This is turning out to be a very good topic, with nice spin-offs:

Themed drive on the car-debate with @Mike M. (count me in!) and @ChrisW hinting at the star-dunes drive, really hope that one comes up again, would love to see that..!

One question for you, any specific reason why are you are lost between the two, personally from a performance point of view, i do not see a basis for comparison as they are 2 completely different vehicles with different points of strength. i think it all comes down to what do you do more: driving on dunes or rock crawling. I could be over simplifying it and ill wait for others to comment but i think that is what it comes down to. 

Hey mike thank you for the simplified input. I will do mostly dunes. 

Reason for me to choose now is that i have the flexibility to decide what could be more fun to drive. I never owned a truck. 

I hear it is a tricky thing to drive, to which i would say, well that would just improve my skill wouldn't it. (A calm sea never produced skillful sailor)

On the other hand, its more spacious more comfortable as if you're taking your couch on the dunes and on road as well. 

It's a hassle to park everywhere i go.

I love the fire you are throwing and to your point i think the FJ is a very very solid third position. The new King is still sitting on the throne until a new vehicle comes out. I am getting my popcorn now

@Noufal and @_Herman_ your points gave me an idea. I will do a THEMED drive to debate the Offroading King over breakfast. I just need a couple of weeks as i am tied down for 2 weeks. Keep an eye out for this drive. We will finish the debate there

We could organise a fair competition or an obstacle themed drive to prove it.

Look, I have no idea how the Ranger Raptor drives, but honestly, who cares about turbo lag and "sensible tech" when you can buy a literal tectonic event on wheels? One has a V6 that sounds like a very fast vacuum cleaner, and the other has a 6.4L HEMI that announces your arrival three zip codes away. Life is too short for independent front suspension and doors you can’t take off—just go with the Rubicon 392! 😆

I was in the same point (ca. 6 months ago) selecting between Jeep Wrangler 3.6 Rubicon and Ranger Raptor.
(The both cars are in the same price range, therefore V8 Raptor R and Jeep 392 were not considered). 
I love both cars and probably will be very happy with either of them. 

Personally, I have selected Ranger Raptor due to 

• Quite drive due to well insulated cabin at 140/160 km/h with Adaptive Cruise Control + Lane Centering 
• Compared to Jeep 3.6 Pentastar engine Ranger Raptor has more power (~40%) and torque (+65%)
  Ranger Raptor has smart anti-lag system in Baja mode therefore there is no visible turbo lag in the Dunes.
• I love motorbikes and I wanted to have possibility to put dirt bike / quad for kids in the back. 
• Adaptable FOX suspension adjustable from the steering wheel button is doing great job. In Sport keep vehicle stable on the road. 
• Exhaust flaps/sound adjustable from the steering wheel button. 

I miss in my Ranger Raptor

• Sunroof /removable roof panels 

In the end you need to try/drive both cars and see which one you like more.
