The Yaris is a compact hatchback and sedan, popular with young buyers and those looking for simple transport on a budget.

It’s very popular with rental companies in the region, thanks to its price and reliability.

There’s plenty of choice for the Yaris customer, with two engines in both sedan and hatch forms and three trim levels available for each. However, the car is somewhat utilitarian in its approach, with no sporting or high-powered version. Hot hatch fans, and even lukewarm hatch fans, should look elsewhere.

Despite its size, the Yaris will happily swallow four adult passengers or five at a push, while the sedan has more boot space than the hatchback.

The entry-level engine is a four-cylinder 1.3-litre unit that develops 84bhp, while the more potent power plant is a 1.5-litre motor putting out 107bhp. Both engine are available in both hatch and sedan models.

Three trim levels are available. The basic model is very basic, with a radio cassette player, air conditioning, ABS and not much else. No central locking or anything so complicated.

The mid-range model adds in features such as electric windows, keyless entry by way of a remote fob, and a CD player, while the top-spec Yaris comes with features such as a leather-covered steering wheel, iPod connectivity, front fog lamps and rear parking sensors, depending on the engine and body shape.

The 1.5-litre hatchback is also available in Yaris R form, which adds features like a carbon fibre-effect dashboard and panels, colour-coded wheels and red and black leather seats.
