  1. Yes, there were coins instead of a 4WD selector shift, I don't think coins will help in the middle of the desert. BTW @sertac Dubizzle does have short link at bottom as well. https://tnydu.biz/DOybZj

  2. I've used them in the past while off-roading in rocks. They are useful as long as you have the right surface and your car has the correct Jack points. But they are super dangerous we had to make sure nobody came close the car since they could easily be tipped on the side and the use of Jack stands is a must. I agree with you. There's times where I had to dig because the floor jack won't even fit when recovering vehicles with a pop out, I can only imagine having a bottle Jack would make things even worse. Specially for low clearance vehicles like xterras, pajeros, Pathfinders etc. Pretty much anything that is not a Jeep. I can remember one year ago a Pathfinder had a popout in a very difficult angle in the middle of a ditch, I took us more than an hour to fix the pop out and recover the vehicle out of the ditch I'm sure @Emmanuel remembers this.

  3. This is well fabricated and a good idea. Just be aware of the fact that in the desert most likely you’ll need to be able to insert the jack from weird angles and have very limited space. That will create issues for a bottle jack I am afraid. Secondly, once you reach higher levels on the off-road ranking, you will be fixing pop-outs on other vehicles too, so your tailormade solution won’t work anymore.

  5. I would recommend the JZX 2 ton Jack as it has a wider base which would give better stability. Plus you can get it with the swivel neck. DM is just like any other shopping mall and I have been there recently and it's hardly crowded. If you still have apprehensions you could call the store and ask him to deliver it to you outside DM. I am sure they would do it.

  13. Great tips as usual on this thread from all the experienced people. Kudos. Well we all know the fun part being in the drives for some time, but you all have done more for sure and you know very well what it takes to get out from a difficult situation. That's what matters and probably it gets more serious and comes with more responsibility that you progress in the experience. I am telling this after seeing few difficult situations where we all as a convoy group came out on road well in time . Great learning 👍

  16. Thanks @Gaurav, for the constant leadership, and thanks to the whole Carmity team, particularly the Marshals @Rahimdad for introducing me to the Club and inspiring me to pursue desert offroading, @Srikumar for my baptism as an absolute newbie (that first experience is what makes you come back), @Frederic for his constant and invaluable technical advice, and @Emmanuelfor testing me severely with my first unforgettable Fewbie drive (since that drive my girlfriend has preferred to stay home 😅). I also wish to thank some of the guys (and girl) with whom I have been sharing a similar off-roading growing path: @Xaf, @Shamil, @Wrangeld, @Jeepie, @Javier M and @Brette driving with you has both helped and challenged me to learn from each of your individual set of skills, allowing me to adapt and improve my own style. I cannot mention the whole community here, but surely I am grateful to all those with whom I have been driving: every time we go out, at any level of off-roading, it's a very valuable learning experience. I have grown to appreciate this unique community of people (off-roaders is just a small part of what all of us are), which I believe is unique in the UAE for its warmth and sense of collectivity. The way for all of us is forward, and I am happy to be heading forward with all of you.

  25. Congrats @Xaf and well written. This is exactly what is the true meaning of a community, where you give back what you have learned. You and Ale have grown at an astonishing pace. Just last December both of you were at the Newbie level and today have become Advanced and this despite almost two months of COVID lockdown. It just goes to show that with a thinking mind and commitment to the sport one can grow at any pace. And, the real learning starts now. I believe it's relatively easy to do things by ourselves, but to get the Newbies/Fewbie to do what we have in mind during a stuck or refusal is a challenge. It gives personally a lot of satisfaction to see fellow members grow to become such good off-roaders. Cheers

  28. Hereby I want to thank everybody for the birthday wishes and what a nice birthday present to receive in your e-mail box, that is what I call a surprise. Didn't expect the upgrade, I was enjoying the drives with helping out. When I started I was only excited for the rough stuff, but soon it became "normal". Once in a while it is excited to stretch your leg and push your car to the limit, but off-roading offers more then only going full throttle through the desert. I found my peace with helping out the Marshalls and analysing which mistakes the new joiners make. This keeps me busy in my mind and silently I am trying to understand how these mistakes could be avoided. Still, I have a lot to learn. The most difficult part of Off-roading is to instruct and teach others the technique and skills of this hobby. If somebody gets stuck, it might be easy in our eyes to get the car out of the situation. Many times, If we would jump behind the steering wheel, we could get the car out of it in a relative short time. But this is the art, now try to help and teach a person what he did wrong and get him/her out of the situation by him/herself. This is now my occupation and goal, how can I help others to become a better driver, I have a long way to go. Hereby I would like to thank @Rahimdad @Srikumar @Gaurav @Frederic @Emmanuel for the tips and tricks and the fine tuning of my skills. Please don't underestimate these guys. Of course also to the other members and drivers thank you for being together and having nice drives. See you soon, Inshallah. Xaf

  29. Happy birthday @Xaf and congratulations on your promotion. Very well deserved. I have a soft corner for Dutch people and you're part of another group we belong to, so all the more happy to have a fellow like you promoted to the Advanced level. Who better to understand getting the hours under the belt than a pilot. Very happy to see you grow and develop your skills so quickly.

  30. Happy birthday and on top of that this promotion. Who said 2020 was a lost year ? 🤣 Congrats Xaf, you’re a quick learner and you understood that the more drives you do, the more experience you build up. And that includes sweeping in Newbie drives and being around for overall support. Those duties have brought you maturity and people looking up to you as a senior member and a guy that knows what he’s talking about. Looking forward to many more drives together !!

  37. My advice, when buying any second hand car, make friends with a mechanic. Get them to come and look at the car with you. They will pick up on problems that you will miss. Even better if that mechanic has a computer to scan the car. Every fault found is a bargaining chip. As an ex mechanic, I say be nice to any mechanic friends you find. If they come to look at a car buy them a few beers and shawarma.

  38. To find a good used car, you have to put in all the efforts you can... Are we talking like fully agency maintained vehicles? So Full vehicle history is something you should look for. I prefer individual sellers.. If the description is long with well-written information (not copy-paste from google), you know he knows his cars and takes care of it.. Dealerships can ripoff but then if you find a good deal, its worth it. I always thought the Duster is an extremely reliable car. Back in India, you see them like literally anywhere. Very strange the parts are rare like Saleem said.. Something to keep in mind indeed! Dealerships erase all the error codes so it won't pop up when it's scanned.. Some of the codes come back after driving for a while so it could happen after the purchase (common with anything non-Japanese) I have seen the check engine light in my Mercedes like 10 times meanwhile ZERO with the Nissan. =D I'm just a noob here who screwed up the very first used car purchase (clue is there in the sentence above lol), you will get better advice from the MVPs
