    I agree with Sri, but gearing issue is there in some cars only and it becomes known issue after a while that you can search and eliminate those specific models. Power/Weight and Wikipedia knowledgebase is king in researching your next offroad ride.

    Real off-roader to consider in any budget (lower the year for affordability) Listed as per the priority - (From excellent - good): X-Terra, FJ Cruiser, SWB Land Cruiser, SWB patrol from 2012 onwards SWB Prado V6, SWB Pajero 3.8 (both require a bit of front and back underbody protection) LC100 (till 2008), Patrol VTEC (till 2008) Lesser the weight and electricry options the better it is for the desert.

    Don't shoot me guys for saying this as I don't know whether WD40 is an approved belt dressing or not. I have tried WD40 to identify which one out of 3 belts is squeaking in my Pajero multiple times. It just that it creates a dalmatian spots mess in the engine bay, so now I put a big towel around and secure it properly before I spray WD40. TBH it seems this noise is because engine oil is low or what Saleem pointed that there may be some metal shaving, and some internal engine component is not happy.

    Sorry Sertac, don't even think of that route knowing because it's 1.3 liter and secondly after your 4.0 Jeep Cherokee. I agree Jimny's are good in the desert, but they are just borderline good when you see what they can do with a 1.3-liter engine (comparative review based on a dinky engine). I had a chance to recover one Jimny from a deep bowl by circling technique, but that thing never gained momentum in cross track area that in end I come close to the edge and we joined 5 tow ropes to drag that Jimny uphill. Barry, what you see is DEFINITELY not the case in UAE Desert. I fall for 2 door SWB Nissan Patrol that couldn't climb half of big red, faya and pink rock. People here plonk Denali or LS engines under the different skin to make it look understated and win races for real money. Barry I love to read when someone talking hp/ton (power-weight ratio) my favorite golden rule to give thumbs up for any desert ride, this is my opinion based on my desert experience and frustration from so many labelled - king of the desert imposters: 60-80 hp/ton - Acceptable 80-100 hp/ton - Good 100-120 hp/ton - Very Good 120-140 hp/ton - Excellent 140-200 hp/ton - Rally or motorsport level 200 hp/ton above - Hill climb competition level

    If it's really a specific area wind noise bothering you then debug that area first as many times your mind doesn't read the exact source of the problem. My car recently involved in an accident where the garage has to change the door, after getting my car I was complaining about wind noise from that door. After 6-7 attempts, we figured out that half sliding window behind the driver was not locking properly due to debris and once clean and locked the window in its latch sound gone. Secondly, Pajero has a hole in passenger footwell that opens in the engine bay (firewall) and I have been sick of hearing my engine roaring and humming inside the cabin. I bought 10 GBP sound insulation sheet and just placed 1 on top of that hole and sound reduce by 75%. I still have 1 sheet to spare if you like to experiment PM me. Thirdly to actually debug the correct source of wind or engine noise, ask someone else to drive and then you follow the sound while on the passenger seat or back seat to actually trace the correct issue, while on the driving seat you will keep guessing and getting frustrated. Fourth, some tires DO MAKE LOT OF NOISE, google your tire decibel level rating to find out if its coming due to those. General noise type for you to figure out: Tires - constant humming and then deafening at high speed Wind noise - sharp whistling or gushing, link to speed Engine noise - roaring, but linked to engine rpm than the speed

    Exhaust leaks sound more like a whistle or phish phish noise or doof doof noise, than this sharp metal ticking noise.

    Is it turbo car? As adding oil after few kms is normal in a turbo but not in NA engine, that means there is some oil is leaking

    Check the engine oil level, if its too low oil is not lubricating the top of the head where usually lifters are and those lifters when run dry make ticking noise. This is my educated guess, without knowing if Merc has lifters or not but checking engine oil level will help other professionals to advise accordingly.

    I don't agree @desertdude that its a rebadge thread. As gypsy and Jimmy are two different animals. Gypsy in India used and modified as king of off-road to go to some extreme high altitude places where modern 4x4 has failed. Some type of Indian LR defender on a small chassis.

    Very nice thread @Barry, really creative and thought-provoking topic. Mine is Maruti Gypsy, that is the king of off-road in India and not to be seen here in UAE completely.

    Thanks, @Barry I will post more pics once I get it serviced and clean from inside as it's from the private deal so need a bit of love. So far no plan atm, but you never know what I intend after few months as I get bored. I so wanna test its off-road capability considering 510 hp and 625 Nm torque on-board. How much hp can be up by pulley....? Thanks, @desertdude I have been eyeing 2012 - latest of the last shape since few years to once again enjoy the Range Rover experience but without beep beep beep this time (you know what I mean). Just that it took a bloody long time to search (3-4 months) for low mileage with full service history and no accidents but without insane dealer premium.

    Very misleading title my friend, or is it on purpose like newspapers do these days to get more clicks Whatever it was truly sad and the owner should be punished for driving the unsafe car around the city. With the age of Discovery Series II - 12 years old at least seems like a maintenance issue than a manufacturing defect to blame Land Rover.

    I have got my Pajero exhaust pipe upgrade 1.5 - 2.5 from Al Khawaneej in Sharjah and then added Magnaflow Muffler (low noise) and Borla cat back. The end result has a nice response, amazing noise, good highway drone and no loud doof doof. Cops never stopped me and in passing they have passed twice without a question or doubt. In my Mustang I had Magnaflow (hushflow) that also had a nice rumble and no much noise always passed without any trouble. RTA and Tasjeel main concern is certain decibel level (don't know exact numbers), as I rem seeing 5-6 passing guys hovering next to my Mustang in both attempt and one guy hit the gas and then after 10 secs all go away saying - yeah yeah this is fine.
