  1. looks like im also in the same boat.

im also looking for dedicated solid off roader so i guess xterra off road version is the one to go. But even for 2009-10 Xterra off road version vs basic price difference is about 8-10K

so my question is it possible to modify basic xterra to off road version. if yes how much it would cost and pros and cons.

what i'm want additional to basic option is cruise control and rear difflock.

  2. It was excellent lead today by @Ale Vallecchi. The drive was very interesting with plenty of dunes to play along. It was my first time driving from faqa to solar park, looks like I’m already in love with this area.

Big thanks to our seniors @Srikumar and @Vanessa8580 for helping all of us in multiple stuck  and refusals.

Unfortunately white smoke was a concern, Will Try to get it sorted tomorrow itself.

Hope to see you all soon next time.

    Stay safe!!

  3. Hi @desertdude Thank you for detailed explanation. unfortunately i'm not technical enough tackle the fuel pressure issue as you mentioned. But do you think there is fuel pressure issue since i was able rev up to the max in 4L. i was loosing power only in 4H.  also i recently changed gear oil and filter do you think that can have a link to above problem.

good to know about the issues you mentioned. so i can mentioned it to mechanic when i visit next time.

@Rizwanm2 that is why we recommend that 4L is for recoveries only or in some cases for steep long decline. You are not supposed to drive in 4L. I don't think Cruise Control would be effected by loss of power as that is something to do with vacuum if I'm not mistaken. Seems like you mechanic is just trying to play some roulette with you. Have you consulted with another garage to pin point the problem and solution. Just changing parts randomly is not going to help your situation.

hi @Rahimdad im not sure what these mechanics were up to. if possible can you recommend any workshop in sharjah to get it fixed or for a second opinion.

    Thank you.

Just a question: did you have to replace the timing belt or did they have to put it back on after your last repair on the pulley ? I am suspecting your timing is off after seeing your car’s power yesterday.

hI @Frederic mechanic didn't remove the timing belt. only drive belt and pulley was removed.  also head gasket was changed due to small oil leak, new spark plugs, Engine oil and filter, gear oil an filter.

yes as you said i was struggling for power yesterday. i used to climb pink rock in 4H without any problem. but yesterday i was not able to climb even small dune i think at least 20% of pink rocks incline. but when i switch to 4L the engine was able to rev up. then i noticed if i drive bit longer in 4L engine is overheating. i had lot of refusal yesterday due to this loss of power issue.

Any idea what is wrong here

also i noticed yesterday my cruise control is not working. could this also linked to any of the above issues.

  6. Thanks guys i just want to put it out there out of my curiosity.

hi @Wrangeld all valid points. i didn't meant that maxtrax is an alternative for rope. i just mentioned it to show the price comparison.

@sertac agree the recovery situation in both video are not common in the desert. Also it is not ideal for recovery of crested situations.

Thanks @Rahimdad for letting us know its tested and proven not much useful in the desert.

i understand maxtrax is not ideal for crested situation or soft sand. but what about a stuck in a ditch or bottom of a bowl.

Maxtrax is something I see regularly in most of the off-road videos posted in youtube. Looks like its great tool for off-road recoveries, specially in sand. But I didn’t see this tool widely accepted in carnity off-road club.  Looking for our members opinion.

As per below videos even a knockoff maxtrax work fine and I found some in amazon for about 500 dhs.  Which is almost the same price as set of recovery rope set.

Glad to hear you got it sorted. Your Nativa stems just like my little blue from a nineties-hassle-free-style-technical approach. They are easy to fix, and parts can be found in many places.

You might want to consider getting an alternator from the scrapyard in Sharjah. 3500 is indeed a hefty amount.

yes @Frederic i will look for used one and get it fixed later.

cant wait to see you guys on friday..

  9. update -

After 2 months wait I could not hold it anymore, watching everyone enjoying the off road drives. long wait was due to the pandemic I was reluctant to let anyone wander in and out of my car. 😷

Anyway got it fixed last weekend and culprit was warn out pulley and alternator. Nothing major inside the engine. Changed 2 pullies and belt almost 75% noise is gone now. Still there is small grinding noise from the alternator, but as per the mechanic its not major thing to worry about. Anyway he will look for used one and I can get it fixed later. Apparently, quotation for new alternator was 3500 bucks 😬.

Along with this took care of some other maintenance stuff as well, radiator flush, Gear oil and filter changed, engine oil changed and spark plug changed. So now ready for rumble. 😀
