Internet Anywhere: Usage for Offroad & Convoys
_luke_ replied to Zed's topic in Off-Road Club's Discussions
My most data usage application is zoom and ms teams. 25-50ms latency from starlink at home would be perfect for me except I don't have a balcony to mount it on -

Best use case: work from desert when camping. I use inreach for comms when out in desert for sending and receiving messages... And that's good enough for me unless camping during weekdays. Starlink works great for me in Aus and JP. (Wife's dad uses it on his rural off-grid property in Aus going through 100's GBS a month and it never skips a beat.) -

Hi @Andrew John Melvill @Cristian @nithish468 Considering the current situation and keeping everyone’s safety as our top priority, we will be pausing all upcoming weekday and weekend drives for now. We will reassess in the coming days and resume drives once things feel stable and comfortable again. This drive will not be going ahead at this time, and I have removed you from the calendar. Thank-you, Luke P.

We rolled out from the Tilal drag race track after a quick briefing, engines warm and spirits high. By 20:10, the convoy was already threading its way westward along the dune cordons, settling into that familiar nighttime rhythm where headlights carve soft arcs across the sand. About fifteen minutes in, I found myself crested on a ridge—very unusual moment for me! yeah right! haha. The shovels came out, the team gathered, and with many hands making light work, the Ranger was freed and the convoy was moving again without missing a beat. At the one-hour mark, we reached the foxes’ dens. It was the perfect spot for a short break: ten minutes to stretch legs, wander around the burrows, and enjoy the quiet pulse of the desert night before pushing deeper into the range. From there, the terrain opened into the long, vegetation-free dunes of Fayah—wide, rolling, and beautifully clean. A few minor refusals and quick stucks punctuated the run, but nothing that slowed the group for more than a minute. Recoveries were smooth and efficient, thanks to @Sam Selim and @JC_E, who led each recovery with calm precision. A special mention goes to @Sebastian Nohse for an excellent second lead. The convoy always mirrors the second lead’s finesse, and tonight his line choices and gentle corrections kept the flow tight and confident. Roughly 3 km from the exit, we paused for a well-earned coffee stop. Espresso, Turkish coffee, tea, karak, brownies, muffins, dates—the full nighttime spread. It was a warm, communal moment under the stars before the final stretch out. Thanks to everyone who came out on a Tuesday night. Runs like this work because of the teamwork, the patience, and the shared enjoyment of the desert. Looking forward to the next one and hope to see each of you again in the sand soon. @AlexM @_Piotr_ @Sebastian Nohse @Sam Selim @Albert_Spa @JC_E

Nice work on the level up @CY Bong -
Hi, thanks for prompting this update @_Piotr_ You dont need any offroad lights for this drive.. just your normal lights will be fine.. high beam is even better. Please bring a head torch or a light so that you can inflate easily afterwards,.. there may or may not be ambient lighting, but a torch or something will help. Most importantly! Bring a chair to sit around on and chat while we make a cup of coffee before the drive home! I will make some espresso in a moka pot... but you should BYO tea or coffee if you can
