  1. There have been studies that indicate diesel fumes are indeed carcinogenic. The 2 main contributors are soot and PAH (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons). PAHs can directly alter the DNA in your lungs on inhalation causing cell mutations. Soot tends to get stuck in the alveoli which causes inflammation. Surrounding cells try to fight the inflammation which can cause random mutations that may develop into cancer.
  2. It would be nice to see a German autobahn type system but with the attitudes and lack of discipline of some of the drivers here it would never work. They would drive 250-300kph when the weather is good then when it’s foggy or raining they would still do the same speed and cause carnage.
  3. Re: number 7. I’ve seen the video and it’s a lie and a scam to promote the British army. It wasn’t a proper engine change. The engine was pre built and wired and filled with fluids. They hooked up the driveshafts, earth, starter and ignition wire and one petrol pipe. No bolts on the engine mounts, exhaust not hooked up, gearbox and clutch already attached, heck the bonnet didn’t even have screws in it. I know from experience a proper ford escort engine swap takes 15 minutes minimum using air tools. I know because I blew 4 in one week.

    VAT

If VAT reaches 10% I could probably live with it. If it hits 15, I’d be just as well off in my own country. Salaries aren’t that good here in my line of work, especially when you have to compete for jobs with people from third world countries who will work for a quarter of what you’re willing to. Its the low VAT and zero income tax that makes it worth my while. Rent is the real killer though. For what I’m paying for a bedroom in Dubai with shared kitchen and living area, I could have a 4 bedroom house in the uk. When will something be done to address rent prices? Especially when you consider how many new towers keep popping up when there are already thousands of flats empty because of stupidly high rates.
  5. VW, along with Daimler and BMW have admitted to testing the effects of diesel emission fumes on monkeys and humans. As an ex truck and plant mechanic who used to clean black stuff out of his nose every night, I could have told them it was nasty for free. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-42858668
  6. 2 threads with the same title so I merged them. @Sidshk you need to give the video time to load. It’s not as fast as embedded YouTube videos
  7. If you need thicker oil to get oil pressure then there's something wrong with the engine. Probably oil pump or clearance issues in the moving parts like crankshaft bearings etc. First thing I would do would be to screw a proper mechanical pressure gauge in where the oil pressure sensor goes and get some proper readings and take it from there. Could also just be a case of crap oil. Did you change brands? Or any issues with fueling that could be causing petrol in the sump therefore thinning the oil?
  8. It looks like the old one with a new dashboard.

