  2. I’ve seen those. I actually have the plans here to build an interface to connect to the laptop, they’re very simple. I’d like something multimeter sized with a scope function that I can carry around but I don’t want to spend the price of a Fluke and I don’t know how the cheaper ones are.
  3. I need a scope. However, I don’t want to pay for a full price lab scope. I’ve seen some of the handheld ones. Does anyone have any experience with them? Basically what I need is a tool to monitor AC waveforms and current fluctuations.
  4. Shoveling builds character
  5. I am by no means an expert. I’ve messed about with RC stuff in the past but I’ve never got too deep into it, just a basic working knowledge. A well maintained battery on a mid-high end car should give you at the minimum 30 minutes play time. Charging time can be 1 hour or it can be 8 hours. It just depends on the battery capacity. Batteries are removable so it’s always a good idea to have a spare or 2. The nitros are the noisy smokey ones. They’re little 2 stroke engines. Nitro fuel is a blend of methanol, nitromethane and lubricants. Because it is a 2 stroke engine and has no oil sump, the lubricants in the fuel protect the moving parts and this lubricant is what creates the smoke.
  6. http://m.gulfnews.com/news/uae/transport/uae-man-gets-dh1-million-in-radar-fines-1.2108030 Some of the fines here a laughably small. I guess sometimes the only answer is to empty their bank account.
  7. Recommend pressure should be on a sticker inside the door or on the back of the petrol flap. Higher pressure will give better fuel mileage. Pump it up to around 60psi and you can do burnouts easy 😬
  8. Sorry, I forgot to post the link 🙄 http://uae.souq.com/ae-en/traxxas-76044-1-latrax-sst-4wd-truck-1-18-rtr-10523702/i/?a_source=google&a_medium=cpc&a_content=search_shopping&u_type=shopping&a_campaign=Shopping-UAE-EN-Global&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI8t2NruL51gIVCjgbCh3KCwrxEAQYASABEgIp0_D_BwE
  9. Try something like this 625 dhs to get you started. It’s RTR (ready to run) which means what it says, it’s ready to run, meaning built. All you have to do is charge the batteries and go. If you want to get into Nitro powered stuff, it starts around 3-4K dhs. It’s a lot more fun but requires a bit of technical knowledge to keep them running. When you have a bit of experience you can start buying components and modify your own or buy a chassis and start building. Id recommend starting out with traxxas stuff. It’s good quality.

I've worked on continental before. They're basically a reshelled VW Phaeton, same W12 engine. Very simple engine to work on once you know your way around it. It's more or less 2 VW VR6 engines stuck together with twin ECUs, one for each side. Many parts are interchangeable with VW so parts are available and not as expensive as you would think. Things to look out for, Electrics. This car has a LOT of electrics. Test every knob and switch, windows, roof, everything. Coil packs. There was a bad batch of VW coil packs out for a while. Most should have been replaced by now but it's worth checking. Bad coil packs will cause stuttering under load so try some heavy acceleration and make sure it pulls well through all the gears. Keyless entry system can give problems so make sure the car locks and unlocks automatically. If it doesn't work it's either a faulty antenna (cheap) or needs new transistors soldered into the control board (very cheap). Listen for knocking sounds from the front end. Drop links can wear out fast but they aren't expensive or difficult to replace. There is a vacuum hose at the back of the engine that breaks. With the engine running, gently pull on the vacuum pipes at the back of the engine and listen for hissing sounds. If this pipe is broken, the engine has to come out to repair it. All in all, they are a nice, luxurious, comfortable touring car. Just make sure you get a good one and get a good mechanic who knows about them.
  11. Here’s one for the Christians among us, Ministry - Jesus built my hotrod. This song is the very definition of the industrial genre
  12. What bands or songs can you think of that relate to cars? I was listening to a band earlier called the Daihatsu Hijets. I had a daihatsu hijet for a while. It was a heap of scrap. I sold my Kawasaki GPZ to a guy who thought he would be a smartass and try to scam me on the magnesium wheels. I talked him into buying the Hijet as well and scammed him back and got the full value. If I had to put the daihatsu hijets in a genre I'd say they are stoner rock. Couldn't find them on YouTube but here are a few other songs to start the thread, Fear Factory - Cars (originally a Gary Numan song, but I prefer fear factory) Status Quo - Don't drive my car. I'm going to see this band in Dubai opera in 2 weeks and I can't wait. Metallica - Fuel. Probably the best post NWOBHM band ever. Exodus - Lowrider. Again a cover, originally by War but the metal loving teenager inside me likes Exodus. Iggy Pop - The passenger. Listen to the chords, it's the exact same song as save tonight by eagle eye cherry. It freaked me out when I started learning guitar. Canned Heat - On the road again. Reminds me of smoking something at home, this is uae so censorship so I can't say but you know 😂
  13. Well you have the 3.0 i6, the 3.0 i6 turbo, the 4.0 and the 4.3 V8 so if you want something efficient and cheap to run, this isn't the car for you. If you want comfort, luxury and build quality, by all means, go for it.
  14. I'm not really bothered if I get likes or not. In fact, I've dropped half a star lol. I give advice where I can, if someone learns something or they can save a few dirhams, I know the karma will come back to me at some point. When the 1 like = 1 dirham was in place I would have been more concerned. To be honest, that was one of the biggest motivating factors when I signed up initially. I wasn't working at the time and the extra money for beer was handy. Now it's gone so meh, I just stay because I rarely get the chance to chat with like minded people in the real world. Even when I was working in a garage, the mechanics never really seemed to have any interest in cars other than fixing them so Carnity was a breath of fresh air.
  15. Hi Mike, welcome to Carnity 👋🏻 Which engine do you have in your A5? I'm guessing it's the CR 170? I was thinking you couldn't be in UAE because I haven't seen a single diesel Audi since I got here then I noticed you're in Romania.
  16. While you might not need to change the petrol filter often due to blockages, it's best to change it every 50-60k due to degradation which will decrease fuel flow. On older vehicles with metal tanks, it should be changed more often. The tanks corrode internally and small flakes of rust can cause a lot of damage if they were to get to the injectors or carburetor. The gauze in the fuel pump will catch most of the larger stuff but some small pieces can get through. Diesels are a different story and the fuel filter is generally a service item to be changed along with the oil filter. Especially in modern common rail systems with high pressure pumps, the smallest particle can wreck a pump causing a huge repair bill.
  17. Traxxas are probably the best ready to run rc nitro cars in the world.
  18. Friendly, approachable leadership ready and willing to share and teach the most basic stuff to new members over and over again.
  19. You're very welcome. Helps to have a good mechanic on the job too @shadow79 😉
  20. Money no object, build it yourself. 1:16 Traxxas rally chassis and a shell from Killer Body.
  21. Pre detonation is when the fuel ignites from the compression in the engine before the spark plug fires. Like a diesel, kind of. Performance engines tend to have higher compression and are more susceptible to pre det so need a higher octane rating. Turbo engines also. Always good to use the fuel recommended by the manufacturer but a general rule of thumb is that an octane rating over 95 is for sports and turbocharged cars. By sports cars I mean Ferraris and stuff, not GT86s or Miatas. It’s just a waste of money buying expensive fuel when you don’t need it.
  22. Not a problem chum. It’s stuck with araldite, the strongest element known to man.
