2009 BMW X6 Review

Recommended Posts

The Middle East waited with baited breath for the arrival of the X6, and now its here it certainly seems to one of the cars of the moment, with sales clearly doing well, judging by the ever-growing numbers to be seen here.

And don’t they look great? Especially in ‘Dubai White’. It’s fair to say that BMW did a bit of mold-breaking when they penned the X6, taking the combination of a car-bodied coupe and somehow mixing it up with a large SUV – a combination that some would rightly have thought would end up looking like a huge dog’s dinner – but remember; this is BMW.

For a region that bought so many X5s, the X6 is the perfect gift, taking the X5’s presence and road-command, but making it a whole lot better on the tarmac, whilst making no bones that this isn’t really and off-roader, although it will take a bit more of a bump and bounce than a normal road car.

2009 BMW X6But, the X6 is all about being big and foreboding like an SUV, and at the same time delivering the sort of driving dynamics that a fairly top-notch sports car would be proud of. A huge design and engineering job, and one that not many other manufacturers aside from BM would’ve dared to take on. Only BMW thought of it first; now watch the other makers follow suit.

The X6 commands some serious space on the road, but even with its significant hulk it is still only a four-seater; again it’s more about making a big and bold styling statement, rather than building a car that is large on the outside, just to be spacious on the inside.

But, those four passengers that are lucky enough to be riding inside the X6 will be very well looked after; this is a luxury crossover SUV, after all. Customarily BMW interiors are quite minimalist, but what they lack in pure opulence, they make up for in attention to detail and top-level fit and finish. This model is all new for 2009, so expect the very latest that BMW has to offer in order to wow the crowds.

2009 BMW X6Along with the latest, most inviting interiors, state-of-the-art chassis and suspension set-ups and a new era in automotive design, BMW have also really gone to town on the X6 power-plants, and interestingly it’s back to the days of turbocharging. And that’s all good for fans of super-smooth torque and effortless grace.

There are two rather top-end X6 models to choose from, and don’t be surprised when there is no lowly 2.5-litre engine on offer – the X6 is exclusive. The XDrive35i is powered by a 3-litre, straight-six, twin-turbo, petrol engine making 306bhp and 400Nm of torque, while the towering, range-topper gets the real deal 4.4-litre, V8, petrol engine, also with two turbos and pumping out a whooping 407bhp and 600Nm of torque – some serious power for this seriously slick new road machine from BMW.

2009 BMW X6And mixed in with an all new all-wheel-drive system and very clever, very accurate new stability control system, you get an entirely new and entirely enticing Sports Utility Coupe from BMW
