For those who would be driving with us for the first time welcome to the Carnity Offroad Club. PREPARATION FOR THE DRIVE AND WHAT TO EXPECT 1) Please ensure that you reach the meeting point on time, i.e., 6:00 AM sharp. Reaching 10 mins early would be better, but dont be late. Also, ensure that you have tow points at the front and rear with 8 inch (min ground clearance) 2) All first timers with Carnity need to ensure that they have gone through the Newbie briefing Video : 3) The senior members on tomorrow's drive would be @Brette and myself. 4) We will be using Carnity Channel 3 tomorrow. (446.05625 Mhz). The instructions to program the radio are provided in the below post. Please ensure that you have a fully charged and programmed radio before the drive. If you are a first timer with Carnity we shall provide you with a spare radio for this drive, if you dont have one. 5) All traction controls, Airbags and ABS need to be switched off. While turning off traction control is mandatory, its ok if you are unable to turn off the Airbags for this drive. Traction Control, ABS and Airbags can be disabled by a button or by pulling the fuse. Incase of any queries you can always ask me or the senior members before the drive or better still, post your queries on this drive post and we would assist. 6) You will need a pressure gauge and deflator as a minimum. If you have a compressor it would be good to being along. 7) For highway tyres you can deflate to 15 psi. Those who have AT tyres, you can deflate to 13 psi. 8 ) Feel free to ask questions at any time. 9) Convoy Numbering will be posted today evening after 8 pm. We shall be starting the drive on some flat tracks and would build up the pace from there depending on the convoy response. We will be driving for about 3.5 hours practicing driving in sand, proper steering control, crossing some dunes, and getting you and your vehicle more familiarized with the desert. By 10:00 am we will be heading out towards the ADNOC gas station. COVID PRECUATIONS COVID is still very much there, so once you reach the meeting point, park your cars at sufficient distance from each other. Always wear your masks while stepping out of your cars. Once done deflating, please get back into your cars immediately. Drivers will be responsible for the compliance of their passengers as well.

I would recommend the 275/70/R17 because at the same deflated pressure, more sidewall would give a better footprint than more width . And yes, try to put in the Yokohama as a first choice. Though it will not win in a beauty contest in comparison to a BFG, but you would appreciate the lighter tyre much more as you go up the ranks. P.S. Am glad to add to the confusion 😜

Hi Adnan. Welcome to Carnity Off-road Club. For the first drive you need to bring a deflator and pressure gauge as a minimum. If you have any off-road gear like radio, flag, compressor and shovel feel free to bring them along. Regarding disabling the airbags on a Prado it's done by pulling the fuse or installing a kill switch. Having said that it's not needed in a Newbie Level drive. So will see you on Friday morning.

Ideally no. If the tyres are worn out I would recommend changing to ATs like Yokohama or Kumho. BFG and Cooper are too heavy and have thick sidewalls which are not the best in the sand. But if the existing tires are in good shape, you can continue using them on the sand. Not the best option, but it will do.

Drive Plan This is an area that I would be driving after a very long time (more than 3 years), and while I dont expect the dune formation to change drastically, I do expect that there might be some surprises in the form of additional fences, pockets, etc. So please bring along your exploration cap and as my intent is to scout the entire area which hosts loads of pyramid shaped dunes, massive bowls, and some star dunes as well. In such kind of dunes and at a Fewbie+ level, it will be about keeping up the momentum and also having the right amount of distance from the car in front. And you will be revving your car to its limit on every step of the way. So look forward to catching up with the Sweihan boys this weekend. P.S. This is a Fewbie Plus drive. Typo error.

The 3rd gear in 4L would be equivalent to 1st gear in 4H (which in a TJ is already configured quite low). I would not recommend driving in 4L for extended periods of time at high speeds. There was earlier an old Pajero member who was part of a dedicated Pajero offroad club where everyone would drive in 4L on the sand, it took him just 4 months to suffer a gear box and transfer case replacement. Also, if you read most owner manuals they mention that the speed in 4L should not exceed 20 km/h. I have not seen anything that cannot be achieved in 4H, to take the chance of driving in 4L.

@Ruan van den Heever where did you go mate? I was under the impression that the last drive was a bit too extreme for you, and that's why you took a break. 😜 But it's good to have you back. Look forward to meeting up with the Sweihan boys, but not this weekend. @Gaurav would be taking over this drive as I have some family commitments on Friday that needs me to be closer to home. But with the weather getting better and with a wonderful group of seasoned AD members, this season is going to be super awesome. I will definitely look forward to spending more time in the AD dunes and that also goes for many of the Leads in Carnity.
