Drive Brief Little Sweihan is one of those areas relatively close and easy to reach but packed with large and complex dunes, big bowls, steep climbs which make it perfect for a short midweek Intermediate drive. We will start our desert blitz at 5.15AM from the Solar Park Tower and make our way straight to Little Sweihan heading quickly south via a 9km stretch on dirt track, long enough to get our cars covered with dust. We will then enter Little Sweihan from the south edge and spend a good couple of hours enjoying the wonderful terrain there, while slowly but steadily moving west until we reach the fence along which we will move back north, reaching the long range dunes on the south west side of Solar Park first from where, after crossing the sabkha and the pylon track, we will continue with another stint of long range dunes making our way progressively towards Bab Al Shams, where we will exit no later than 8.15AM, hopefully recharged for the remainder of the work week. General Infos This drive is organized in full compliance with the COVID19 guidelines. We expect every member that joins this drive to go through below information and and strictly follow these guidelines in order not to jeopardize someone's health, and to ensure we can keep organizing these drives safely. DRIVE REPORT Dear Desert Wanderers, Yesterday's drive in Faqa was no doubt an extreme one, but for reasons that went well beyond the original objectives for the day. We started on time, as everyone made it to the meeting point early enough, except for @Shehab Alawadhi who unfortunately overslept and missed the drive entirely. We entered the desert quite on the north edge of Faqa area and very soon had to face a very unfortunate double pop-out at the bottom of a slip face by @Christian Andras, whose tires were very new and probably not yet fully molded to the rims and not yet tested for the ideal deflating pressure. I was sorry to see Christian bailing out after this unfortunate start, I think he might have given it one more try as @Ale Vallecchi was also suggesting. Having a pop-out is a bit of a shock especially if it happens for the 1st time when you are already an experienced driver, but it is always worth going through something like that, as it is part of the indispensabile wealth of expertise that can only be built by hard lived real situations. After sadly leading Christian back to the tarmac, the convoy made its way again in the desert but soon after I was betrayed by a nasty bush at the bottom of a slip face and had my first pop-out of the day. After quickly fixing it (thanks for the help to everyone) we kept going and splashed into a very long stint of acrobatic driving on the increasingly high dunes in Faqa, keeping a high pace and a high level of difficulty, further enhanced by the soft sand that would be greatly churned up by the first vehicles in the convoy. Climbing those very high dunes along the crest and then deep diving, nose down, on long and steep slip faces or criss-crossings at high speed coming from either the wind or slip face was no easy exercise and required, in some cases, quite a good degree of faith that everything would be fine on the other side which was beyond sight.. Everyone did incredibly well, given the challenges. A few physiological stucks and refusals only proved that the drive level wall was a real extreme one, where even the best Carnity Intermediate drivers could occasionally find difficulties up to their level. @Ahab Shamaawas a great 2nd lead, getting more and more comfortable in the complex maneuvers we would make and always promptly responsive to my instructions or holding when I had a refusal. I didn't get to see much of what happened behind, as I was mostly focused on the way ahead. I was occasionally able to loop back and have a look at the convoy riding along the crest and coming down a slip face, however: @MUHAMMAD Kashif RAZZAQ in his yellow JL followed with great attention and precision. A couple of long climbs gave him a hard time, but he eventually made it to the top. @Shaaz Shasurely enjoyed the drive as everytime I got near to his car I could see him smiling from ear to hear. A very good performance with very few refusals. @Tero Vallaswas also very inspired yesterday and pushed his car to its full potential, finding its limit in a nasty bowl where he needed a small tug to get back on track. @Rizwanm2sweated his way through those big dunes as everyone else, certainly getting to know better his car's limits. @Francois Germishuys was a caterpillar as usual at the back, flattening every crest except the one where he had to be winched out from a delicate position. @Ale Vallecchiat the back was of great support in assisting during the stucks and refusals and, from what I could understand from the radio, had to drive in an incredibly churned up sand, which was at times very tricky even for such an experienced Marshal. Talking about caterpillars, it was really an annoying surprise to see how multiple bulldozers were creating multiple tracks across the sand spoiling one of the most intact and beautiful areas in Faqa. It was quite a disturbing feeling to drive around crossing those ugly (and bumpy) tracks and seeing those huge beasts roaming around. Due to the 3 pop-outs and the multiple stops for stucks and refusals, when we exited Faqa we were a bit behind schedule. It was therefore decided to extend the drive so we could make it to Solar Park. We quickly moved east but we were again delayed by my 2nd pop-out of the day, the stupidest possible one, occurred on a dirt track when I hit a bush while distracted looking at the navigator. After a quick fix, we then started to head north when we unfortunately found ourselves dealing with a very nasty fence, mostly hidden under the high dunes. Some of us managed to criss cross at a point where the fence was totally buried, but it became more and more difficult as the convoy got through, as the fence was getting exposed. It was then decided that @Ale Vallecchiwith the last few cars would explore the fence from the south side to seek for a safe passage, while the front of the convoy would run in parallel on the north side. It was at this point that the incredible happened, and Ale ended up literally on top of the fence while trying to criss cross in an apparently safe point (hopefully someone will post some photos!). The recovery was quite demanding as we had to secure the car from the side with one winch to prevent it sliding further down while with the other winch we pulled it from the front disentangling it from the fence. In the end it all went well, Ale was out with minimal damage and we could move again. After a minor roaming around Little Sweihan, where another winch recovery was needed to get @MUHAMMAD Kashif RAZZAQout of a crested situation, we decided it was getting too late and too hot, so we hit the sabkha and made our way to Solar Park via a fast dirt track north. Overall we drove 95.9km in 5h 23', with an average moving speed of 23.1km/h. We moved for 4h 09' and stopped for 1h 14'. Out ascent was +250/-305m. It wasn't the luckiest of all drives, but certainly an extreme one in many ways. Congratulations to everyone and great thanks to @Ahab Shamaaand @Ale Vallecchi for their support and to all those who helped fixing pop-outs and performing recoveries. Great team work. See you next time!!

