Why is my 2000 Beetle jerking and shaking?

My 2000 Beetle is having a few issues

when i am driving all of a sudden it jerks and stops suddenly and when i break the car shakes.

how will i know what is going wrong?

Have the fluid in the transmission checked as this might be causing the jerking in the car. It also might need a transmission filter change and fluid.
