Desert Navigation - GPS Apps - Comparison and Reviews

Hi Fred @Frederic What about GPS location/ track accuracy? In your opinion which one offers greater accuracy? Remember during the last DCT we all kind of suffered somewhat due to this. Gaia was showing different tracks on each phone even though we all followed the same track. I understand it is down to your phones data / GPS and due to this reason, I was eventually planning to get a something like Garmin Overlander or Magellan TRX7 exclusively for recording/ planning. But not so sure now after reading your comments above.🙄

Good point @Anoop Nair I use two Garmin devices as well and they seem to be a slightly more accurate, but only marginal, and the main variations is the fact that your phone is inside the cabin of the vehicle. Once you exit the vehicle and give it a few seconds it will give a better accuracy. 10-15m accuracy should definitely work in most situations.

Another example is my Garmin 66sr handheld device promises around 2m accuracy but this only works while hiking (moving slowly) and being outdoor. So not zooming by at 30kmh in a Jeep ;)

ive done a lot of 'slow' navigating using the garmin fenix series of handheld devices... where visibility and speed of UI doesnt mater so much (backcountry ski touring)... and its absolutely superb once you have GPS+glonas or GPS+galileo

Enabling multiple satellite systems and disabling data seems to give extremely accurate (down to 1 or 2 meters) reception once you have clear sky view.

I've found the GPS+GLONAS with NO DATA to give the best results. Have been tracking it (fenix watch attached to grabhandle under winshield) and ipad in the car for a while now and found that gaia seems to veer off occasionally before re-joining the garmin route. ( ipad has no connectivity just relying on GPS)

i'm gonna assume this is probably due to old ipad and not recording gps position as often or with as regular an interval between readings, being as accurate as the standalone device.

of course the route plotting on the garmin leaves a lot to be desiered unless using basecamp........ but garmin doesnt overheat and turn off like the ipad does either.. but cant use the tiny screen to follow breadcrumbs while driving on my fenix, really just for route recording.

holy grail has yet to be found :-)

What you perhaps can do is buy the Garmin GLO 2:

Garmin GLO 2: Reviewed By A Professional Navigator – Casual Navigation

This bluetooth GPS receiver can pair with your ipad, so you end up having more accurate GPS reception.

Device overheating is indeed a bit of an issue. I usually try to mount my devices in front of an AC vent to keep them cool, or sometimes hang a piece of cloth inbetween the device and the windshield to keep it in the shade.

UPDATE:

Recently launched by the former GAIAGPS founders, an app called GOATMAPS. I've been doing beta testing and received a free 1yr subscription.

Some first comments:

+ very easy to use.

+ fast, smooth user interface.

+ Many similarities with Gaiagps.

+ Offline map download option.

+ Great support within 24hrs.

- limited number of maps.

- no high-resolution imagery download option.  Only low resolution for now due to high cost of maps licensing.

- very tailored to hiking.

heres hoping they have switched from folders to moved to tags so that waypoints or routes can be 'included' in multiple places without creating duplicates >.<

They have only iPhone app

Been looking at this app that is Android based and tailored to motorcycle navigation (on-road or offroad).

DMD Navigation is the name of the company, selling devices (tabs, phones) that are Android based, but their standalone app seems to work on any Android device.

DMD Navigation - Ultimate Adventure Navigation App and Devices

Getting Started - DMD Navigation

Will give this one a try soon and post a review.

OBD integration with TPMS feature looks promising !
