  1. Out of sight out of mind. @ASAD. I too forgot to mention how nicely you drove because i was looking at the convoy list to mention the names - and yours wasn't on it. Well Done buddy and thanks for the help with @Thomas Varghese pop out as well.
  2. As @Shaaz Sha mentioned the first fifteen minutes of the drive had a complete radio silence, something must have broken with the radio I thought, but soon it came to life and did not stop till the end. It was a cloudy morning and a good day to have some pop outs and refusals - so we thought and @Thomas Varghese was in a hurry drafting the drive report in his mind after a couple of pop outs; one of which needed a tire change for @Mohamad Anwer and one for @Thomas Varghese where his huge 3 ton jack was put to good use both times and then @Anoop Nair's car gave a mild shock when it refused to start for a brief moment. At that moment I told him not to hurry by announcing the conclusions already lest it jinx the drive as we were not near to the end. And soon enough @Tom B had quite a scare. Good for @Tom B that after a brief moment of adrenaline rush, he calmed down. I too had an experience with such a recovery when I was supporting my first drive as support staff with @M.Seidam and had an idea what needs to be done. I and @Ashok chaturvedi tethered the vehicle with our winches as @Tom B gradually corrected the angle and brought the car down to ground, with guidance from @Shaaz Sha. It ended with a battle scar that he can be proud of which was fixed with some duct tape naturally. Overall, it was the day for the Pajero-s of @Simon Dawood and @Mus_hus78 who were just chugging along and however much everyone tried to jinx them they were not going down and had a perfect drive. Pajero Power! @Mohamad Anwer had a rather unusual day with a crest and a pop out due to the side wall being torn. Thanks to @Ashok chaturvedi for having all the tools and @Matt.T for putting all the torque that was needed to fix them. Also wishing a speedy recovery for your wife. @Ranjan Das was a fantastic 2nd lead in his recently upgraded Jeep. It's always nice to see @Matt.T with his Jeep and how effortlessly he drives it on any terrain. @Anoop Nair wanted more than one Looper sticker it seemed - but I will get you only one as doing extra loops does not get you more. I was at the end observing @Ashok chaturvedi and @Thomas Varghese navigate churned up tracks quite impressively, leaving them done a bit more for me to cross. A big thanks to @Shaaz Sha for quite a drive. Uneventful you say @Thomas Varghese, which was anything but.
  3. Quite an adventure, with guys getting lost in the dark night in the high dunes, but towards the 2nd half of the drive everyone got the hang of it and kept close to one another and unrelenting pace with @Srikumar's crazy night shenanigans a night to remember for all. Thank you @munkybizness for your excellent 2nd lead and @Ashok chaturvedi for your duties at the back as sweep. I & @GauravSoni did notice a UFO later that night 😜. The UFO was quite bright and looked like a bright bird of prey and it faded away as it left the earth towards the alpha quadrant. Later a moon appeared in its place shrouded in clouds.
  4. While it started as a normal night drive, everyone was driving quite effortlessly, in the end it turned out to be anything but an effortless drive. The drive was ending and just one more dune to go - after which @Kailas planned another break near Richi's Bar and call it a night. @Yerem Davtyan at number 3 followed the previous two cars into a bowl but had to stop as there was a slight rerouting on other side of the bowl and then his car won't come out of it. I was driving behind him and had an intuition that he might have a refusal and waited safely on top of that bowl. After repeated attempts to come out of it - we were sure he needed a winch as there was no place to tug him. In an effort to place myself in a position to winch him out, I started to move but due to the extremely soft sand - I managed to put myself in the bowl as well. I knew I was going to slip into the bowl if I tried to move and asked him to keep his car a bit up the bowl so that even if I slip, I will still be able to come out of it. I was foolishly confident that I would loop out of it, so did not take precautions to ensure that I should not have slipped into that bowl. But it did not go as I thought it will, and I slipped into the bowl. I tried to come out and could come out 3/4th of the way but still inside. We then we placed @Pacific's car on top, tethered behind for safety and I winched me out of it. While winching I had an epiphany on the RPMs: "2000 is for driving and 1500 for recovery" At 1500 rpm I was able to maintain traction and even move from difficult positions, and when it went to 2000, I was losing everything - traction and sand under my car and digging myself in the process. With this lesson learnt in practical, I now knew how to drive, and I was able to position myself where I wanted to do at first and move from exactly the same position from where I got myself into the bowl to begin with. Then it was a quick pull for the old Tahoe, and we were out an hour late. Retrospectively, if I were to find myself in the same position now, I would avoid going into the bowl at all costs, having learnt that it was foolish even to assume that I could loop out of it. Desert is unpredictable and will not condon mistakes stemming out of over confidence.
  5. It was a short convoy, all the attendees joining just a day before the drive. 3/4th of this convoy was 1/4th of the convoy from the previous day drive at Ghantoot with @JeromeFJ I came from a night drive with @Kailas and was afraid i might not be able to drive to the fullest potential, but it turned out to be a fantastic drive and kept me fully awake and I enjoyed every second of it without any feeling of fatigue. The drive was not only refreshing but also a master class in technical dunes. However improbable, in to find virgin dunes in Nazwa, it was not impossible for @Chaitanya D. It felt like a joy ride to me, gliding from one dune to another till we reached big red. @takeshi sobue who speaks seldom was made second lead and did an excellent job in that position. He always kept a safe distance and matched the lead step for step, dune over dune acknowledging every instruction from the lead. It is a delight to hear his car's roar when he took it effortlessly up the tall dunes. He has superb control over his car - well done. @Zulfikhar Naiyar faced some hesitation on climbing the big red but towards the end he too had better grip over the techniques and for sure had some fun learning how to go about it. Thank you @Chaitanya D for a great drive on Sunday morning, It was everything I was expecting from your drive to be. Had fun 100/100.
