Why is my 1996 mazda taking a long time to accelerate

i am the owner of a 1996 Mazda 626 and the problem is that my car is accelerating very slowly and is taking a lot of time to reaching its peak which when it reaches, runs well.

why is this happening???

Is the check engine light ?

Get your fuel pressure check to make sure the fuel pump when call upon it provides the demand during acceleration and wide open throttle. Also check for restriction in the exhaust and have the throttle position sensor tested.
