I leave it up to anyone to buy whatever they want. I only advise newbies to start with a radio that is not too expensive and easy to set up for the main reason that starting a hobby is not a cheap thing and they will be confronted with many other investments along the way. Once you reach the point that you fully understand the functionalities and flaws of that radio, you can perfectly upgrade to a Yaesu or something more professional. The MT777 (now made by Crony) is sharing lots of components with the Baofeng radios. I recently programmed a Crony radio with a Baofeng programming cable and Baofeng software. The main components to look at are: * Sound: A 200dhs radio will probably sound louder and more crisp than a 50dhs model. * Battery: A 2000mAh battery will last longer than a 1200mAh one. * Build quality. * Availability of accessories, support, etc...

@Frederic totally agree with you on "starting a hobby is not a cheap thing". I am already being taken to task at home for spending on all the off road stuff. Some of which I had to hide from my better half . :-))

Was supposed to fly TRV - DXB - LAX for a trade show, but when I arrived in DXB this morning they told us the trade show had been cancelled. Would have been OK - but for the fact that I did another leg DXB - TRV yesterday (to originate on the whole flight). As I was on EK even thought you might be 'driving' 😂 Like I said, at least I am here and free Friday so now I am spoilt for choice.

Hi all, E.C. here. 5+ years in DXB. Just got myself a Jeep Wragler JK in July'19. Waited so long, but better be late than never. Went dune bashing twice and have some "wounds" to show for it.

At the moment yes, but I have a feeling that in the future this might change. When the club grows and has more marshalers/ experienced people and volunteers to lead a convoy on another day of the week..... I bet my money on that this will happen.

Correct i was in DM earlier this week and saw a banner that showed them at 75AED per piece. The Kenwood TK-UV3 is indeed mostprobably a chinese knockoff. That's why i am more inclined to go for Baofeng due to the amount of information, tutorials, and accesories available.

There seems to be a promo for the Baofengs at DG for 70 aed per piece. They only had a few available (100) I have been in China 3 months ago, talked with a shop owner in one of those underground markets, I could get the UV-5R for 100 Yuan per piece, not bulk price, “retail”. Thats 52 aed. In my opinion, you shouldn’t pay more then 100 aed for them. Also without promotion they are offering them for around 100 aed at DG. Regarding the Kenwood TK-UV3, if it was a real Kenwood, I would definitely go for the Kenwood, but I am almost sure that they are copies with just the Kenwood labels. Same like the Motorola’s.

Baofengs are cheap I'll give them that, but they also sound cheap. If you are on the other side of the radio you can know who is using a baofeng because you cant understand what they are saying.

Sure, but if you’re still new to offroading we would recommend that you to drive alone first to avoid any distractions.

Hi everyone. Just to introduce myself as a new member. Father of Chloe and Harvey, in Dubai for 8 years now and living in Mira for the past 2. Off -roading is a relatively new part of our lives, just 6 months playing in the sand. It's the hobby we never knew was missing. That looks great. Thanks for sharing. As i am currently driving my wife's car (same as yours) i'll probably need to get the same done. Although i have a tow hitch underneath that cover so i think this one is giving some protection too.

Also agree, that was the reason why I went to the motorola mt7777, not a real motorola btw, but sound quality is a bit better than the Baofeng.

What happened?

There are some guys on Youtube that did some trials with bigger antennas, some with better results, some with much worse results as the unit is normally calibrated with the standard antenna. Especially the UV5R is super popular in USA with the HAM radio guys, so they try out all these things.

To be honest from little research and quick look online, they dont look too different as in offroad tires tread pattern and rubber quality plays a huge role. Based on G012 insanely awesome experience from 7 years of offroad, I still suggest to try G015 as they look pretty much same. If anyone who have used both, can shed more light and correct me if I'm wrong.

@Denizzalbayrak as long as the level is newbie it will be more or less similar level. Only terrain and time will be different. Choose one that suits you best as per timing or area.
