Just like any other sport or hobby, off road driving too has it's own etiquette's. Often times these are not spoken out loud or mentioned in public to not to embarrass anyone. If you like to continue off road driving, you should know these basic offroad driving etiquette's and follow them. Pay 100% undivided attention to the instructions: Whether it's in briefing or on radio communication while recovering, give your 100% attention and if you cannot due to some incoming call or passenger distraction, ask them to repeat. Most of the instructions are given so that you can drive safely. If you still live in the mobile world or loud music or radio volume turned down, you will miss out on critical safety instruction that can end up breaking your 4x4 or bones, seriously. Follow the instruction PRECISELY: From as simple as deflate to 12-14 PSI, drive in HI gear, engage to LO as soon as you get stuck. These instructions have been given to YOU for YOUR safety and enhancing your offroad driving experience. If you deflate to 22 PSI instead of 12, you will have endless refusals, stucks and A/T Transmission & Engine will soon overheat. If you don't engage on LO as soon as you get stuck, you will lose the most critical surface area in which LO gear could have saved the day, rather than toiling in HI gear for first few minutes and making the stuck even more worst for your car. Acknowledge the message: Always acknowledge the radio messages as the reliability of radio communication is highly questionable. Step out and help: When you are stuck and someone is helping you, it's a BASIC MANNER to step out of your car and help the Marshal or senior member who is helping you. You can help them clearing the sand, fixing the rope or inspect the stuck or plan of recovery. Sitting inside a stuck vehicle and waiting is the worst and most offending thing to do. If someone is helping you to check tire pressure, then step out and observe, how to delate to precise PSI. Disclaimer: In some 1% tricky angles or situation, if you have a doubt or difficulty to come out, ask the Marshal or senior member: If its safe for you to step out? Please don't assume and sit inside. Observe and learn: Every stuck and recovery has a lot to teach. Observe and learn from your stucks and discuss with Marshals how to not to get stuck again in a similar way. If you don't observe and learn you will end up doing the same mistakes over and over again. Learn Vs Serve: All the knowledge and experience are there to help you learn offroading and not just to serve you. So that as soon as you learn, you start practising it and become more capable offroader and be able to help others in the future.

Driving off-road is a very interesting and entertaining experience but there are a few basic things you need to check first before heading for your first off-road drive with Carnity Off-road Club. Every driver should know when to join for an offroad drive and when to pass until all below things are checked. VEHICLE Ground clearance: Minimum 8 inches under front and rear bumper is must. You will need to be careful while driving and slow down while descent and approach to avoid any minor bumper damage. If your 4x4 have EAS (electronic suspension), lift it to the max height and then measure it. Also read the manual to know what is the max speed you can drive with off-road height, as many manufacturer limit up to 60 Kmph with off-road height, which is plenty in most cases. Knowing that limit is better in case you go above that speed, so you can lift it again once you slow down. Tow hook: Your 4x4 should have at least 1 tow hook in the front and 1 tow hook at the back, more the better. Also you should check the integrity of all tow hooks and its appearance, if they are shaking or rusted or missing a bolt, then get them fixed before joining any off-road drive. Engine: Your engine should be in perfect working condition without any check engine light or any warning lights on dashboard or leaking oil or coolant. Engine takes more stress while off-roading so well serviced 4x4 performs better on off-road. If you recently bought the car and have no idea of last service, then it's highly advisable to get the engine service before your first off-road drive. Gear / Transmission: Your 4x4 should have 4L and 4H gearing option. AWD or SUV without LO/HI gearing option are not advisable for sand off-roading. Suspension: Your 4x4 vehicle suspension should be in reasonable and drivable condition. You can drive with stock suspension perfectly fine and then you can decide to modify it, if really needed. Any suspension lifted up to 2-3 inches are accepted, anything above 3 inches lift need trip leader approval before joining any drive to make sure if you have widened the wheelbase to lower the center of gravity in an orderly manner. Tires: Your 4x4 tires should be in good condition with enough tread and more than half life left. Tires nearing their end usually fail while off-roading, so check for date of manufacturing shouldn't be more than 3-4 years. No visible cuts or lost tread chunks or cracking sidewall should be there. Fuel Tank: You should always join the off-road drive with full fuel tank, as all vehicles consume double or triple the amount of fuel while off-roading. You don't need to change the fuel type from special to super for off-road purpose, continue with your fuel type as per manufacturers recommendation. Sign up: Once you have checked all these above points then RSVP the drive calendar and post an introductory message on the drive post - sharing your 4x4 details, previous off-road experience (if any), so that trip lead can acknowledge and plan the drive accordingly. OFF-ROAD GEAR You don't need any off-road gear or recovery gears for your first off-road drive, but if you have a shovel, flag and a radio (walkie talkie) then please carry it with you. Carry hat/cap/scarf, in case you need to spend long time under the sun. Carry plenty of water and soft drinks of your choice to keep you hydrated. Carry your camera mounts if you like to record the drive (no hand held). No carrying or consumption of any type of alcoholic drinks on the drive.

