Hi Ma7amad, I myself owned a 1998 Discovery 1 for 5 years, the best 5 years of my life. What an amazing drive. I know a garage in Sharjah which handles only Land Rovers, give them a Range Rover, Discovery, LR2, LR3, LR4, Defender, anything Land Rover and they know what they are doing. Shizzles. I have to keep myself awake if I am driving on a straight and half empty road, I can't imagine if I am on auto pilot, I might wake up on the other side. For now I will keep my driving purely manual, or else where is the joy of driving. Auto pilot must be good for some people, but it is only technology and people need to pay attention to the road even if there is an auto drive function in their vehicle. The horror story last year about a Toyota Land Cruiser being stuck in Cruise Control at 140 KPH gives me the shivers. Cruise Control being around now for ages gives me less confidence in this auto pilot and being old fashioned I would prefer to keep my limbs where they are supposed to be, hands on the steering wheel, foot on accelerator and brake, eyes on the road.

They must be doing something right for the percentage to drop that drastically. Keep up the good work.

Points well noted, but today I saw a Land Cruiser on the Sharjah-Dubai highway. From standstill to maximum 30 km/h was the scenario and that guy was swerving from one lane to another at times missing the other cars by a very small margin. How can you restrict that. It is not about putting restrictions, its about inculcating courtesy and common sense in the drivers. Its a matter of habit and although habits are hard to change, specially bad ones and takes time to change the driving culture in any place, but proper education, plus some punishment like serving those people who were effected in car accidents should be taken care of for a month or so by these rash drivers. Let them see and exchange stories of the evils that haunt those who disobeyed laws and thought they were in control of every situation because they managed to escape a couple of close shaves. Today its only fines and black points, and confestication of vehicles which can be released if you pay a higher fine. Today you can get rid of some of your black points by buying white points. Today those effected by accidents are taken care of by nurses appointed by government hospitals and paid by the sale of number plates in Dubai. Where are the kind of punishments that will educate these people to understand what we can see now, here on this forum? Education and patience is the key, and punishment that will educate, not the current fine structure. Just my 2 fils.

Mind you Girix, the new shape of the patrol didn't do too well with some of the people here and it did not gain the same popularity as the Land Cruiser, hence Nissan still has the classic Nissan Patrol out there. Plus point for Nissan is they listened to the crowd and the SWB Nissan patrol Classic comes with a 4.8 litre engine with the gearing from the 4.8 litre as well. The gearing makes a huge difference and the off-road community would be totally aware of what I am talking about, as the 4.5 litre engine was not so bad, but the gearing ratios on the 4.5 made it an awful choice for the desert. Just my 2 cents.

Sharjah has a lot of car upholstery shops in the industrial area. You can get a custom made upholstery at a cost of your choice with the options of fabric, leather or rexine (faux leather). There are also shops around in Sharjah or Deira near Hyatt Regency which do ready made car upholstery. Hope this helps.

For me beauty is only skin deep, so I look at the inside. For me all the great 4x4s that have been turned to egg look alikes on 4 wheels that loose their 4x4 gears are all ugly vehicles. the likes of the new Pathfinder which now comes as a front wheel drive or higher models that have Al Wheel Drive that lost all the 4x4 capability is ugly. We are part of the reason this has happened, over the years in the consumers have bought 4x4s as a 7 or 8 seater to carry a big family in style, as a van or similar would be against their pride. So these 4x4 over the years have served every purpose but what they were meant to do, which is off-road driving and the UAE has no shortage of beauty in the desert and the mountains when the weather is right. So naturally the car companies continue to produce these models but understanding that less than 20% such vehicles would serve the purpose of off-roading, they are getting rid of the off-road gear to reduce the weight and cost of production and boast higher fuel economy figures. To me those are ugly.

Go for Taqir advise, Toyota and Nissan don't loose as much on depreciation specially on a long term basis. However right now the market is not so good and more people want to sell than buy a car.

If you are planning to gift it to me no need for thinking twice, both my hands are wide open whether GCC, American, Japanese or European specs.

Just like Pajero used highly modified Pajeros to win the Dakar Rally 7 times in a row to set a frenzy of people buying Pajeros for Off-Road purpose. Although not as modded as the Pajero used in the Dakar Rally, but that gave them a good blueprint to work with and outcome is a very capable and affordable option along with comfort for both on-road and off-road purpose.

Thank you for the compliments Gaurav Bhai, but don't forget I learned it from the best, from my seniors like you. The last time I went with my brother Karamullah for his Bike group ride and they went straight from the Maliha/Kalba road to reach Kalba. Winding road through the mountain range, absolutely beautiful sight and maybe some photography buffs can also join to get some awesome pics and videos. Just my 2 fills.

If you are travelling between different Emirates than it is better to use Google Maps, Next time I am travelling within Dubai I will give it another go, but disappointing not to find certain points in Dubai.

Sounds like a good idea, I would like to see it develop and than commit to the drive. My brother has his Chevy Lumina SS which he only modified the exhaust from Fox Sport and special paint which makes it stand out. If his health permits I would definitely ride with him on this one.

You are welcome to the best car enthusiast gathering in one place in this region. Just a suggestion would be to know more about your vehicle and what it requires, otherwise majority of garages in Dubai will rip you saying they know and done all, charge you half the price what the dealers would have charged you to make you happy, but only change oil and leave car for half day. Don't be ignorant, pick up the car manual or find the information on the internet as to what is required on each service interval. Be informed, avoid getting robbed. Sorry Barry, this was not meant for you. Just a very general remark about the common practices in this region.
