gear box cleaning instructions

there is a mountain of loose sand in my gear box i have gone to the car cleaners and tried to vaccume it out but it had a very minimum effect.

can i remove the cluster and clean it

if so how and if not then what other alternate do i have

get it clean as poss, wire brush it well, degrease and clean with thinners

If you leave any dirt the paint with not adhere.
