fule tank capacity

am an owner of a 2005 CR-V LX. I know that the fuel tank has a 15.3 gal capacity. However, after several fill-ups, and careful monitoring, my experience doesn't seem to make sense. I've been filling up when the fuel indicator reads empty. and each time, I can only put approx. 11.3 gallons of fuel into the tank. In fact, the empty gas tank light goes on slightly before the needle hits the "E" mark.

as i have had cars before this one so i am experienced enough in this matter but this is above my head

Every car has 3 - 4 - 5 gallons reserve.

So as your CRV.
