hi @Sajith Kumar fixing a new model vehicle seat to the older model at times gets a little difficult as explained by @desertdudeseat connectors and wiring harness dont match and you may face challenges with the seat electrical's. I suggest if you go to any upholstery shop they should be able to re-cushion the seats and you can custom design it as per your taste and comfort level. This will also help you to revamp your interiors and you will end up paying much less then fixing in a new model seat and also struggling with getting the electrical s switches sorted out.

Hi @Sajith Kumar can you please let me know what shops did you have that seat upholstered? Thanks

  2. @vishlad702  I just replaced my front shock absorbers a month ago and I let Autopro to replaced it for me rather than Habtoor. You will got a good labour discount (50%) if maybe you purchased the DSF Nissan Patrol promotion raffle coupon (Etisalat, Du, Salik card).

Just a suggestion in case your concern with the budget too. I recommend Auto Pro Al Nahda 1, there were two technicians there that worked from Mitsubishi Habtoor and they handle the job very well.

First of all thank you for this discussion thread.

I have the following piece of information to share regarding cost of timing belt replacement:

I put my car in the workshop for 100K service which is covered in a PM contract this morning. The indicative price for replacing timing belt and spark plugs is around 3700 AED with an ongoing campaign discount and it is not covered by the PM contract thus I have to pay.

    regards,

Hi Maharuf, Yes your right. I just done mine too last 29th August at the Agency its good that they have the offer and still going on. I was about to buy only parts that time with them and let my known Garage to do the timing belt replacement, comparing the spare parts (discounted) plus the Garage will charge me against the Agency Offer, I'd realize that its just a matter of 500-600 AED I can save with the garage, so I decided to let the Agency do it.

The review is written considering the fact that a 20 year old car is being driven in the year 2018 with its current main purpose being for offroading

    Pros
    - Old School Driving
    - Bullet proof Inline 4.0 Engine
    - Light Weight Unibody Construction
    - Extremely Capable Offroader
    - Easy to Modify

    Cons
    - Basic Features
    - Famous for Death Wobble
    - Reliability is a concern
    - Tends to overheat unless modification is done

A car that was initially launched in 1984 as a compact utility vehicle, the Cherokee XJ has grown to be one of the originators and the precursor to the current day SUVs. Its design has been noted as one of the greatest of all time. Popular Mechanics listed the XJ as one of "the 25 greatest boxy cars of all time". It is built on a unibody construction which offers it a light weight body

    Vehicle Specs
    - 6 cylinder inline 4.0 engine
    - Power 190 hp @ 4300 rpm
    - Torque 305 N.m @ 3000 rpm
    - Gross Weight of approx 1400 kg
    - Transmissions are 5 speed manual or 4 speed automatic.

In the UAE market, the XJ is available in GCC, American (most common) and Japanese specs. One should be careful while buying the American Spec or rather the American import cars as many of them have been in some sort of accident with some of them having serious damage. Traditionally Cherokee XJs do run hot due to their limited size of the radiator, and hence the GCC Spec is the most preferred version.

Cherokee XJs come with solid front and rear axles. Though an outdated technology in comparison to Independent Suspension, it follows the principal of KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid). Hence a very rugged design which is useful when one takes this car offroad. Further, modifications in terms of lift kit and installation of bigger tyres is relatively easier compared to an Independent Suspension vehicle. However, saying that, the vehicle in stock condition runs a finely balanced suspension, and any alteration such as a lift can trigger the famous death wobble especially with worn out busing and joints.

In current times, most buyers of this vehicle are mainly offroad enthusiasts, who appreciate the the high power to weight ratio (135 hp per ton). However, in offroad the manual version does overshine the automatic version purely because in the automatic version the lowest possible gear that can be selected is a 1-2, and the vehicle does tend to upshift after reaching a speed of 40 km/h which kills the entire torque which is the most critical aspect of steep uphill climbs. While this issue can be overcome by selecting 4 low in the transfer case it does put a lot of strain on the engine as its revving at 5000+ rpms. I strongly recommend to go for a GCC spec manual transmission as that gives one the liberty to choose the right gear for the moment which is especially useful in long steep hill climbs as shown in the below videos:

    Location : Sweihan

Location : Faya (from the right side)

Reliability is a definite concern with the Cherokee XJ, and hence I advise those who are interested in this vehicle to get the vehicle properly inspected before doing a purchase. Further, it is advisable to get all the wearable parts replaced with original MOPAR parts instead of cheap after market parts before venturing into the desert.

