Y cant i get the timing cover off in my 2002 LR Discovery?

Why cant i get the timing cover off .Do i have to even remove the oil pan in my 2002 Land Rover Discovery?

Remove both the cylinder head gasket, and the sump gasket in order to change the chain.

Remove the crankshaft pulley. I advise that you get this job done with a friend
