Go with whatever vehicle manufacturer says in term of the specification and get from reputable oil change service station and not just drum dealers - you know what I mean. My only intent to save that irritating squeaking and not the money, Barry and Saleem - both mechanics know me well that I don't spare a dime on my Pajero, so this happens to be more of the situational experiment than anything else. Every time I spray WD40 it stay quiet for next 6-7 months, so overall in last 2 years I have sprayed 3-4 times only. Oh yes, I rem that very well.

I am not against and nor in favor of the belt treatment, although it sounds VERY PROMISING and there is no harm in trying once on the exterior belts like AC, Steering and Fan. Of course not with timing belt unless fully convinced. I'm using WD40 on all my belts first squeak I hear and to be honest, I think I have delayed the change period. I do exactly what above video showed but with WD40 when the vehicle is off, I spray generously as far as I can reach and wait for 2 minutes and start engine and let it run for 15-20 seconds and spray again with engine off - do it 3-4 times until belts become moisturized and all squeaking has gone. I'm using Pajero for 7 years now - only long ownership car, rest all I flip within 2 years. First two times I changed all my belts within 2 years time, and now since 3-4 years, I haven't changed them. because (for ex) stock motor designed to push 10 kg tire per wheel and if you bump to 18 kg tire per wheel then it will slow down the car top speed, acceleration, and hill climb to a greater extent. Bottom line, tire mod will be good if you do the engine or power modification too.

I hear your point of longer footprints, but if you see those longer footprints are pretty much useless as the car will always move in front or back so actual tirestamp will be the same in thinner cycle tire, no matter how big footprint you get length wise. It's the wider that makes floatation better and yet not too wide as I explained earlier. Just a tad wider is enough.

Itn't crap but it's a fact, as apart from 2 cm wider tire there were other lots of factors: BFG is way toooooo heavy, as compared of Geolander BFG have way too aggressive tread, good for the mountain but not good for desert hill climb with stock motor 2006 - 4.5 SWB Patrol has 194 hp as VS 1999 - 3.5 SWB Pajero has 225 hp Patrol has known issue with that year Manual gearing VS Pajero 4WD super select tranny has been proven a goldmine Pajero is 100 kg lighter than Patrol

Taller tires (less wider one) used in many stock applications, as manufacturers want to get best of fuel mileage, 0-100 response and less rolling resistance by a trade-off to the best desert experience. I have seen thin cycle tires on defender, wrangler, and people assume they are the best for the desert as they are OEM size. lol. By increasing tire width to a reasonable size, you will have better flotation that will get you less stuck as treks mentioned and also give you bigger footprints for self-recovery if stuck. Cycle tires will dig deeper and deeper at the moment when you want to crawl out of the situation. In my opinion, increasing OEM width by 10-15% is a good move and beyond that is also good but that comes with a bigger trade-off as too heavy tires will restrict your climb capabilities seriously. I had 4.5 SWB Patrol with 285 BFG and never climbed up Faya or Iftar Bowl, what I can do with my 3.5 SWB Pajero with 265 Geolanders.

I totally agree Barry that we lack a lot of car magazine here and Wheels is or was the only one that came close to the motoring enthusiast. I used to collect Wheels edition and given up after few years when I realized it contains more of commercials and advertorial than the real motoring information.

This newbie drive was truly filled with new surprises. We welcome two newbies - Faraz Ahmed with FJC and Faizan Ahmed with Xterra. Both were eager to learn, well prepared and ready to test their beast capabilities. As we entered our best sandbox for training, within few hours we have reached to the right side of Pink Rock in medium range dunes. Usually, this area is for 2nd or 3rd newbie drive, but the convoy response and two newbies kept me motivated to explore new boundaries. The second surprise was to see Noor after a very long time and that too with a wedding ring in his finger. Congrats buddy. The third was the Sertac holding on to sweep duties for the first time with very capable and controlled command. Good job. As we reach the Pink Rock and played for a while and then all the cars crossed on to the other side to find a good spot for the break. Just before we could end the drive, both the newbie decided to test our recovery skills in very surprising stuck - next to each other and FJC rested fully on the front and back bumpers. That was a sight to be held, I hope someone can share the pic here for that historic stuck for winning a best stuck ever contest.