I have been driving this vehicle for the past year both as a daily driver as well as my weekend drives and have thoroughly enjoyed every moment. The vehicle I drive is almost stock except for the following modifications:

    1. Replaced the existing radiator with a 4 core aluminium radiator
    2. Added extra fans infront of the radiator to improve the cooling under offroad driving conditions
    3. 3" inch lift by installing harder suspensions

Major expenses in terms of maintenance has been replacement of clutch and flywheel, along with replacements of the track bar and some bushings.

Conclusion : Would I recommend this vehicle to others?

Would definitely recommend a manual transmission Cherokee XJ if you are able to get a good clean vehicle (which can be quite rare and difficult to find) as its a lot of fun to drive this vehicle. It would also help to have a good mechanic as your friend to help you with the fixes from time to time. I bought the vehicle for AED 11,000 (slightly above the market price), plus I spent an additional AED 5000 to get it to current condition, but I have not yet regretted my decision.

  5. Custom made you can try in Damascus Street, Dubai, there's about 4-6 shops if your heading to Sharjah it was on the Right Side (from Spinneys/ Snow white Garments till next Traffic Signal) they're doing a custom seat cover & floor mats which as per texture & quality that might fit on your budget but as Danny said it will cost you 600-800 or till 1000 I can say, which I guess more worth to have than the ready made which cost you around 600.

  6. Agree with shadow79, its a strong car and reliable car as well. I have mazda 3 (2012) and Im using it for my daily drive to work-home Abu dhabi- Dubai everyday. for straight 4.5 years.

What major issue I found with this car was, about the transmission, It's gave a jerk while the gear shifts from higher gear to the lower gear (I guess it's happen due to my way of driving before which sometimes I do Engine break & setting it to manual transmission while overtaking). It was fixed at least by changing one sensor on the transmission & changing the gear oil. (note that original gear oil is only available from them).

Its a good car just ensure that it has taking care by the first owner & well maintained as well.

  7. Dear Mates,

Is it true that Pajero 2012 model doesn't have cabin air filter?, I have a used one and I requested Al Habtoor to change it but they said it doesn't have cabin filter, but from the internet it says that it has to be change at least every 6 months.

I am complaining with them the bad smell of the rear fan everytime I switched it as well. Might you can help me to get rid of it, I tried SONAX the one available from Zoom/ ENOC but still the smell was their.

    Thanks in Advance.

  8. On my 2012 Sedan car since new, I tried at least 3 brand of tires already they are:

    1) TOYO- Original tires from purchased (2012) (Tire Rotation done regularly)

My Review: Good road handling but easy to wear & road noise/ noisy tires

    2) Hankook Ventus- Installed around Oct. 2013 (Tire Rotation done regularly)

My Review:Comfort, Quiet but less response on breaking

    3) Nitto- Installed around July 2015 (Tire Rotation done regularly)

My Review: Good grip on the road & Handling, little bit noisy on the road

Next week, again I am planning to replace my Nitto tire as the tire noise was getting more day by day, I am using my Sedan car for my daily drive from Dubai (Home) to Abu Dhabi (Office), so I am little bit more concern on the tire noise and road handling, I heard that General Tires are good (German Technology) price is cheap also or otherwise I will might consider Hankook Optimo which they said they were both quiet on the road and good grip on road handling as well.

  9. Thanks Derick for your reply. I asked ENOC to check my A/C system as per initial check they says, Gas is Okay, Compressor responding well, they cleaned the evaporator by blowing water but still it works same.

What was that Nissan OEM coolant your using is that 30 pre mixed or 5o pre mixed (hope you still remember the coolant specs)?

  10. Dear Mates,

I need your expertise and experience regarding changing engine coolant, I observed that my airconditioning system cooling was not as same cold before when I was not changing the engine coolant. I just made the engine coolant change at one of the Petrol Station in Dubai and they used their own brand for it.

Is it really necessary to use only Mitsubishi engine coolant or would you guys recommend some coolant brand that you use for your Pajero.

    Thanks
