Hi guys. Just wanted to update this thread - I've seen 3 more mechanics (thanks @Carnity, the 'Get Quotes in Minutes' feature works) and all 3 have basically confirmed that the tappets are to blame. Although 1 of them said that this is normal and I should just put thicker oil (no, not Saleem). Anyway, I'm saving up for parts as each tappet/lifter is Dhs 30 from Divya and Dhs 54 from Habtoor. Replacing all 24 will add up so I guess its a no brainer where I should get them. I've been quoted no less than Dhs 500 for labour in several garages (a whole day's work) so I guess it will take time before I update this thread again with an 'after' results. But once done, I will surely post the results here.

As a car enthusiast, I'm sure you must be having tons of experience with mechanics and workshops in UAE. List your worst mechanic experience here with as much as details, I'll start with mine: Back in those when I got my new license and my first car, I was very happy with the first mechanic who has served me honestly and fairly all the times. After I sold my Sunny, I got an Accord, he has been maintaining that as well. Every time I take the car for other jobs, I use to ask him to check everything from engine - gear - bushes etc and every time he used to say yes all done. As few of Honda guys know that Accord is notorious for gearbox failure, so on first jerk or late shifting, I reported to him and ask him to change the gear oil and filter. And after that still gearbox died and I went to gear specialist who showed me stale oil and said it was never changed. That gear rebuilding because of cheating cost me 10 times the price of gear oil change and forced me to not to trust mechanics again. Get a critical job in front of your eyes - no matter how much you trust your mechanic or long relation you had. Then again things change and I met real professionals and start trusting mechanics again but with a "pinch of salt".

If all the engines you’re getting are scrap I would just rebuild your own. It’s not a massive job. Pull the heads off and check them for flatness along with the block decks. Skim a couple of thou off if necessary. Stick a couple of gaskets in and it’ll be as good as new. If you skim the heads or decks, it’ll up the compression ratio a bit and you’ll gain a couple of horsepower.

Also, you can call these 6 used spare part guys from your office and see if it helps. As soon as I saw the title of the thread Badain Jaran came to mind, but then opened the thread to see its all about Badain Jaran. I've been fascinated by this desert for over a decade now. I think the boys are doing an episode there in the current season of The Grand Tour. Should be good telly.

I made a very similar system myself a while back, It worked fine but i ran across some issues when clipping on the hose to the tyre. Due to some wear and tear on the valve the air came out faster on one tyre in comparison with the other. As a result of that i would have the front tyre at 18psi while the back tyre was at 14psi. From what i see the INdeflate clip-on system looks a bit better so you might not have that problem.

Badain Jaran is actually seen as the chinese section of the Gobi desert. The dunes there can reach 500m. What do you say, guys ?

Yes I forwarded number of Jabal Tokyo to Rishi, the guy that runs the workshop where my car is. He’s been calling around and going to Sharjah on a daily basis to source engines. Please do forward the other places, I might go and check myself in Sharjah on Saturday. I work in Jebel Ali so i can never reach Sharjah during the week.

Make sense to check what's inside the old engine and to what extent damage has been done. Are you in touch with Ahmed from jabal tokyo? And which all places have you scouted the used engine, I know 3 more places

If you really want to keep this car for a very long time, replacing all 24 is a good idea. Alternatively, you can just replace the one that is affected or a couple more with doubts. This happens due to a late oil change or bad quality or wrong spec engine oil, which if you take care then it won't repeat in future

Yes weak AC compressor takes time to start effective cooling. Ideally, AC should be cooling within 15-30 seconds of being switched on. @shadow79 and @Barry can advise further

That's where rear diff lock switch is located in my 99 Pajero.

I can relate to this I was using the JT Brooks deflators but I could not get them to work right no matter how many times I practiced I always got over-deflated in one tire. This last weekend I tried the IndeFlate Tire Inflator and Deflator and I loved it, I finished deflating first than the other cars around me and it took me around 5 minutes to inflate all 4 tires. The only con is that it seems a little overwhelming and bulky at first to see all the hoses but once you get the hang of it you finish very fast. This allowed me to install my flag while I was deflating so two birds with one stone.

What more to ask... had all the fun of driving in desert.... off course different from all the previous drives I attended and feel lot more confident. @skumar83 a big thank you to you... drive was really fast this time... we covered a lot of distance in the desert. My friend left asking me to arrange a rent car for him to drive next time. @Gaurav and @Rahimdad perfect briefing to understand what to expect... excellent guidance... @Atif I now understand role of a second lead and the associated responsibilities. That last minute message saved my bumper and Thanks for towing me out when I was stuck.... overall... excellent drive except for a minor incident. I hope to see you all with the same spirit next time and sort this issue in the best possible way... Again, let’s all learn from it and be cautious next time... cheers.....

The workshop installed two engines that were shipped in, unfortunately both are not running properly. We are now sourcing another one and at the same time opening my original engine to see if a rebuild would make sense. So definitely itching to get back off-road 😣

If only.... two engines installed and both were bad. Now on to third engine 😥
