  1. So bottom line... we can all agree Jeep Wrangler is the best.. yes? okay good I am glad we all agreed 🤣
  2. That's a great question... 🤔 Short term: I haven't decided yet probably one of these (or all): A roof rack so I can later put one of those roof tents (or maybe just get a trailer) Fender Flares Still thinking about putting metal bumpers (they are heavy so I'm still thinking if it is worth it) Long term: Supercharger - (one day baby... one day...)
  3. It would really depend the intended use of the shock. There are nitro, oil and foam shocks for on-road and off-road use. Gas/Nitrogen shocks are oil shocks with added gas. The purpose of the gas/nitrogen in the shock is to keep the oil under pressure so it is less likely to foam (bubbles). The foam makes the shock to loose some of it's absorbing properties. Nitrogen is a really bad heat conductor helping on keeping the shock cooler. This is why the foam shocks will always run hotter than the other two types. Depending on the shock brand it is well known the foam shocks will eventually give up when used off-road because of overheating. There are some brands specialized in foam off-road shocks but I have never used them. At the end, they all use oil, the just took different approaches on how the oil interacts with the up and down motion.
  4. Just tell them they need to change the blinker fluid.
  5. Today I would like to talk about that tool that you might not think about too often until you have a flat tire or a pop out and you are on the side of the road or some place in the desert. There are over 8 different types of Jacks! But for our purposes we will focus on the 4 main types of Jacks Scissor Jacks Hydraulic Jacks – these include Floor Jacks and Bottle Jacks Hi-lift Jacks – also known as a High Lift or Farm Jack Exhaust Jacks Scissor Jacks A scissor jack is perhaps the most common type of jack you may have encountered as these jacks come with your car! Pros: Scissor Jacks are lightweight and reasonably small, making them easy to store and use for the average consumer / car owner. These days there are even electrically operated scissor jacks available that run off your vehicles battery. This makes jacking your car up to change a tire a very simple process. Cons: They are incredibly unstable, they are also very slow to use as you have to turn the screw quite a few times to get any meaningful height out of them. If you have a tall vehicle or you will be going off-road then you need to look somewhere else, this is not the jack for you. Floor Jacks With floor jacks the arm of the unit is pumped repeatedly. This pumping action sucks oil out of the jacks oil reservoir and forces it into the lift chamber, creating an increase in oil pressure and resulting in the saddle arm of the jack rising and lifting your car. Pros: These jacks are far superior to scissor jacks as they take much more punishment, wear and tear and rarely if ever fail, even after decades of use!. They even sell them without the wheels to be used off-road (see below). Cons: Look at the size of that thing! not all of us have space for our off-road equipment, camping equipment and this massive thing. Bottle Jacks Another type of hydraulic jack that you may be familiar with is the bottle or whiskey jack. So named as its physical appearance resembles an old fashioned whiskey jug or bottle. The bottle jack has a single lift rod, which acts as a piston. Cons: One major drawback is its collapsed height is usually only half that of its extended height, this means its unsuitable for many regular vehicles. When using on a vehicle many people like to use a block of timber to help cushion the impact on the cars body of the relatively small (in comparison to a floor jack saddle) point of impact. Pros: Is ideal for vehicles with higher clearances, such as trucks and 4wds. The range of height is much less than a garage jack as well, but once again for vehicles that already have high ground clearance this isn’t a problem. They are usual more robust, take up a lot less space in your vehicle when compared to a floor jack and can safely take more weight. Hi-Lift Jacks (Widow makers) Hi-Lift Jacks, also known as High Lift and Farm Jacks were originally developed for farm work, they are made of a pair of climbing pins, that climb the height of the jack (sometimes as high as 2 meters) by a ratcheting action, achieved by a manual pumping mechanism. Cons: The jacks are not suitable for conventional vehicles, you need to have steel bumpers and/or rock sliders to use this jack, they will sink in the sand, they are super dangerous if you don't know what you are doing (see below). Pros: There are no hydraulics to fail nor cranking of an undersized bottle jack to raise your vehicle. Simply plant the jack under your vehicle, place the foot of the jack under a secure anchor point on your bumper or rock sliders, and then, using the long round lever, start cranking. Exhaust Jacks The exhaust air jack lifts a vehicle using emissions coming from the tailpipe. A hose attaches from the exhaust to a big sack placed under the car. The air coming out of the pipe fills the bag, and voilà! The car lifts off the ground. Cons: This is meant to be used with 6 or 8 cylinder vehicles, it may not work with 4 cylinders because there is not enough engine compression to lift the vehicle. If you have a dual exhaust you can't use this. Pros: The sack is placed anywhere under the chassis, so no jack points are necessary. Since the gadget is basically a big balloon, there's no need to center it under a particular spot on the car. This works perfectly on sand.
