Every off road driver must know: why you get stuck?
Javier M replied to Emmanuel's topic in Off-Road Club's Discussions
I think he had not enough momentum to go to the top of the dune There was a sand pocket that made him lost even more momentum I remember we could not even make it to the low part of the dune with the momentum we had I think that he hesitated to give more gas and steer right once the car sank- 39 replies

My dad had a garage after he worked for Ford, GM, etc. so I grew up in the car assembly lines and all my life saw how cars were put together, fixed or modified. Back home I used to do modifications and maintenance to my cars like installing turbos or changing the brake pads, etc. but here I only do some minor mods. I don't have time now after work or weekends when I have to do all the honeydos. I do have a computer so I if there is something wrong I can check it out myself and maybe repair it if it's not very time consuming.

Questions Regarding FJ Cruiser Suspension Lift
Javier M replied to salim12's topic in Toyota General Discussion Forum in UAE
I would say to wait and save so you can upgrade to something better with adjustable trackbars and control arms once you are more experienced. Answering your question, the answer is simple, a 2 inch lift won't mess with the center of gravity, typically something above 3 inch would be of some concern, but even then, if it is done properly it would not cause issues. I agree with @desertdude spacers are not a good way to go I think they are just for looks but it wont really improve the drive. -
I will try to upload today, it takes some time to put all the videos together and upload them do to the size. I just received a higher capacity memory card so we will see your Cherokee in 4K next time. 😀

Today I would like to talk about the cold air intakes. From what I can see in some threads in this site there is some controversy on whether they are worth it or not. What are Cold Air Intakes 🤔 How to pick a good intake 🤩 Where can you buy one 🤑 What to expect from Cold Air Intakes Personal choice In my opinion they are worth it, however, not all cold air intakes are made equal, you will get different results based on the design of the particular intake you choose. But let's back up a little to understand what cold air intakes are: What are Cold Air Intakes 🤔 Think of a factory air intake system as like having a cold that clogs up your head and restricts your breathing. Now go running. It's not going to work very well is it? A cold air intake allows your engine to finally breath. Cold air intakes move the air filter outside of the engine compartment so that cooler air can be sucked into the engine for combustion. Cooler air brings more oxygen (denser air) into the combustion chamber and that means more power. The filters are usually moved to the upper wheel well area or near a fender where there is more access to free flowing, cooler air and less hot air from the engine. Not only does a cold air intake reduce the air temperature, but it also increases airflow. Aftermarket intakes remove the need for a box surrounding the air filter and instead use large diameter intake tubes that are smoother, have less bends and are often wider than the original factory ones. Removing the air box and using smoother tubes gives the engine uninterrupted airflow. See the example below, this is the stock intake of a Jeep, look how restricted it is!, all stock intakes regardless the car model are meant to be restrictive on purpose, why? - Well, it really has to do with reliability and making sure no dirt enters the engine, the problem with this approach is that the engine is always working with lower oxygen levels than with a cold air intake. 2. How to pick a good intake 🤩 In order to look for a good design you need to make sure you move away from the stock design, this means you should look for a less restrictive design, in my opinion these two below are bad options because there is not much difference between the stock and these two, I am not say you will not see some benefits, but you will not be taking as much advantage as you would with other designs. In my opinion, the simpler the better, the less restrictive the better, you should be looking for similar designs with exposed filter like these two: The filter type (dry or wet) does not matter as much as the intake design as this will make sure constant cold air goes in the engine. 3. Where can you buy one 🤑 There are many places in the UAE you can buy them, it will all depend on your vehicle and budget, here are some options: Argoob.com Ramy ICON Auto Off-Road Zone I usually buy from the US from carid.com or rockauto.com because they can ship to the UAE with no issues and the prices after shipping tend to be very similar to the UAE prices, with the advantage of getting a far more superior product than the limited selection in the UAE. 4. What to expect from Cold Air Intakes Be realistic, don't expect to have a 500 HP beast after installing one of this. The typical HP gain is around 6 - 15 HP depending on the weather conditions etc. (If you see them advertising more than 15 HP they are cheating you). 5. Personal choice For my Jeep I picked the Injen cold air intake, the reason I picked it was that it is a well known brand for performance parts, and they had the perfect design for my particular application. Since I was going to go off-road and a lot of sand is in the air, I needed something that was not restrictive and yet had extra layers to filter the sand. So I picked this design, this is not a closed design like the ones I showed you above, but instead the walls are made of filtering material (see last picture).

