If you can or plan to split from the beginning, it's a way better approach so that you don't influence your car buying choices based on the wrong approach. What I mean to say is that all features, gizmos, and cosmetics are practically useless for off-road. All the power, torque, body-to-weight ratio is practically useless for road driving unless you hit an autodrome track. If you decide to split from the beginning, you can actually put all your family wishlist and find a clear winner with a panoramic roof, rear screen, premium sound, navigation screen, camera, radar, adaptive cruise etc, with all the luxury you like and afford. Unfortunately, Toyota or most Japanese brands are light years behind much of advanced features and technology to keep their reliability USP alive. So the bottom line is, if you plan to split the budget from now, your long-term buying decision will make you more happy and content than compromising what you really want because of family and road comfort vs what you cant due to off-road capability. Also, one of the key advantages that why most off-roaders have two cars, is because if an off-road car is dirty (which it will be always) or damaged or need repair after the weekend drive, then you can still go to work and use your road car freely.

@Asad, @Rob S, and @munkybizness have explained and covered a lot above better than I can explain in words. Well done in expressing and explaining the real concern so well. Well done guys. I can only advise that car insurance companies here are a little flexible OR ignorant of market value. What I mean to say is that basic Range Rover starts from 300k and fully loaded can hike to 750k so insurance companies software auto-data (I think) doesn't list or display 20 trims and specs with their book value and only shows key 4-5 trims. I faced this problem when getting insurance for my Range rover which was Vogue (not regular HSE) and also Supercharged and the insurance company kept sending me the quote for either RR Vogue or RR HSE supercharged and both trim had a much lower value than my car value. When I explained this point to them, they have done some manual adjustments and gave me the insured value that I was looking for. Bottom line, when you buy the car, try to maximize the value of cover with a single insurance company that can work out cheaper, easier and single point to contact in case of any future claim. And make sure that the insurance company does give proper off-road cover and not 20 meters or 50 meters off the tarmac cover (fake off-road cover).

It's a fantastic choice @sertac and I totally agree with everything you said above on Merc quality build, reliability, and a good balance of performance with luxury. I had a brief experience of using the 2007 E350 of a friend when he was traveling as I was about to buy his car, but he changed his mind after coming back from vacation. Strong advice, stay away from car dealers and even private dealers and look for private seller who has their name on the registration card. As I tried for over a month to find a clean one but ended up with all private dealer's cars and then I changed my mind.

50K - Prado for the road. 20K - Xterra for off-road. Both will do full justice to the road comfort and off-road capability. If you aren't ready for two cars yet, go for Prado for 70K and reach till FB or FB+ with minimal underbody protection or bumper trim. If off-roading grows on you then after 6 months of offroading you yourself would want a dedicated desert toy with enough ground clearance, stiffer suspension, off-road tires, lights etc. that you wouldn't be comfortable modifying your daily driver due to lesser road comfort, road noise, high fuel consumption, and off-road looks.
