Aftermarket Air Filters vs OEM Air Filters... Myths and Facts
Zed replied to Frederic's topic in Off-Road Club's Discussions
Now for my opinion why these non-OEM filters exist (but not necessarily why you should use them): 1. SOUND. Most manufacturers (Toyota, Nissan) want to make Silent Cars, so they add Resonator (absorb sound) and Paper Filters (maximum filtration). People being people (what’s the fun if my car is the same as yours 😁) want that Revving Sound. These performance filters, as @Srikumar has mentioned have larger pores, or let more air pass through. Additionally when installing, the OEM Resonator is usually removed, so no more air restriction. It’s like vacuuming your room with a 1000w vacuum, all that air (and dirt!) gets sucked in, which leads to the next point… 2. Little (again, little) performance 😁. More air coming through fast, more call for computer to pump fuel and cause faster combustion for the power needed to push car. BUT this makes sense in Yas Marina circuits (or Dubai Autodrome), because in drag race, you only cover a short distance so any small performance tweaks count. But for regular sand offroading, over long term yes those sand particles that didn’t get filtered out may cause you to do engine rebuilds after some time. In short: a. if you have recently bought new car, don’t do it, keep it at stock paper-based air filter. You will also break warranty if you modify this. b. if you have older cars that you want to experiment with, again don’t do it unless you like that revving sound. I put mine in the old LandCruiser cos I want to hear more of its V8…. And also planning an engine rebuild end of year, so yeah expecting to clean sand particles from my engine later 😂 -
Aftermarket Air Filters vs OEM Air Filters... Myths and Facts

Adding to the already scientifically-sound paper and good advice from both Sri and Fred is this video to prove the excellent Sand Filtration point of Paper-based filter (OEM): -
Nissan Patrol Y61 Tire Upgrades Help & Recommendations
Zed replied to munkybizness's topic in Nissan Patrol Forum in UAE
There are already very good advices here and I think @munkybiznesshas made his choice, but I want to give an opinion on this “height” vs “width” since you were banging your head over this weeks ago 😁: 1. Generally like guru Sri has mentioned, higher is better. For the simple reason: your rear diff (aka the pumpkin) can only be moved up (higher ground clearance) by taller tires (thicker sidewalls). 2. But if you have a lift, whether suspension (move frame up) or body (move body up from frame), you just made the Center of Gravity even higher than factory design. In this case you may want to consider the wider tires, for the simple reason: a tall car with skinny/narrow feet (tyres) vs a tall car with fat feet/wide tires, which one is easier to roll over during side-sloping? I know which one cos I have rolled over 😂. Additional aesthetic reason: once you lift your car, you create that extra space that can only be fulfilled by larger tires, since some will see that space as “unbalanced”, “not in harmony” or “ugly” 😅 In short: tires are not forever, after few years they’ll wear out so good time to experiment a bit. If it doesn’t work out, you can always sell the tires after experimenting and fall back to the previous proven ones ☺️ -
Aftermarket Air Filters vs OEM Air Filters... Myths and Facts
Zed replied to Frederic's topic in Off-Road Club's Discussions
OMG, you DID NOT use Elsevier to compare air filters, did you @Frederic 😂 Now who can beat a peer-reviewed paper except another PhD 😅 Btw how do you still have access to the subscription, the only reason I still have mine is probably they forgot to delete my academic account 😁 -
This is a nice new feature @Frederic, now I know what everyone’s up to without the chattiness of a WhatsApp/Telegram group 😅 And I’m intrigued with this Creative Drive, guess I’ll have to join @Islam Soliman’s drives more often 😁

Kailas has been promoted to Marshal level
Zed replied to Gaurav's topic in Off-Road Club's Announcements
Congrats @Kailas 👍🏻 -
@PaoloMaraziti @Gaurav i have confirmation from someone passing yesterday that the border structure is there (cars still slowing down to not crash into posts) but nobody is manning them nor checking for any Al Hosn. The Vaccinated Remark is for entering malls and government buildings... some restaurants also ask for Al Hosn as proof of vaccines but some don't check...

ol' Land Cruiser will be in the garage for some time, when we opened the Transfer Case for inspection, the Center Diff Shaft & gears need replacing, and the latest one is failure on the rotors of the transfer case oil pump 😭 * see photos: 1. Center Diff Shaft & Gear issues 2. Transfer Case Pump issue causing oil not to be circulating to the gears 😭

Now I know why there are similar cars available here but people opt to import from USA 😂

Thanks @Frederic for arranging, the Astronomer encounter confirmed that we're at the right spot... it was cloudy from sunrise to 9am in DIFC area so maybe the clouds from last night are in the city now 😅 Looking forward to winter Lens Club events, i hate conversations being cut so next time definitely do a Combo with Camping so we can talk all night while watching the sky ☺️

Welcome back bro @Wade Pat2, my 2002 comes with the "stronger" 4-pinion front diff and last week it broke down 😂 But I guess it was just wear & tear... anyways the more reason to put in new 4.88 NitroGears (expecting end of Aug to arrive) ☺️

Hey bro @Niki all is not lost, i've heard people apply for movement permit for Thursday night/Friday midnight 12-5am and was approved. Try these if you still have the spirit: 1. Download Abu Dhabi Police app, click Favorite Service > Add, search for Movement Permit. Then fill in the details, important is correct phone + correct license plate. Sample screenshot below. 2. Go to Al Quaa Milky Way Spot here https://goo.gl/maps/QFTzWKW1h7QK3gpx6, it's gonna be 1.5hrs drive so plan ahead. Go a bit deeper further where the sedans won't park next to your car, but don't go deep into the desert, I can tell you Al Quaa is full of technical & bowls 😂 3. Decide afterwards whether you want to camp until 5am, or you want to use your permit and go home ☺️ AD Police app: Al Quaa Stars taken from Normal iPhone: (tells you the very small amount of light pollution there)

Thanks for organizing this with detailed itinerary Director @Frederic 👍, I confirmed attendance since I already booked hotel for overnight in Dubai. Eventhough I broke my LandCruiser's Front Differential, this doesn't stop me from attending the meteor shower (taking the backup Y62 for a ride besides mall parkings 😄) . Sadly I will miss your Newbie Night Drive though, since I'm so used to the LC100 I don't feel confident anymore driving the Stock Y62 to any desert... it seems the stars are not aligned for this night drive 🙈
-
Awesome bro @Naveen Raj this is why you gotta keep the weekly momentum to attend the drives 👍🏻 You will soon reach FewbiePlus I'm sure... although we still need to see how you handle bowls later 😁 how's the bumper @Josh T.? Hope you were able to sort it out for future drives... unless you're shopping for second-hand 4x4s now? 😊

thanks @Frederic & @Anoop Nair, i'm in fact inspired by Fred's technical-but-for-laymen articles. I'm already thinking my next article: 4LO Explained 😂
