Sam Don
Hello Fellas! I have been going in rounds trying to find out the best fitted tyres & wheels for offroading A lot of information are available for different Terrains especially for U.S.A but very less for UAE (desserts & wadis). Are AT tyres ( 35s or 37s) on 20 wheels a good option ? What is the ideal width to consider for desert drives ? Which company offers the best desert tyres ? (Nitto seems never made a landfall in UAE).
Aadi
Usually the most common type you’ll see on modified trucks are 315, 35” and 37” however they are usually paired with 17” rims or 18” which is more rare than 17, this is because you can fit a larger sidewall tire with smaller rims. As for tire types and brands, I have a purely offroad focused car, so I have experience with Cooper AT3 XLT, and BFG KO2. These have worked great for me with a slight reduction in drive comfort which isnt a concern of mine anyway. I can vouch for these two, however other members of the club will be able to give more options based on their knowledge. If you want to look rims, I would suggest Method as they have beadgrip technology, I usually run 11 psi, (and have went down to 5 when stuck) and never had a popout even on intense drives, but again, there are many different brands to choose from. (You should also look into the details such as what kind of offset you want to have.) But if you do decide to go for big tires make sure they wont rub against your fenders/fender liners, remember bigger tires add more weight, and will put a bit more stress on your truck. There are many factors which will determine the ideal tire and rim types/size for you such as whether you daily drive your truck and what your specific needs are. I have just suggested a few things based on my own experience. Tires and rims are quite a vast topic and you have alot of options to choose from . Very helpful with the lift I am planning to do I can only go for 20in wheels and my options are only 35s or 37s, 35 looked too small but your point on tire weight rings a bell. I am going to drive mine every day on Road and Off road every now and then. Road noise, tire life, less burden on knuckles and ride comfort are few points I am looking at in order. Method wheels with bead lock - your experience adds more value to this
Aadi
Id say 35” are plenty, yea they do look a little small especially on my truck, but they do the job quite well. In the end its upto you. I stopped myself from going with 37” because I never really needed them and it will end up with less stress on the components. (I wouldve probably regeared the truck if I went with 37” so an added expense) The tires I have recommended are quite aggressive so you will have increased road noise and less comfort. You might want a less agressive tire if you drive daily. Beadgrip and beadlocks are different, I went with beadgrip, but with beadlock you can run generally lower psi and have less worry about popouts.
Luke K P
@Sam Don pro tip if buying methods: Lots of garages sell methods,.. and lots of garages are selling method replicas from china passed off as genuine..... last thing you want is a rim self destructing and breaking apart (speaking from experience). Google for the UAE /dubai official distributor and only buy from them, they also have the largest range of sizes, offsets, colours etc. you will be saving yourself lots of expense in the long run!
