when we are being overconfident, it will gently slap you on the wrist. At that point in time, be humble and respectful. That's why ego cannot have any place in offroading. -