Drive Brief Every Carnity off-roader has driven multiple times around Mahafiz and Fossil Rock and is quite familiar with the area and the landscape. What almost no one knows is that just a few more kilometers north from that area is a wonderful stretch of terrain, quite technical and with a beautiful landscape, so little known that there are practically no tracks at all in this area even in the busiest off-roading days. A hidden gem this Intermediate Drive is meant to unveil. We will start at 5:15am from the roundabout between Al Bataeh Road and E102 Sharjah - Kalba Road near Ibn Rashid village and head north-east, making our way through an area of very complex dunes and very soft sand, that will require all the technical experience of an Intermediate Driver to overcome, especially considering that we will be making our way from the slip face. We will roam around the place for quite a while, enjoying the long ranging and yet everything but easy dunes in the area and the beautiful views from an elevated position towards the sabkha on the north east side and the further dunes behind. We will progressively make our way towards Khorfakkan Road, cross it via an underpass and continue our journey to eventually make our exit in Al Bataeh, completing this exciting drive in a completely new area. General Infos This drive is organized in full compliance with the COVID19 guidelines. We expect every member that joins this drive to go through below information and and strictly follow these guidelines in order not to jeopardize someone's health, and to ensure we can keep organizing these drives safely. Private drive incident
Lorenzo Candelpergher replied to Thomas Varghese's topic in Off-Road Club's Offroad Drives
Dear @Thomas Varghese, sorry to hear the news. What happened? -
Dear Desert Wanderers, this RSVP is now closed. Please find below the convoy order: @Ahab Shamaa, @Thomas Varghese, @MUHAMMAD Kashif RAZZAQ, @Christian Andras, @Shaaz Sha, @Tero Vallas, @Shehab Alawadhi, @Francois Germishuys, this drive is going to be very demanding, both technically and mentally for the drivers and mechanically for your vehicles. It will require your full and undivided concentration at every step, as the pace will be extremely high and the technical difficulties quite significant. We will take some occasional brakes to let you rest a bit and allow you to take a quieter breathe, but please make sure that you come absolutely well rested and that you don’t have any reason for being distracted (if you plan to take photos, please do so only when we stop and secure your gear so that it doesn't become a concern during the drive, if you plan to take videos, please fix your gear, start it and then forget about it). Secure very strongly everything else you will have in the car otherwise it will be flying all over and again it cannot become a distraction. Please remember that we absolutely discourage bringing any passengers along with you. We will be using Carnity Channel 2 (446.03125MHz). See you on Saturday morning, ready to go (i.e. already caffeinated, deflated, flagged and briefed) by no later 5:15am (sharp), so make sure you make it to the meeting point at least by 5:00am.

Dear @Christian Andras, @Shaaz Sha, @Tero Vallasand @Ahab Shamaa, I'm glad to confirm your are all eligible and therefore confirmed for this drive. Dear @Thomas Varghese, you are as well eligible for this drive, but under the strict condition that your vehicle has no known and unresolved issue of any kind before the drive, as the frequent occurrence of electrical and mechanical faults in recent occasions is reason for some concern in view of this very demanding drive. Since this is your 2nd drive, your are waitlisted and will be admitted on Tuesday subject to availability and furthermore subject to confirmation of full electromechanical fitness of your car on Friday.

