  1. Due to limited participation this drive has been called off. There is space on some of the other Newbie Drives, and I would request @Russ @Melenany @Daniel Rodas to join any one of the following drives.
  2. Having tried some options the best in my opinion is 1. 480W 32 inch spot light LED bar (or the biggest most powerful LED bar that you can install) in the front as a minimum 2. Spread LED lights on the sides of the car Also, would like to mention that LED Light bar is not mandatory for night driving. It helps ofcourse but not mandatory
  3. The only thing that you would get hampered is long hill climbs which in Carnity drives is about 10% of the entire drive duration. Play with the tiptronics and you will find a sweet spot and be able to manage most of the things. Just for information, Vanessa and Richard also drive Pajeros which have the upshifting problem, but they have mastered the gear shifts beautifully and gets every bit of juice out of their cars. Just needs some practice and an understanding of what is your car's limit. So sit back and enjoy the Carnity drives.
  4. If you are driving a 2015 Pajero in tiptronic it will hold the first gear. The upshifting problem is there in 2008-2011 models
  5. Check out an Xterra. Can be a good DD as well as an excellent off-road vehicle in stock condition. Another alternative is a SWB Pajero 3.8. You need to just stay away from 2008-2011 models as they are known for upshifting.
  6. Montero Sport while decently good will again tend to struggle. Mind you if someone has already bought these cars then it's perfectly fine to use them in the desert. But you are in a different situation where you are looking to buy a dedicated weekend warrior and in such cases it will be good to get a car that is better built for off-roading.
  7. The thickness of the cable is most important. Buy a cable with a low gauge number like 1 or 2. Ensure that the alligator clips are built strong and ofcourse a longer cable is preferred as it gives you more flexibility while using. And the insulation along the cable should be quite thick. Something like this : https://www.amazon.ae/Iron-Forge-Tools-Jumper-Cables/dp/B01BX1GRJM/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=jumper+cable+gauge+2&qid=1617299334&sr=8-2
  8. I have had a Crony portable jump starter. Used it more than a few times when my battery used to die. Not the most reliable but I always keep a fully charged unit just in case. After about using 15-20 times, it holds charge just enough for one jump start.
  9. Yes, it's a good idea to go-to the oil grade specified by the manufacturer and also try to stick to a good brand of oil. Regarding the tyre size, unless it's a major rubbing issue I would suggest to stick to this tyre size. Your current tyre (in pic Tyre 2) will have a better footprint (under deflated condition) than the stock tyres (in pic Tyre 1). The only compromise might be the additional weight of the tyre, but that also depends on the brand of the tyre. BFG and Cooper would be heavy. Geolandars AT would be lighter.
  10. In your model of Pajero there might not be any issue of AT overheating. This is a more common problem in newer model Pajeros. Having said that, ensure that you don't outrun the life of the fluids and keep checking them. If you are running water jn your radiator it might be a better option to shift to coolant. Regarding additional lights, I second what Chaitanya says. But if your lights are dull and faded it would be worthwhile to get some high wattage LED lights. Options depend on your budget, but I would recommend Toby's high wattage spot LED light. You would turn night into day 🙂
  11. Not needed to be honest, but no harm in carrying it if you have the space in your car. Another option is if you really need additional height (which I really doubt) is to use the spare wheel followed by the jack board and the jack.
  12. The best jacking point for any vehicle is by lifting the lower control arm. If you recollect when we had the popout on the Shuwaib Drive, we used a JZX jack and lifted your car from the lower control arm. The space from the ground to the lower control arm only increases with bigger tyre size. So if you go from a stock 31 inch tyre to 33 inch tyre, this space actually increases by half the difference in diameter change, which in this case is 0.5 x 2 inch = 1 inch. Also the lower control arm is positioned below the centre line of the tyre. Hope this answers your query.
  13. After you drive a 2D in the desert, you would not like a 4D, ever.
  14. @Lakshmi Narasimhan if you are looking to install bigger profile tyres, I would suggest to change the rims to 17 inch and go for 265/65/R17. This will not cause rubbing issues and give a better footprint on the sand. Else you can go the spacer route as Fred suggested, but before doing check if it affects the warranty.
  15. Vehicle - Able to do continuous long hill climb without any gearing or power-to-weight issues. Safety - Able to drive without fishtailing, ride the ridge and crisscrossing safely.
  16. @GauravSoni and @Rizwanm2 the broad criterias which the Marshal and Crew use for the selection of drivers are as follows : Broad selection criteria: Performance - Able to manage Intermediate drives regularly and without any repetitive stuck or refusals. Experience - Able to keep constant focus at high pace driving with caution and yet courageous. Vehicle - Able to do continuous long hill climb without any gearing or power-to-weight issues. Safety - Able to drive without fishtailing, ride the ridge and crisscrossing safely. Skills - Able to manage high speed maneuvers without slowing down the convoy.
