FAP filter?

Today my car flashed the particle filter warning light. There are a couple of days off here in the UAE so i might have to wait till monday or tuesday to have it checked, I wanted to know what this flashing is about and what the severity of the issue might be. Is it okay to drive the car around while the light is flashing ? Someone told me its realted to the FAP filter. What is that? Thanks