Let's see who has the most adventurous car plan (change, upgrade, mod, rebuild etc) in 2020? I have just finished my engine rebuild and currently doing first 1K break-in at the start of the new year. Hope everything goes downhill from here on, as I have been through rough patch since last few months - car luck = no luck/bad luck.

Could just be a dealer mod special edition. Many do that, just add a few stickers and stripes, badges, maybe a few extras like leather seats and stuff call it limited or special edition and charge extra. Most of the Toyota stuff here is like that. Since there is no info online save for the Dubai motorshow makes me believe it's a habtoor special with an ARB bumper and some tyres. Wouldn't pay more than 25 for it

Sure worth digging in more with Habtoor and see what's underneath specs and protection it has (if any). Also ask your friend or habtoor what was the selling price when new, so that you can get fair depreciation value to decide than just emotional or sentimental figure. SWB + 3.8 is always rare and pricey, but my major turn off is the black color (unless you really love it). Black is difficult to keep it clean, minor scratches shout out loud, stay hot in summer and have worst resale value in UAE.

Hi Gaurav, it is the 3.8 engine. No modifications as it came like this from the manufacturer. Planning on asking al habtoor if they know anything and i will certainly update you. the car has 89000 km and the price is 45000. Bit pricey i know as i can find similar for a lot less. Hard to get the SWB though. the reason i asked is that if it a special edition then it might be worth buying. If its a scam i would rather spend less and modify with the help and knowledge of you guys and the amazing forum. thanks a lot! Vic

Hi Srikumar ive got a new GMC Sierra AT4 it certainly has front recovery but will check rear. I believe ground clearance is 10.8inches at lowest. no I don’t have any previous experience of off road driving Is this suitable ? regards edward

I think GCC only had 5 cyl model in H3. 2005 -2005 - 3.5 liter - 220 hp 2007 -2010 - 3.7 liter - 240 hp Both are capable offroaders with good offroad stance, clearance and reasonable power/weight ratio. If he has offroad package then he will also have underbody protection with front and rear diff even.

Water wading depth of 4x4 is not the good enough number to justify anyone's desire to splash the rain water puddle. Secondly water wading through wadi or river is totally different than through the big rain puddles, that has tons of contamination from road and debris. You really cannot see what's under that rain water and you might step on broken car part or a log of wood. Water entering the air intake is not the only danger to your vehicle. A vehicle's rated water wading depth takes into account electrical, mechanical and electronic components that might be damaged in a water crossing, as well as how well sealed the car cabin is from water intrusion. However, all these numbers are great when your car was brand new, but taking those water wading big numbers on 5-10-20 years of used vehicle is not a sensible idea. Every 4x4 manual has a list of things to check and change after the serious water wading. And yes @Per A I think your choice of 300-400 mm (at max) is plenty. Going beyond that you might need to check following things. All differential oil might get water through the breather pipe. Brake disc might get crack if they were too hot before entering the water. Airbag might pop as their sensors are usually placed under the bumper. If radiator fan hit the water it will splash everywhere in the engine bay. All electronics might fail if battery goes down while car is still moving. If you can't avoid driving during the heavy rain, take these precautions: Avoid heavily flooded roads. Slow down through rain puddles. Check with your insurance if flood damage is covered. Park your car on high ground as much as possible during the heavy rain. 4x4 and SUV are better than sedan or sports car, as their air filter intake is fairly down. If more than 1 cup of water goes inside the engine through air intake it can instantly seize your car engine due to hydrostatic lock. A Hydrostatic Lock is basically a condition when the engine of your vehicle gets locked due to water seeping in. This results in your car not starting or stalling when you are moving. A hydrostatic lock happens when your vehicle is moving through a flooded area or is parked in any area prone to floods. What to do with flooded cars?

Just like @Frederic mentioned, i have always wanted to get a teeny tiny car for the shorter trips and I really want to get a Tida as I feel it fits the bill. Besides that, I would like to go for better suspensions (adjustable ones to be precise), a cold air intake and get chip tuning done. This is the plan but my wallet is sadly not on board with my plans 😬 #keepdreaming

Buying an additional smaller 4 cylinder car to save a bit on petrol. Both my Pajeros drink more than a Russian sailor. With my stupid passion for cars that removes common sense thinking that car won’t be a Tida or Yaris which would evidentially be the best option. Lets see what 2020 brings...

@Barry seems like you are a free car magnet in this sweet world. Mine was Nissan Sunny 1996 model as my first car in 2002 in Dubai. Done few impulsive minor accidents, road rage, blown head gasket, faded roof, tried all ghetto mods and cheap fixes to learn my lesson - HARD WAY. I can't remember actual value but it was within 5-10k AED. Sold it to my friend after engine rebuild and told him not to redline it again. My wife still teases me that I was a Shumacher on every red light with faded roof sunny.