Dear @varunmehndiratta, while you may have the required nominal number of drives, for your own safety Carnity Advisors would prefer to see you taking a few more Intermediate Drives, so your driving skills can be assessed more thoroughly in light of your interest to join Extreme Drives and consensus can be reached on your eligibility. I look forward to having you join my next Extreme Drive!

Drive Brief The stretch of land at the border between Dubai and Al Ain (Abu Dhabi) on the South Eastern corner of the Dubai Emirate, the Faqa area, offers one of the most spectacular terrains for adventurous off-roaders that may be found in the UAE. Long, high, complex dunes are so widely spread that, once entered, the biggest problem in the area becomes deciding where to go, as every dune is incredibly appealing, and when to leave, as this is one of those places true off-roaders fall in love with and never want to exit from. We will enter the desert on the North East end of Faqa area, not far from the E44 Al Ain - Dubai Road at 5.15am and head South West. After a short but fast stint of technical dunes, we will enter the majestic area of Faqa big dunes. It will be in this area that the drive will become a real "extreme" one: the convoy will go through a rapid sequence of climbs along sharp crests, long slide slopes on completely virgin dunes, rapid criss-crossings and deep dives nose down on slip faces, alternated with the exact opposite move, ie high and steep slip face attacks and criss crossing to the wind side. The rythm will be constantly fast (very fast), the technical level constantly high (very high), altitude will be maintained always as high as possible, with adrenaline levels going through the roof, while maintaining a very high level of concentration and focus, all of this between bursts of awe at admiring an equally breath-taking landscape. Participants will have a chance to put to the ultimate test their driving skills and cars will be stressed to their full capabilities, which - to be clear - means driving to one's very best, not at all driving recklessly!! As we will move South West, we will eventually exit the Faqa area and begin our approach to the milder dunes of Little Sweihan and South West Solar Park, where we will eventually make our exit by indicatively 9:15am, hopefully exhausted but enthusiastic after a "fast and furious" drive. About "Extreme" Drives Extreme Desert Drives are an extension of a Intermediate drives but at a lot faster pace with a continuous drive-time on big rolling and difficult dunes. The difficulty level of climbs, ridge riding, criss-crossing will be more or less the same as the Intermediate level, but doing that over and over again at high speed requires special attention, to be courageous but with extreme caution. If you and your vehicle are perfectly in-sync with the Intermediate level without repetitive stuck, refusals, or losing track, then only you should consider joining this fast-paced extreme drive. This drive offers the maximum adrenaline among all the types of drives and also demands a very experienced and sensible driver with a fully protected 4x4 vehicle. In such extreme fast pace drive, it is highly recommended to drive alone without any passengers to avoid any distractions. Who can join: Selected Intermediate and above drivers (with a minimum of 5 Intermediate drive experience). The final selection will be based on Trip lead and Marshals feedback. Disclaimer: the chance of damaging your vehicle is quite high in such fast-paced extreme drives, so please join at your own discretion. General Infos This drive is organized in full compliance with the COVID19 guidelines. We expect every member that joins this drive to go through below information and and strictly follow these guidelines in order not to jeopardize someone's health, and to ensure we can keep organizing these drives safely. DRIVE REPORT - Convoy 1 Dear Desert Wanderers, There is nothing better than driving across completely virgin dunes and today was certainly one of those occasions where the sand couldn't get any better. Everyone made it to the meeting point by 5 am, with no misunderstandings about which of the two Carnity Convoys to join. A missing bolt held @Russ from fixing his flag, which took a bit of time to sort out, so we could finally hit the sand by 5.30am. As we started our move into Mahafiz Desert, heading East, we could enjoy the sun slowly rising from behind the skyline of Fossil Rock, always an inspiring view. The terrain was very tricky due to the multiple bushes scattered all over the place. We nevertheless made our way in, reaching the first two playgrounds in no time: the two nice and tall bowls offered the convoy a great opportunity to safely practice some serious side sloping. We then continued to move east and, after I got suck on a crest in a moment of hesitation (thanks to @GauravSoni, @Dodi Syahdarand @Lawrence_Chehimi for the shoveling), just before reaching the 3rd big playground bowl, we had the first serious setback for the day, an unexpected and unfortunate pop-out by @GauravSoni, which however turned out to be a nice learning experience for all those who had never seen one and even less witnessed how to repair