I like to keep it short but seeing different responses, it will get a little bigger. US sites are good to get the specs data like weight and road noise, but over 50% of those tires don't exist in UAE at least the same pattern and design. So they are only useful once you zero down to 2-3 exact pattern, brand, and types and then research to compare. These days I have been seeing ESMA sticker on every tire in UAE to tell the road noise and other specs, that you can use to compare wisely as those standardizations is done in UAE for tires available here. All online tire selling website is at least 100 per tire expensive than the dealers in sharjah tire market. Once you decide what you want, call a few tires shop in Sharjah and get the latest production tire from the cheapest of the shop. You will save at least 400-500 dhs. I'm buying tires from those shops for 15 years and always walk away with the best deal. Future tyre "WAS" good place to go in Ras Al Khor, but as per my and few of my friend's recent experience, they have been overcharging by 200% so I no longer recommend them but no doubt they are professionals. Coming to the tire choices now: Michelin's are my all time favorite, I have used them twice Michelin LTX and Michelin Pilot, both were amazing. LTX used to be A/T tread and very good for sand offroad being soft and lighter and very quiet on road. Michelin rubber is really superior grade but not very advisable if you venturing too much in wadi's as after a little you might cut that soft rubber with stones very easily. @Emmanuel using Michelin Primacy (If I rem correctly) and he can advise more on that specific brand and type. Yokohama Geolander A/T is my current favorite choice as Yoko's have finally figured out the best of three combinations: Road + Sand + Rocks with minimal of road noise, rem I said minimal and not no noise. Any A/T tire will be loud as hell on road due to the tread pattern to be aggressive for offroad and hence result in more road noise. So this trade-off is inevitable if you like one tire to fit both your needs. I'm using G012 version since last 6 years, as my second set running since last two years and they wear evenly too to get you some good miles on them, unlike many other A/T tires which start losing chunks and pieces after the first year of usage. BF Goodrich, has the amazing offroad capabilities but quite heavy and will limit your offroad capability if you are running on the stock engine without any power mods. Secondly, they are quite noisy on the road since I used them last but again someone I met recently said they are not noisy any longer. Either that guy had loud music system or BFG have really changed on road noise, I don't know tbh. Bridgestone dueler and Dunlop Grandtrek is good road tread and not good for regular offroad especially in wadis and rock you might damage them with regular wadi's run. In sand, if you deflate them under 15 PSI, you might pop out them very easily. I have used them both on my Land Cruiser and Nissan Patrol and labeled as king of pop out on every drive.

Having a refusal or getting completely stuck is something nobody should feel guilty about, since it's part of the off-roading game. It’s also an essential experience in your learning. Somehow, as long as you can understand what happened so you won’t repeat the same mistake over and over, it’s a must to improve. There are hundreds of reasons why you can get stuck. Some of them don’t directly depend on the driver (it can be related to an engine issue, the terrain, the climate, etc.), while others are just mistakes. Some of them are clear and obvious, others are more unpredictable and difficult to identify… As a big fan of @Rahimdad’s What Went Wrong ? thread, it came to my mind that we could simply adapt his brilliant idea by analyzing, not accidents, but stucks, and try to make together a list of all the possible reasons behind them. Please do share here your guesses, explanations... and videos. I’ll start easy, with one of my best stucks this year, which happened in Area 53 two weeks ago (I borrowed the footage from @Javier M). Try one of the newbie drives with us and then judge yourself again. I was like this for the first 6 months and used to hate the desert due to constant stucks and pop out, slowly when I learn the basics, things become much easier and I started enjoying desert more than wadi's. Exactly what Sri said, I was about to say the same. Plus RTA tire passing is not on firm 5-year span, anything above 3 years above the manufacturing date will be decided by the inspection guy based on remaining tread life, cracks, missing chunks etc.

I have been driving a Pajero 3.8 which was initially supplied with Dunlop, and then changed to Yokohma and then currently Nexen. Onroad frankly, I have not noticed much of a difference between any of them and they have all lasted till about 80K km. So I would just suggest to choose the one with the best deal. But if you intend to do offroading with them, I would suggest you as well to look at Yokohama ATS. There might be a slight decrease in mileage compared to the HT but it will help you to reduce the tire pressure upto 10 psi while doing some serious offroading.

Just a point on Google Earth problem for Oman @ebotha99, I tried Waze last year in Oman and it worked like a dream. Gives turn by turn directions, identifies potential road cameras in case you want to speed up in the middle of the long drives. It helped me find Yeti / Safa beach on the Qurm / Muscat coast which for some reason I was finding really hard to get to through Google Maps.

Guessing.. The car in front slowed down and you took your foot off the accelerator, losing momentum and then stuck. Hmm.. the car in front looks like a Pathfinder.

About two months back I switched to Kumho Roadventure ATS for my Pajero 3.8. So far it has been good for both on and offroad.

