Just wanted to know what are the plastic pieces surrounding the battery for?

The plastic pieces around the battery helps in keeping the battery cool. It also helps in diverting the fresh air across the battery. The plastic pieces actually helps in extending the battery life specially in summers. So if you are thinking to remove those plastic pieces, then get ready for a big maintenance cost for your battery.

And ya, don't remove it. Otherwise the engine will tend to become hot. You won't realize it at the initial state, but gradually the battery will heat up and will stop responding. So in order to avoid the maintenance of the battery, let that plastic pieces do their job.