it. This little delay accumulated with this pop-out unfortunately made it impossible to respect the plan hatched with @Anish S which was supposed to have the two convoys reconvening at designated meeting points / times during the drive. Convoy 2 ended up always being ahead of us, very often in visual distance, but never close enough to be reached. As soon as we could move again after fixing the pop-out, we made our way to the 3rd playground bowl of the day and then to the Long Dune, which the convoy exploited sidesloping from North East to South West with great fun and then admired in its majestic beauty while driving by in the opposite direction. From there we quickly found our way to the Pylon Track and immediately started the epic ascent to Fossil Rock. Unlike most of the other times, the sand on the way up on the West side was not too badly churned up and the sand cover on the East side was thick enough to allow us to attempt a breath-taking descent, brilliantly executed in 4LO 1st gear by the whole convoy. As we made our move again from the bottom of the rock, the second half of the drive, the most exciting and challenging one, in Faya, started. Progressing on our way to the massive dunes of Faya, we drove along a spine of rocks emerging from the sand and perfectly aligned, connecting Fossil Rock to Camel Rock and The Sphynx. The terrain was just fantastic compact sand with no tracks: we couldn't have asked for anything better. As we got closer to Faya, refusals became a bit more frequent, and we decided to move @Antoz in 2nd position so he could benefit from following directly my line across the most demanding stint of the drive. Unfortunately, both my son Michelangelo and @Antoz's passenger started to feel some motion sickness at this point, so we took a short break to allow them to get some fresh air. As we happened to be, at that point, right in the middle of Faya's complex dunes, we had no immediate easy exit, so we proceeded south to reach the famous Faya bowls and, eventually Faya Big Dune, close to the exit point. When we reached the top of the big dune from the back, we could see once more Convoy 2 playing around with @Ranjan Das and @Darren Brooke in the middle of their attempts to make it to the top, under the vigilant eyes of @Anish Sand @Islam Soliman. As we descended to the bottom of the dune, Convoy 2 was making its exit, so we had the whole place for us: the convoy spent some good 20 mins climbing Faya Big Dune from all sides, with many successful attempts (I can remember those by @Lawrence_Chehimi, @Dodi Syahdar, @Kenneth Bollhardt, @JeromeFJ, @Batuhan Kulac, the others who made it to the top will forgive me if I won't mention them). In the end we exited by 9:30, after driving for 45.6km in 4h 03', at an average moving speed of 16.9km. We covered an overall ascent of +476/-430m, which means we really climbed and descended a lot. Everyone did very well today: @Lawrence_Chehimi@Russ, @Antoz, @Magellan, @Dodi Syahdar, @Kenneth Bollhardt, @JeromeFJ, @Batuhan Kulac,@topgear@GauravSoni, congratulations for a very good drive and special thanks to @Dodi Syahdar and @GauravSoni for their precious support. See you next time in the sand!

Dear Desert Wanderers, the RVSP for this drive is closed. As anticipated, we have defined TWO convoys, one led by myself (convoy 1) and one led by @Anish S (convoy 2). Kindly make sure you know which convoy you have been assigned to, as the meeting points will be different: @Lawrence_Chehimi, @Russ, @Antoz, @Magellan, @Dodi Syahdar, @Kenneth Bollhardt, @JeromeFJ, @Batuhan Kulac, @topgear@Lakshmi Narasimhan, @GauravSoni, the meeting point for Convoy 1 led by myself will be at Mahafiz Trees Shade https://goo.gl/maps/dtw94UrW6Kn99YB18, approx. 200 meters inside the desert on the east side of Mahafiz - Faya Road. @luis mantecon, @Chinthaka Ruwan, @Alain Canivet-Abikhalil, @Adhir Saxena, @Ranjan Das, @Darren Brooke, @Rawad Bahsas, @Chris Wing, @Probir Mukherjee, @Islam Soliman, the meeting point for Convoy 2 led by @Anish S will be directly on the west side of Mahafiz - Faya Road https://goo.gl/maps/oZRTdHTDF4Bt3tYm6, i.e. on the opposite side than that of Convoy 1, but close enough for anyone joining the wrong convoy due to lack of caffeine at 5am to quickly move to the right one. The terrain in this area can be tricky, with many bushes (in the initial part, when we will drive in the twilight) and patches of very soft sand and some technical passages. Accordingly, this drive will require your full and undivided concentration at every step, so make sure you come well rested and fully hydrated and that you don’t have any reason for being distracted. Also, please consider carefully if you wish to bring passengers along with you. Convoy 1 will be using Carnity Channel 1 (446.00625Mhz), while Convoy 2 will be using Carnity Channel 2 (446.03125MHz). I was tempted to invert the channels as a way to test how awake all drivers are, but I finally thought it's better to spend 15 more minutes driving rather than sorting out our radios.. See tomorrow morning, ready to go (i.e. already caffeinated, deflated, flagged and briefed) by no later 5:15am (sharp), so make sure you make it to the meeting point at least by 5:00am.
