As i mentioned earlier this week, this is not a dunebashing drive🙅‍♀️, but a scenic drive where we will be mostly using existing farm tracks and cover quite some distance. 🐪🐪🐪We will be taking occasional breaks and i encourage everyone to bring a camera along to take some nice photos for our gallery.📷 As a small bonus i have split up the convoy in two teams. The plan is to have a small tug of war contest between the green team (convoy pos 1-10) and the blue team (pos 11-20). So train your muscles and have a good breakfast prior to the drive 💪 We will be using Carnity Channel 2: 446.031Mhz. For the ones joining us for the first time that do not have a radio yet, i can lend you one for this drive.📻 Bring your offroad gears such as a pressure gauge, deflator, offroad flag, and a good shovel.🐪 Upon arrival please park your car on one side only of the farm track so the farmers can still pass by. If you are on a budget, it’s best to stick to the original rims. The reason is because we have seen cheap aftermarket rims failing as the casting quality is poor. The Mitsubishi rims can take a serious beating. There is no performance improvement in the sand or mountains in original vs after market rims. It’s a bold statement but also a fact. The size you’re suggesting is fine. Less than 17’ simply doesn’t fit on the 3.8 models due to the bigger caliper in the front. The original rims are 7Inch width from what I remember, which is better in the mountains as this will mean the rim itself will be better tucked in. Going for a 8.5 inch width rim will mean your tyres are stretched over them rim and will leave the rim very exposed to rocks and damage.

Take a good hammer and give the steel bar some good knocks across the length. If the rust has done its work it will just fall into pieces but I doubt it. Its probably just surface rust

IF, and only IF the steel bar and tow points are in good condition and the rust we see is only light surface rust, you can perhaps apply a good coating on the steel bar and keep it. Then on the plate in the middle where you have the 4 holes you can perhaps bolt a hitch receiver as it looks that this was something the previous owner had done.

I havent seen the X-AT's on a lot of cars here yet. For us dune-drivers we anyways prefer the lighter Geolander G015 model.

the semi-circle cover is fine, we drove for 4-5 years with our Pajero and the spare tyre never seemed to degrade much from that. It was parked in the carport during the day. So if the Pajero would not be in a covered parking it's perhaps worth looking into covering it completely.

Great ! 90% of our drives are in the sand, but we do the occasional wadi run and head out into the mountains if the weather is pleasant enough. I would def not go beyond 2 or 2.5inch. First there is no need, and secondly the center gravity would be affected too much. In sand we are very mindful of this to keep the original center of gravity, so that means whenever we lift, we will make sure we widen our footprint as well, either with spacers, or rims with different offset.

The Pajero 3.8 is a fantastic off-road vehicle for many purposes and for driving in the mountains it can indeed benefit from the following: - Bashplate and perhaps some added skid plates underneath to protect vital components. - Good All-terrain tyres. Would not recommend to change the size of the tyres itself, as it's the 3.8 you have 18inch rims so you are limited already, unless you plan to change the rims then a 17inch rim with 265/70/17 would be nice. -2 inch lift kit will give you a bit of extra clearance, which could be helpful in navigating boulders. If you head out in the mountains in summer, the additional SPAL cooling fan for the transmission is definitely recommended, and during low creeping speed you will start to face overheating soon. In those scenarios it's better to be at home anyways The Pajero has indeed a great traction control system for the mountains, so no need for a kill switch. Deflate to around 25psi when you head into the mountains, it will increase traction significantly and dampen the bumps a bit as well. In the winter we have the occasional wadi / scenic drive with the club, so would be great if you could join us. Take care !