If you manage to drive 60,000 km a year, you can probably go ahead with a late 2017 production date Tyre. Else, its better to get at least an early 2018 tyre

One more point, if you are driving the 3.8 version the smallest rim size that would fit is the 17 inch rim die to the larger front disc brakes

For offroading the smaller the rim with bigger tyre wall, it will be better as when you deflate you get a longer contact point than with a bigger rim. So that results in better flotation. So a 15 inch will be better than a 16 inch rim and a 16 inch rim will b better than a 17 inch rim and so on The most common rim for offroading is 16 inch as they are easily available in comparison to a 15 inch rim. Regarding the point of ground clearance after Tyre deflation, there will be a half inch difference between a 16 inch vs 15 inch rim. But the longer contact point will offset that slightly better ground clearance. P.S. If you are driving a Pajero you should forget about cornering at high speeds. Then you have just bought the wrong car

Trip report from a Fewbie prospective. We had 2 weeks of starting the drive with rain in the air. Last week was starting the drive in thick fog. This week was different, cloudy but hot. Thank goodness for @shadow79 nice work with the AC kept me cool. I found Friday prayers in the new mosque near Al Awir and headed to the meeting point. As there were no absolute newbies we had a quick brief from @Gaurav bhai and we were off to the deflation point. After deflation we were divided into 2 groups, newbie and Fewbie level. @Gaurav bhai headed the newbie group with @Srikumar in the sweep, I headed the Fewbie group with @Emmanuel in the sweep. The newbie group also had @Maxiben, @razeen hasan, @AKR, @Sharme and @Chirag S., my group had @Brette, @yogic72 and @Fuad. As decided 10 minutes after the newbie convoy starting we took off on the right side through some technical dunes with some really soft patches. After having 3 difficult stucks taking over an hour to clear we found an amazing stretch which got us close to the newbie convoy in about 20 minutes. Those 20 minutes were the best 20 minutes I had in a long time. Fast paced and zero stucks in those 20 minutes. But like everything comes to an end, we got a few refusals, but still managed to make it to Pink Rocks and meet up with the newbie gang within a few minutes of them reaching. After saying goodbye to @yogic72 we combined the group to cross Pink Rocks to find a point to settle the crowd for a BBQ. Thanks to @Sharme, 3 of us @Maxiben, @razeen hasan and I were able to witness the flying capabilities of the Wrangler. This came with a sigh of relief from @razeen hasan who had just taken his vehicle of the track to the side. Thank goodness for our brief where we emphasize how important it is to wait in a safe place away from the track, and putting it into good practice. With some heating issues with the Wrangler @Gaurav bhai had to drop @Sharme to the road side. We later continued our quest and came across a nice spot to settle down. With a couple of BBQs going on and stories and jokes flying while some of us had to leave early. The night finally came to an end, thanks to @Emmanuel for guiding us out. After inflation and some warm hugs goodnight we all headed back home with some wide smiles all around. Rather I would say Im much more nervous than excited. As I said earlier I have not even tried desert safari in my life. Never ever felt how a vehicle cruises on sand especially dry sand. But one thing is for sure. I'm more relaxed as I feel I will be safe hands. 😎

@syedyaseer much appreciate your enthusiasm and excitement, but the trick is to keep calm. Collectively as a club experience we have 100 years between us, but we still get stuck. It's part of the game, no fun without stucks. So only pressure is how to get stuck and not the other way around. If you don't get stuck, no Aloo Parathas for you.

Don’t increase tyre width. It’s a recipe for disaster. Popouts will be there if you go off-road. With the same OEM rims I meant of course

If you're going on mountains and rocks better to get ATS. End 2018 OK, 2017 will last lesser as rubber becomes hard and cracks.

I'll be visiting the workshop on my next due inspection and get them to inspect the full suspension setup. I heard some but not all Pajero's had some issues with this. But in any case this car is not made to corner perfectly. Stick with your 18's if they came with the car and look for a good tyre when due for replacement. Many people including me swear with the Yokohama Geolander AT-S here and they perform very good offroad and decent onroad with not too much road noise.

Signal Aout 42, and Neon Judgement are good Belgian alternativea if you're into Front242. I love the weird stuff like Fad Gadget, Virgin Prunes, PIL, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus, Au Pairs, DAF, TC Matic, Telex, The Human League, Cabaret Voltaire, and many others.

@syedyaseer I'm using to Kumho Solus KL21 on my Mitsubishi Pajeo. These are very quiet even after 60k kilometers and still have thread left on them for maybe another 20k kilometers. I have hardly used them off road twice for only a little bit during 2 of our new year drives so can't comment much. But they managed well without deflation even in really soft sand and I'm happy with their performance. I will be posting a user review for them shortly.

ATS are better for offroad, HT stands for highway tread means it will be quite on road but not advisable for regular offroad use due to straight tread pattern and softer (probably 4 ply) side wall than the 6 or 8 ply for offroad tires.

