  1. Can you afford to import from the USA directly? I'm not talking about Ebay or Amazon- there are major suppliers of new parts in the US that specialize in the stuff you'll be looking for. Many of these guys buy up, and have bought up entire stock inventories when models of all makes went out of production. When I was still in the trade I used to buy (import) parts for cars from the 50's and 60's (and considerably earlier) all the time, often still in the original packaging. I don't have any contact details anymore, but a quick Google search should point you in the right direction soon enough.
  2. I once passed up a Triumph Stag in mint condition in favor of a slightly used V6 Alfa GTV. Worst mistake of my life that was...
  3. And the luck o' the Irish to you, sir. May it replace some of the sweat and tears that will, as you rightly predict, follow the blood very soon.
  4. Once upon a time (long ago), I took on a similar project, and also on the "costs-kept-to-a-minimum" basis. I don't know what happened though, maybe I just did it wrong, but in the end, the project cost more to complete than a proper restoration project on a '59 Studebaker I did two years previously. Just thought I'd put that thought out there...
  5. What is the proposed budget for this?
  6. More to the point though, just how long do you intend to run the full boost pressure of the blower in Barry's pics for?
  7. That's true, but why go to the trouble of making it road legal then? Why not just build a purely race-ready car, since it will save them the homologation costs?
  8. To me, a car like this is really pointless. After all, who can really use it to its full potential except on race tracks, where there are a dozen or more other cars just like it?
  9. Expected lifetime of the engine with that blower?
  10. It only looks that way. In reality, space is a violent, harsh, and dangerous place where radiation will cook you like a BBQ chicken in no time flat if you are not careful.
  11. No idea, but what I can tell you with certainty is that SUV's are getting uglier with each new release.
  12. A pretty solipsistic view of the issue, to be sure...
  13. I have to agree with @desertdude. Diff locks are nice to have but most of the time, proper tire deflation, proper driving techniques, common sense, and a manual gearbox will get you through sticky situations without ever needing a diff lock.
  14. Bear in mind though that kinetic straps need to recover after each use. Typical recovery times vary, but a good quality strap should regain its original length in about 8 - 12 hours or so.
  15. Perhaps because one never sees the vehicles that offer a little more comfort and character on continent-wide overland trips?
  16. I'm still not sure if @Barry was serious or not when he suggested that the OP should cut the power to the valve body to prevent untimely gear shifts. I'm sort of hoping he was just joking...
  17. Why did you drill a hole in the exhaust system anyway? Anyway, @Barry is right- if the ECU gets a signal saying the engine is cold, it will adjust the fuel trims to improve combustion- since ti thinks the engine is cold. This works much like a choke used to work on a carburetor, so getting the temp gauge issue fixed should be your first priority, immediately after plugging the hole in the exhaust.
  18. Maybe I should have stated it more clearly- but my point remains the same. Also, I think it is very difficult to get too much momentum while a vehicle is running in low range. For the rest, I completely agree with @desertdude- practice, practice, and more practice under the supervision of an experienced driver is the only way to learn how to drive safely in an off-road environment. Relying on videos will only get you into trouble.
  19. Because there is something wrong with the air bags on some Honda models.
  20. In L4 you had twice the traction you had in L2, since the front diff was now engaged. However, when you are climbing dunes the thing you need most is momentum- if you have enough of it, you don't need as much traction and if you get it right, you can get to the top of the dune much more easily. The only way to learn how to get momentum right is to join as many drives as you can, and to listen to, and watch, experienced drivers.
  21. What you want is a kinetic strap that stretches when a load is applied to it, which reduces the stresses and strains on both vehicles. You may also want to research the topic of vehicle recovery, and learn how to calculate the actual weight of a stuck vehicle, which varies depending how the vehicle is stuck. To be safe though, get a kinetic strap that is rated for at least 15 tons- this will get you out of almost all sticky situations safely, and without damage to either vehicle.
  22. I can't even think of a suitable response to this....
  23. Especially given the fact that the only thing a Dakar-grade Pajero shares with a normal, bog standard Pajero is the name... Anyhow, my nomination(s) for the worst-named car is almost anything that follows the word Renault; take your pick- Kadjar, Twingo, Kwid, Kango, Koleos, etc. etc. etc....