  6. Any of you tried Optima? specifically Yellow top. Back home Optima is my go-to battery but I don't know how it will behave in the UAE's weather conditions specially while offroading in the summer.
  7. I'm sorry I am going to miss the drives on this day. The wife is finally coming on Friday so I better be in the airport 😆 I am a morning person so I actually prefer morning drives, that way I can still take care of personal matters after the drive. But I don't mind afternoon drives as long as they are on Friday
  8. I am with @Frederic on this one. I am assuming you meant the Jeep JK vs the JL, the later being the newest version of the jeep. It would really depend if you will be using the jeep off-road or just for daily commute. In a few words 5 speed is better off-road and the 8 speed is better on highway. The 8 speed claims to reduce fuel consumption by 9% over the 5 speed transmission but I doubt it is for the transmission, I think is because JL has an aluminum body as opposed the steel body of the JK, making the JL lighter and therefore improving fuel consumption. I think that for on-road driving will definitely benefit from the 3 extra speeds since you will run in lower revs. However, when it comes to off-road keep in mind this 8 speed transmission is used in the Ram 1500 and Grand Cherokee, cars that are not necessarily made for off-road like the Wrangler this is a transmission that is not properly tested off-road. They are only installing this transmission for cost purposes and they are not thinking about the reliability. In off-road conditions simpler is always better, unless you use the 8 speed in triptronic it will be under much more stress than the 5 speed.
  9. I have been there once, pictures don't do it justice. Its a shame no cars are allowed in there, unless you'd like to go to prison. 😁
  10. So I have never used the recovery dampers but it seems they do the job (if done properly). Have you used them before? what are your thoughts? Keep it safe my fellow off-roaders!
  11. So I used to receive many fake whatsapp text from the "lucky Etisalat draw" asking me to give them my IMEI and other information to "prove" I was the winner. This goes without saying that this is a scam. Anyway, I changed my phone number some months ago and all those texts and calls stopped. (Or so I thought) Yesterday I started to receive again weird calls from Indian fellas asking me about something that I did not understand given their thick accent, at the end since their scam call did not succeed they just hanged up. Then I also started to receive whatsapp text from "my bank" saying my card was blocked and that I needed to contact the phone number listed in the text to unblock my card. By this point I just had it with this, I was not going to let these criminals be unpunished and contacted the police. I gave them all the information and the police called me to make sure I did not fall or was victim of these scams, then they thanked me because I reported these people. Please, please, please report any of these sort of calls or texts to the police. This is the only way you can make sure there are no victims. They have a very simple tool, all you need to do is go to http://ecrime.ae and follow the steps it will not take you more than two minutes.
  12. My two favorites, the Ford GT 40 and the Nissan Skyline (aka The GTR)
  13. I have two friends that fall in this category, I just call them mall crawlers. I always prefer function over form specially in off-road where a lot of things can and will go wrong.
  14. Let me present to you the Baja 1000. This a 800-900 miles race in the State of Baja California, Mexico. This is done every year since 1967. It allows various types of vehicle classes to compete on the same course with classes for cars, trucks, motorcycles, ATVs and buggies. My dad was asked to build two cars for 2010 truck class (it won 1st place) and 2011 buggie class (it won 2nd place). We used to go every year to watch the race.
  15. I am of the opinion that you don't need it, specially here. But fake snorkels? Really? 🤣
  16. Lately I cant help to notice that there are quite a few number of cars with snorkels. I cant help looking around me and see sand. I have driven offroad in other countries for many years and never in my life have seen the need to have a snorkel for my car and yet here in this sandbox we all call home I see plenty of cars with it. Do you really need one? has the amazons magically appeared somewhere in the UAE? I know there are some rivers here in the UAE but does it really justify to restrict the air intake of your car? I was just wondering since I am fairly new to the country
  17. I dont want to say but lets just say it is more than all of you combined 😭
  18. It's a shame they wont sell the Focus RS in the UAE. 350hp of pure beauty.
  19. I have plenty more where that came from 😊. Watching movies/Series are my hobby. I have a huge collection of VHS/DVDs/Blu Rays back home. A few years ago I had spine surgery and I could not move from bed for months, I spent all that time watching whatever was interesting no matter the genre or year.
