Barry
Whilst it is an unfortunate accident, these are not full size dragsters and are only capable of around 30mph. Most go karts go faster than that. The sport is more about reaction times at the Christmas tree than top speed at the end of the strip. It does raise the question though, what age should children be allowed to operate mechanically powered devices? One problem is that children mature at different ages. At that age, I was driving tractors around the farm but other people I knew where still having their butts cleaned by their mother.
