Dear Desertnauts here the last minute tips about this afternoon's Eid outing. The meeting point will be just past the entrance to the barracks of the Royal Guards, at the end of the tarmac leading left from E14 (Al Faqa Road) into what looks like a construction area. There will be no shade, so please deflate as quickly as you arrive. The drive plan we'll take us just beyond the first sets of dunes into fields of long-range dunes dotted with clay formations, moving first in a North-West direction, then around toward East, and all along E14, all the way to Faqa, through a mixed terrain of mostly long range dunes, with a couple of sabkhas and technical areas. The convoy order at the moment entails a "tutoring" scheme, with higher ranked drivers leading each a lower rank driver, so that the latter may be inspired by the former's lines and driving techniques: @george charbel will be in Second Lead @DP1011 will be at #3 @PETELCZYC PAJERO - luke at #4 @Benjamin at #5 @Tom V at #6 @Chris Wing at #7 @Marketa Dobesova at #8 @Joseph Raju at #9 @Pavel Pashkovskiy at #9, and @Looper will start in Sweep (you will trade spots with Deepak half way through the drive). Sometimes jungle, sometimes gardens, lawns or prairies, most of the sand seems to have recently been covered by greenery. So, it seems appropriate to go searching for some sand. The goal will be to navigate from Lisaili westward toward Solar Park, then loop back toward Lisaili. Once more, as with most of my drives, the goal will be to cross as much terrain as possible, aiming for famous off-roading landmarks, but mostly searching for clean tracks, less travelled sets of dunes, and cover as much ground as possible. Type of Car: Any proper 4x4 with front and back tow hooks and 8-10 inches of ground clearance. What to bring along: Loads of water, snacks (for yourself), smiles, face mask, rubber gloves, enthusiasm and willingness to learn. Approximate finish time: 11:00 AM P.S. Dear Desertnauts, even though with some work related delay and "radio silence", here's the briefing for tomorrow's drive. As you may have imagined, I borrowed the theme from Ewan Mc Gregor's series of drives around the world (literally Round, Up and Down). He's used bikes, and taken months, we'll use cars and take hours: nonetheless, the spirit is unchanged. It should be a loooong drive, facing heat as its major adversity (let's hope only that one), and will take us around from Faqa to Solar Park, via whatever we'll find in between. As I have not yet made up my mind which way to go, in order to find the sand as clean from vegetation as possible. we'll settle for the most popular Faqa's starting point, on the sabkha close to the Eye of Sauron (better known as the Solar Tower). Better late than never..... here's a short briefing for tomorrow's drive. I will wait for the drivers just past the automatic gate, off the right turn-off on E20, coming from Faqa. The drive will be among a nice set of long-range dunes, quite large and with some small trees dotting the "valleys" between each cordon. After zigzagging along this area, we'll head north, toward E14, and possibly Faqa, crossing a mix of more technical dunes, sabkhas, and a few tall red dunes. The short convoy should be able to move at a brisk pace. The convoy order will be the following: @PETELCZYC PAJERO - luke in Second Lead @James Lovell at #3 @Michael Chattle at #4 @Gautam Banka at #5 @FERNANDO SYRIO at #6, and @Rk ram in Sweep. Enter the dunes east of the track, follow them West, then North, reach Nagrah, loop around its star dunes, cross the sabkha, re-enter the dunes, aim North once again, cross more dunes, taller and taller, reach the exit.
