  4. There is no way to really end this debate with a yes or no answer. People have their own experiences and driving styles. Some people can drive manual, some can drive auto. Some people can't drive either without hitting the only tree in the desert. My conclusion, drive what works for you. Kali wali what anyone else says. It's you driving, not them.

  6. Another old school trick is before you loosen a fastener, tighten it a quarter turn first. Most of the time it's easier to tighten than loosen and tightening a little bit will break the bond on the threads before you loosen off.
  7. This is something most people who work on their cars will come across. We all know how easy it is to round off a bolt head or snap the fastener off inside the hole requiring the hole EZ Out process then breaking the EZ Out in the hole and not being able to drill it because it’s so hard. Not everyone has access to oxy propane/acetylene and we all know the blow torches from ACE hardware are only good for lighting barbecues. So share your hints and tips for extracting stuck fasteners! I hear a lot of people preaching WD40 is good for this but in my experience it’s not. It’s good to spray on a bolt thread. If you can get a nut moving it will slide off a lot easier. But it doesn’t help to break the original friction. It is a lubricant, not a penetrating oil. I came across a product in my youth days of working on BMXs called Plus Gas. Amazing stuff, but you have to leave it for a few hours and let it penetrate into the threads. Some people have no patience, they just want to spray and screw but this doesn’t work with penetrating oil. It needs time to work. Seemingly not available in uae though. Maybe 6-7 years ago I read an article online. It recommended a 50/50 mix of acetone and ATF. The acetone draws into the thread by capillary action, evaporates and leaves the oil on the threads, thus lubricating unseen spaces. This has become my go to method for freeing up fasteners when oxy gas isn’t available. I have modified it a bit as acetone is expensive so I mix paint thinners and ATF and it works just as well. You just need to give it time to work. Don’t spray and screw. I used to keep a spray bottle handy but the thinners were eating the seals in the spray bottle so now I keep some in a coke bottle and pour as required. Ive heard a lot of good things about “ice freeze sprays” but the way things are in uae, people don’t even know about simple things like uv leak detector so I’d be interested in hearing from anyone who has tried it. I guess they shrink the fastener and make it easier to remove, much like oxy gas expands the nut and makes more space for the nut threads.
  8. It’s hit and miss bringing back old stuff. Look at what Toyota did with the the GT86. They wanted to invoke the feelings of the AE86 but instead produced something bland and uninteresting that chicks can drive to the office and say they drive a “sports car”. As a Subaru BRZ it makes more sense but it doesn’t suit Toyota.

  11. 100 dhs to anyone on carnity who can find an engine I built that was bad, rattles, grenaded itself, whatever. I work to the book, I don’t bodge things, scam people, make misdiagnoses, charge for work that didn’t need to be done unlike many mechanics in uae, no names dropped. I’d also like to throw this out there, Black engine oil doesn’t necessarily mean it’s cleaning the engine. A well maintained engine shouldn’t be so full of contaminants that it turns the oil black over 1,000 km or less. More often than not, it’s cheap, crappy low grade oil which turns black because it can’t handle the heat and burns and breaks down, thus not protecting the engine. There’s a little thing in chemistry called oxidisation, maybe worth reading up on. Then there’s also the issues of whatever additives are in the oil which will also break down and turn dark over time. If the oil is black instead of dark brown come service time, there’s a good chance the wrong oil was put in, ie not to manufacturer specs. Failing that, maybe it’s time to take a look at your rings and bores.
  12. When the tyre pops off the rim, it's going to spin around a bit. Even a few degrees from what it was, it's going to be out of balance anyway, sand or no sand inside because the weights on the rim don't correspond to the original position on the tyre any more. I have never put loose sand inside a tyre so I don't know, I used sand bags. But I think the above explanation works.
  13. Depends on the ECU. Some store everything, some lose it when you do a quick disconnect and reconnect.
  14. There is a trick you can try, not that I advocate it. Turn the TPS on the throttle body around a few degrees and it can alter the shift timings. It will cause a fault code to come up when you scan the ECU but it won't do any harm. But be aware, putting it back to its original place can be a pain in the ass if you don't mark it before you move it.
  15. For small car tyres, its easiest just to use hammer on or stick on weights. I can't comment too much on the beads. I've never used them personally but I have seen people using them and they seem to work fine. When I was driving articulated trucks, we used small sandbags inside the tyre to balance them and it worked perfectly. A truck tyre is so big and will be naturally unbalanced and the amount of weights you would have to stick on the rim would make it dangerous if they decided to fly off. Ive also used the bubble type balancers in a shop I worked in before. They are ok if it's all you have, but it has to be set up on proper level ground and the wheel has to be properly centered. It's easy to make a mistake with them if you don't know what you're doing and set a wheel badly off balance. I much prefer the electronic machines, especially the modern ones that will check for runout and flat spots. Less margin for error but then again, it's all down to the operator.

  19. Some good points made @desertdude Maybe I have an aversion to automatics because the majority of my experience is with manuals. I grew up with it. I feel what the car is doing. It is second nature to me. But I can see the point where autos make sense for some people around the city. For me, it really doesn't bother me. I'm so used to manuals that shifting gears and clutching is second nature to me. I've driven 40 foot articulated trucks through Belfast and Dublin. I picked up a customers car a while back, auto SLK and had to take it across Dubai to a workshop and honestly, it scared the crap out of me. 2 pedals, go and stop. I just didn't feel in control. I don't like driving along and pressing the throttle then the engine revs up itself. Then when you're accelerating, you don't know if it's going to change gear or keep revving until it blows up. I'm sorry, but autos just aren't for me. I've only owned one but I've driven plenty in my time but I prefer manual and that's just the way it is. I haven't got a lot of desert experience. I've only driven a few times but the times I have, it has been in a manual. I was able to apply my experience from home in the snow, rocking the clutch and getting myself out of holes. I also have clutchless shifts down to a tee. If I'm going up a hill and the engine is dying, I can rev match and drop a gear in one action or if I'm cruising, I can go up the gears without the clutch.

  24. You can macguyver your pants belt and use it. I prefer the 3 legged style. I find it a lot less hassle.