@Sharme you can post your question on a new thread in the Jeep Wrangler section and technical gurus can help you out. As per my limited knowledge the temp gauge did not go up, which means your engine is not heating. Hot oil light if I'm not mistaken is for the gear oil. Since the weather is getting hotter I would recommend to put in a transmission oil cooler which is an extra fan to keep the gear oil cool. I have to say, reading so much details and researching on my own as well on tyre care, I'm probably lucky my Toyo U/T tires lasted as long as they did (about 60k km, tho started making noises after 50k) as I'm a n00b on tyre care. I have a feeling no service company had rotated my tires. Although I'm not a major off roader, I do like to go off roading once in a month or two. Have taken my car to Liwa, Maleha, Sweihan, the desert on the way to Al Ain (Sweihan again maybe?), drove to Salalah and back with lots of off roading, Jebel Shams cross-mountain driving searching for wadis, Wadi Arbayeen, Musandam mountains, Wadi Shawka etc. So maybe i'm really lucky my current tyres lasted this long, tho last weekend's Musandam off roading was probably too much for them as one got punctured :D This time, I definitely want to buy the right tires and thank great carnity members for such helpful comments! My mind is tilting towards Yokohama Geolandar. Just need to decide between H/T and ATS. If I could get some specific advice on H/T vs ATS, would love it. Once again, thanks all! what a day!!!. very positive. for me it really proved how important it is to listen to the briefings before the stay of every adventure. thanks to the briefing by @Gaurav @Rahimdad else i would have had a real serious mishap. as usual. the day started with a drive from home. this time i think its the enthusiasm that helped me arrive much earlier. started the day with a lot of smiles and great hugs. hatsoff to @Gaurav parents. they were i presume the senior most and the most adventurous couple we had. may god bless then with a very long and healthy life. thanks to @Rahimdad @Gaurav @Srikumar for all the efforts. thanks for the recovery when my grand lady sank. it was very caring of the trio and their efforts were amazing like always. thanks to @Chirag S. and @Fuad for waiting up until i inflated my tires. didnt even get to say a proper good bye, but see you guys the next time. every week we learn a lot of experience and paitence. the fear factor reduced a little more as the confidence factor had started to build along. it was a fun day and managed to learn the art of steering the steering. small slides n drifts happened. rollophobia and toppleophobia was there at times. 2 refusals and 1 sand bog. what more can you ask for when you had wonderful group leaders and a very cooperative co offroaders. Without a proper lift bigger tire size will also cause rubbing issues which lead to other damages in the long run. My advise is to first try out your current setup and try to make the educated changes as needed.

@Sharme you are most welcome. @Rahimdad and @Gaurav taught me how to be patient when I started offroading, so that credit definitely goes to them. Regarding your vehicle, since you are not sure of what all has been serviced by the previous owner, I suggest the following as a minimum to be checked or replaced 1. Transmission Oil and Filter - Change with the right grade of oil as per your owner's manual. 2. Air Filter - Check and if required change 3. Spark Plugs - Change 4. 4x4 Transfer Case - I am not sure if your car is a mechanical linkage system from below or is it a closed box. Since you had serious difficulty in changing it from 4L to 4H, I suggest you get it checked. 5. Engine Oil and Filter to be changed every 5000 km with the right grade of oil. The reason I have said 5000 km is because you are offroading.

Thanks @Frederic for that reply. IF in changing im going to 17 and a wider taller tire to stay at the same rolling offset but it will affect onroad handling i think. And i have the same issue cornering a 40 ton truck is a good comparison, i thinks it "built on" to it im afraid we came from the same car also a 3 series BMW and before that a lowered Corolla T-sport that cornered like it was on rails. so its habit i think...

I've always been impressed by people that use different tyres for off-roading cuz i always thought this must be such a drag in terms of planning and time commitment. So have to pass on my respects 😀

Noise and fuel saving in Geolander's are minimal and not too extreme, unlike other aggressive tread pattern tires. @syedyaseer I have never used Kumho.

I did check fuel efficiency for Yokohama Geolandar H/T and apparently it does enable lesser road resistance so I'm assuming that should be good. Can I assume ATS would not be fuel efficient due to overall aggressive tread pattern which I'm guessing would cause more road resistance? However, as long as difference in minimal it shouldn't be a big concern for me. Pajero is anyway noisier than other SUVs so I guess I can deal with minimal noise of the ATS as long as it doesn't become this god awful vibration noise that's making me go mad with my worn out Toyo U/T tires haha.

@Rahimdad Sir Im innnnnnnnn for the drive Insha Allah. Until something turns out against my way (God Forbids) As i mentioned earlier too i will come with bare stock vehicle as i have no accessories required for the drive. please accommodate and guide accordingly.

Yokohama Geolanders ATS are quite on road and capable off road. I'm not sure about Bridgestone, but BF Goodrich are heavier. Yokos are made in Japan, and worth their price point. @Gaurav bhai who has switched his tires several times after loads of research has changed his Yokos for the second time which speaks loads for them.

I was a pro Nitto Duragrappler user, but recently converted to Yokohama Geolanders ATS and am convinced it is best for both on road and off road use. Got it done from Future tires, they have a business listing on Carnity and offer great service at reasonable price.

General grabber are currently on the new Pajero but the nexen RO-HTX RH5 is getting great reviews and is very reasonably priced here. The previous owner of my car has Michelin put on, and they're an excellent highway tyre but expensive. Did you use pitstop Arabia to search for prices?