    VAT

VAT at 5% is a non issue. The real issue is some corrupt shopkeepers and company owners using it as an excuse to up prices 25%+ and saying oh, it’s because of VAT sir. Do they really think people are so stupid? Also the rounding up of prices due to the lack of any hard currency under 25 fils. Add up all these 10 and 15 fils here and there and multiply it by the number of customers passing through the doors and you’ll have a LOT of extra scammed dirhams in your pocket at the end of the day.
  10. Yeah it must have been pre launch that you saw. The celica was the original car then they introduced the celica supra in 78 which was sold alongside the celica up to 85 and was basically a bigger version of the celica with similar styling. In 86 the supra dropped the celica name and the celica and supra became 2 different things.
  11. That’s an 86 pre facelift MA70 Supra Liftback. 85 was the last of the Celica Supra which are a lot more square shaped and even rarer. Very nice spot though 👍🏻
  12. I didn’t know Halfords has been around for so long until I saw that catalog. I used to spend hours in the ripspeed section looking at stick on petrol flaps and fake bonnet vents before I got my license. Demon Tweeks was another. You used to get the free catalogue with Max Power magazine. Ah, teenage dreams.
  13. This is the thing with the internet. Sometimes it’s hard to ascertain wether someone is joking or being serious, or just plain crazy.
  14. In theory, a straight pipe can help MPG but not by a noticeable amount. In practice, it noticeably brings it down because you’re always driving everywhere with your foot to the floor to hear the exhaust note. Been there, done that. There are many, many factors that can introduce a rich running condition, you don’t need a tune be it a remap or whatever. Running rich can cause pops and bangs in the exhaust but it’s not always a good thing. You will end up with a melted catalytic converter and spark plugs so black they won’t ignite the mix properly under normal driving conditions.
  15. In my opinion, looking for parts in Sharjah is not a nice place to be. It’s dirty, disorganised and the shops are too spread out. Sajaa is the place to go. It’s a lot easier to find things, the shops are well laid out and properly signed. Heres the location, https://g.co/kgs/VnnYby
  16. Fit a kill switch on the power line to the valve block. Job done 😬
  17. I remember that ad on tv when I was at school. I must be getting old. Still, god bless Peugeot. I used to make a small fortune repairing the 206.
  18. Drilling a hole in the down pipe before the cat is a problem. Exhaust gas is not running through the full system. I.e. It's not reaching the lambda sensors. Lambda sensors analyze the exhaust gas and send a signal to the ECU to tell it how the engine is performing. The ECU in turn, adjusts the fueling to suit. If it's not getting proper lambda readings, the fueling won't be correct. Temperature sensor is also important. If it's sending a signal to the ECU telling the ECU that the engine is cold, more fuel will be requested. This can cause all sorts of long term problems never mind the short term issue of fuel consumption. These are both issues that you need to fix. Exhaust is easy, stick a dab of weld in the hole. Don't bother with exhaust putty, it will blow out again. Check operation of temperature sensor and fit a new one if required. They're not expensive and 5 minute job to fit. I assume you haven't done anything stupid like take the thermostat out? Last thing, get under the car and visibly inspect the tank and fuel lines. Make sure you haven't hit a rock and punctured the tank or shook a fuel line loose. Check EVERYTHING front to back. You won't see a wet patch because petrol evaporates quickly but you will see staining.
  19. Check here https://www.consumerreports.org/cro/news/2016/05/everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-takata-air-bag-recall/index.htm Select car make, go to the next page and choose year and model. There's 6 different recalls outstanding for 2008 Accord for various issues, including airbags/SRS and a potential gearbox fault. You are within your rights to go to Al Futtaim and ask for them all to be repaired free of charge. If they refuse, escalate complaint directly to Honda in Japan and they will instruct the dealer to repair.
  20. Takata recall. Google it. 24 billion dollars worth of faulty airbags. Most manufacturers are affected.
  21. Robert Plants DB5 for sale http://ledzepnews.com/2017/12/12/photos-1965-aston-martin-db5-previously-owned-by-robert-plant-is-up-for-sale/
  22. Evaporator can leak in the X5. I've done a couple. Full day to remove the dash and put everything back in. On a side note, the last one I done had been involved in an accident and the owner didn't know about it. I found resistors connected to the wiring loom where the airbags should have been. Simply keeping topping up the gas isn't a sensible option. If the pressure is going down, the gas is obviously escaping from somewhere and the leak needs to be fixed. AC gas "probably" won't do you much harm but if it's heated, the chemistry changes and it becomes toxic.
  23. We’ve had the best car names ever thread, how about the worst? Heres my 2 nominations, the Isuzu light dump and the Isuzu mega dump. It’s one thing rolling your kandura up and squatting, it’s another when you name a truck you designed after it.
  24. What? Of course you can get LSD oil, all the main manufacturers do it, https://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-970-limited-slip-diff.aspx I wish opie oils was in UAE, would have saved me so many headaches in the past. Order a jar of oil, it's on your doorstep next day. One particular instance, I rebuilt an eaton supercharger for a MINI. Couldn't find the oil anywhere for love nor money, parts shops all told me there's no such thing as supercharger oil. But of course there is, what else is inside the supercharger? Eventually found a GM part number for it so went to all the GM dealers, sorry sir, no such part number, doesn't exist. They were just too lazy to get it for me. Ended up waiting 2 months for that desertcart guy to drop ship it from USA. It won't lock, i.e. spin one wheel. Usually when it gets to that stage, it's banjaxed and needs rebuilt. Without stripping and inspection, the easiest thing you can do is fill it up and see if it still works. Probably worth dropping the old oil out and seeing what it looks like first. If it's black and smells clutchy, it's not a good sign.
