Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable using a socket wrench. Unplug the electrical connection on the back of the alternator by hand. Take note or draw a diagram of the serpentine belt route to make sure that it's reinstalled and routed correctly.

Remove the shroud (fan safety cover) for better access to the alternator. The shroud is located on the front-left of this transverse engine when facing the car.

Locate the pulley tensioner used to loosen the belt for removal. Loosen the pulley tensioner using a serpentine belt removal tool or a socket wrench. Turn and hold the center tensioner bolt clockwise to release tension and then slip off the belt. The tensioner will return to its regular tension once released.

Remove the mounting bolts located on either side of the alternator using a socket wrench. Lift the unit out from the mounting brackets.

Alternator Installation

Compare the new alternator carefully with the old unit to be sure the mounting holes align and that you have the correct part. Place the new alternator in the mounting brackets and secure the alternator using its mounting bolts.

Reinstall the serpentine belt by turning and holding the center tensioner bolt clockwise. Slip the belt back onto the pulley and release the tensioner. The tensioner will return to its normal tension position. Confirm that the belt has been reinstalled correctly according to its original route and not twisted.

Reattach the electrical plug to the alternator and reconnect the battery cable. Start the vehicle and allow it to run for several minutes, allowing the replacement alternator to charge. Turn off the engine and replace the shroud.

Test drive the vehicle while monitoring the voltage meter on the instrument panel. The battery level gauge will fluctuate while the alternator is charging, but will soon stabilize to the actual battery voltage level.