Will do @Srikumar

I don't know if you can pass RTA with the cone filter but you can pass it with the cold air intake. I just did RTA renewal and passed with no issues with my cold air intake. 🤔I must admit I thought they were not going to to pass it.

I almost did not make it to this due to the short notice as I had already some commitments for the afternoon. Luckily I was able to move them for the morning before the afternoon drive. Unfortunately I won't be able to join the morning drive, sorry @Rahimdad.

Definitely go for the flush next time. The miles are high so there might be some residue.

What model and car mileage?

I would go with a cold air intake they already have the filter and will add more horsepowers to your car

I am posting this just in case some of you are facing this issue in the future because this is a very common issue for all FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) owned brand cars like Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram. When I originally bought my Jeep probably a week after I started hearing a clicking noise coming out of the dashboard, I would hear it when I opened the door or when I was driving the noise would come up all of the sudden, one google search after and everything pointed to the AC recirculation actuator or better called A/C Heater Blend Door Actuator, one quick sear in autozone.com and I had the part number (604-029) and the price $27 USD (around 100 AED). I called some shops and even the dealer and they all gave me the UAE "premium" price of 600+ AED literally five times or more of what the actual price in the US was. I called some shops explaining what the issue was and most of them said they needed to take a look at the car, which is pretty reasonable but I just did not want to waste my time with shops that were not familiar with this issue. Since I was convinced this was actually what was wrong with the car I decided to order it from the US. (- NOTE: I am not advising you to just buy it, I would advise you to take it to your prefered shop to confirm this is the issue). One week later it arrived and just took it to the shop and told them to install it and voilà! I never hear the noise again.

What did you enjoy about the drive? The desert track. Which part of the drive you think you enjoyed the best which you would like to repeat? Going down Fossil Rock Do you think there was a good mix of lecture and practical, was the lecture too long, and any part that can be avoided or done in a shorter or different way? I remember thinking the lecture was very slow, it took a long time to go through the points, maybe if a video is created with all (or most of the points) and ask that all the newbies (or everyone) to watch it before the trip would make things faster at the briefing site. Perhaps asking some questions to make sure they watch the video. Do you think anything else could be added to the lecture? It is pretty comprehensive as it is already. Do you think prior reading material would help? Yes, it is not only about having fun, it is also about taking it seriously for everyone's safety. Would you know where on the Carnity forum you would be able to find the information you are looking for? Yes, although I mainly use the forum to share the little knowledge I gathered while growing up around cars being designed, fixed and tested. Is there anything you think could be done in a better way? I would suggest to make the briefing a bit faster. How do you suggest to make things better for the new comers? How do you think you can progress within the current atmosphere and learning opportunities provided? Have a presentation video of what carnity is and what to expect during the drive, and what is expected from them. Or just some written literature they should read before joining the drive.

That is a very basic question for every car owner that unfortunately not a lot of people pay attention to, but it is not only applicable for the oil. It is applicable for anything related to the maintenance/upgrade of your car. For me the short answer is yes I make sure is the specific brand I want is used.
-
From experience I prefer Lucas oil, but since it's hard to find in the UAE I prefer Mobil 1.

It is hard to know exactly without know the specific Pajero Model but this extract from the Pajero maintenance manual is useful I would suggest to do the following: Replace timing belt (if any) Replace spark plugs Replace spark plugs cables Replace transmission oil Engine oil: SAE 15W-40 will do the job (fits temp range from 0C to 50C) Transmission oil (assuming is automatic): Type: NL: Dexron 2 30-40 seconds is too much time - the average time it takes the oil pump to distribute the oil is 10-12 seconds but the oil is designed to stick to the surface for a long time and there are spaces in the engine that will prevent the oil from slipping off from important (moving) parts of the engine. Having the AC on or off would make no difference at all.
