Looking fwd to seeing her on Sat, just make sure everyone is strapped in an age-appropriate seat. For camels, she has to count them too, so after drive I can validate that.

Then surely it's locked and diff indicator on dashboard isn't working correctly. Disengage the diff lock with the button. Move car slowly front and reverse 5 meter, you might hear mechanical clank gentle noise once for disengaging. Once you hear that noise move car sharp left or right to check.

Is this Xterra came with rear diff lock? Check if its stuck at lock position for some reason. If its non-diff xterra, then check if X is using the same diff setup for standard and off-road version, and how to unlock it.

I totally agree with these three things to check before changing the whole diff: bushes, Oil level, and condition. Also, noise is only coming while on the turn and what type of clanking noise, is it like metal tooth skipping or constant grinding noise. If a metal tooth skipping, it means diff is locked and find a way to keep it open and lock only for recoveries. If constant grinding, then diff internals are shot and worth replacing the whole unit.
