2007 Ford Excursion review

Few vehicles can match the Excursion in terms of sheer impact on the highway. Ford’s biggest SUV boasts three rows of seats, with a capacity of up to nine adults, plus best-in-class interior volume and space. Everything about this SUV is matched in scale: the engines on offer are big in capacity as is its external dimensions. The exteriors of Excursion models show off bodyside alterations that complement their tough, robust style. The XLS model has body colour mouldings while chrome tubular running boards are options on the four-wheel-drive XLT, Eddie Bauer and Limited models.

Several design touches underscore ease and convenience. While nearly all SUVs have either a tailgate or lift-glass rear cargo door, Excursion blends both features into its Tri-Panel door system. The door has a separate lift-glass for convenient small-parcel loading and lightweight twin swing-out composite doors with no visibility-blocking centre pillar.

There are four trim levels to choose from: XLS, XLT, Eddie Bauer and Limited trims, all with an assortment of handy accessories. A dual-media audio system is standard on XLS, XLT and Eddie Bauer models while a six-disc in-dash CD player is standard on Limited. In the cabin, adjustable pedals are available on XLT, Eddie Bauer and Limited models. An overhead console is fitted with auxiliary air conditioning controls, courtesy lights and bins for a garage door opener and sunglasses while a second-row overhead console includes auxiliary climate controls.

An equally large 6.8-litre SOHC Triton V10 engine that churns out 330 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque propels this particularly hefty and heavy SUV, giving it the muscle to haul this massive vehicle in an unexpectedly lively manner. A five-speed TorqShift automatic transmission is employed to transfer power to the ground.

A rear obstacle detection system is optional with XLT models while dual front airbags and antilock 4-wheel disc brakes are standard. Equipment levels are fine and there is more than adequate room inside for the occupants to lounge in comfort. The Excursion gives you a good ride (mostly due to sheer weight) and the handling does an acceptable job of making up for its mass. But don’t expect much in the way of driver involvement or crisp dynamics – this vehicle is utility overkill, no more and no less.
