I am from Mars, but your thinking of saving planet Earth need more rational approach than blaming the companies for marketing their products. If that ever has to happen, then companies doing more harm to health by selling junk food, soda, cigarettes, alcohol would be banned and not the car companies. Marketing is existing since 1800 and it's the only way to sell their product by persuasive manner. Common wake up, you are just 200 years late to realize that it's wrong.

What so much fuss guys, don't you know that next big thing in automobile is electric cars.....? That's why almost all car manufacturers investing heavily in that future and now so many electric cars are available on roads - of course except MENA and ASIA region as we get everything in end For @treks do you know that Tesla and other electric cars have already reached 426 kms per charge, so where is the problem now and @Gaurav electric cars these days run 100 times crazy fast than petrol cars at it has instant power delivery but without the engine noise, lol. Be ready to dump your Mustang shortly. @Technician cowdung and other biogas is now thing of past and used in rural outskirts due to easy availability and not urban areas, I have barely seen a cow in UAE in last 5 years let alone the dung. I agree with your Solar and Wind energy use, that yes we should move more towards these alternatives as well as we have 360+ days of extra bright sunlight in UAE. @salmanahmed totally agree with you buddy that best way to educate people is with word of mouth and social these days as it connect with emotions faster than just sending emails and sms.

The most annoying thing ever is to see someone driving slowly on the fast lane like he owns the lane.. Derik said something about Educating people.. I say No, because this issue was raised many many many times all over UAE, whether through media radio channels, Tv, Rta or even through flyers at Dubai Police adding to all these the rants through social media networks! After all these Ads, driving on the left lane in a slower than the actual speed orr not giving a way means the person whose doing it is doing it on purpose.. 500$ for people in Indianna, 1000$ for the people in UAE because people here won't learn the lesson until it's a heavy nice cheesy bill..

Farting cows, that's another good source of energy. There's a monestary not too far from my home place and the monks have built a plant to harness the power of methane. As far as I'm aware, they use it to generate all their own electricity and also heating. I also seen a couple of plants in Germany where biogas is produced from waste corn husks and stalks and this biogas is then used to produce electricity for small villages.

Rational approach? When last did you see smog hanging over a city- smog caused by cars burning fossil fuels? Scam? Of course, cars are not the only cause of global warming, and there is some evidence to suggest that the large number of cows and sheep on Earth releasing methane into the atmosphere cause more damage than cars do. Doesn't mean that burning fossil fuels in cars don't contribute though. As for ethanol as fuel- there is simply not enough plant metrial on the planet to make enough ethanol to replace fossil fuel. Besides, the amount of energy required by burning fossil to make the enthanol being produced cause more damage to the atmosphere than the amount of emisions saved by using ethanol as fuel. Ergo, nothing is gained by using ethanol. I also agree that setting off nuclear bombs is a bad thing. You are right, the first internal combustion engines were designed to run on vegetable oil- until cheaper fossil fuels came along. It might be worth noting that even the best-made bio-diesel releases more nitrous oxide into the atmosphere than regular diesel does. Nitrous oxide is the substance in exhaust emissions that cause smog. As matters now stand, there simply is no viable large-scale replacement for fossil fuels, so the only way to reduce emissions is to burn less fuel, and using smaller cars is a sure-fire way of doing that. No matter anybody's point of view- there is no getting past the fact that burning less fuel causes less emissions, unless of course the Martians among us have found a beter way?

i have just read this post right now although i commented about this slow driving on my first post!! every day i see this battle between the slow lazy drivers and the opponent is somebody just want to move at normal reasonable speed or even he want to over speed limit that is his responsibility and own wright may be he is in emergency or needs to hurry up sure he shall not hit the front cars if the road is not clear or there is traffic jam so my advice to everyone like to slow down than the speed limit ok go to the 3rd or 4th lane from the left and enjoy driving without any tension caused by somebody pushing u from behind believe me all road users will be relaxed and no violation and all satisfied without more traffic laws.

I totally agree with you @derik. this has been a good post with so many thought provoking ideas and stats shared. Looking at all this, there is still hope for us ... the citizens of planet earth

This was an awesome read and best thread so far with so much word of wisdom shared from different perspectives. I never knew about alcohol / ethanol / vegetable oil / bio were used to run our dear engines.

This has to done here man, or atleast do some education and awareness that left lane is only for passing and not for driving. Worst is to drive and drive slow and impact all 4-6 roads in end.

WOW, where this Diesel power thread is marching to is an amazing characteristic of an online forums. lol. These forums are the bitches and that's why I avoid participating as much as I can resist. Treks made a good point of controlling the false advertising, but nobody is banning anyone. Ging cool off, you also have a valid point but stay away from such personal attack in public forums. It all start with suggestion and brainstorm and you shouldn't be so harsh in your framing your point of view.

Also to add, the original engine built by Rudolf Diesel was designed to run on vegetable oil. Who would have thought a few dragsters could have caused such a fuss? 😬

I think that blaming petrol & diesel engines for global warming is a big scam..... can you compare the results and consciousness for using engines (globally) for 20 years Vs. one nuclear or Hydrogen explosion experiment by any country? have you ever heard about that experiment oxygen burning evaluating? Moreover go back for history to the beginning of motors industry and you would find out that all petrol engines was designed basically to run on Alcohol (Ethanol) which is simply a renewable energy and available in some parts of the world as a bio-fuel (E65 & E85) and the most common fuel in Latin America and some how We All world wide was miss-leaded to Oil based fuels by oil companies wold wide before 100 years ago and we still following them! Sorry to disappoint you but truth is always shocking!!

Are you guys serious to rant on people choice and marketing team responsible for screwing the planet. Grow up guys. Nobody is putting gun on customers mind and forcing them to buy trucks or tiida. Pharmacy sells rat poison too, do you go and buy it and commit suicide and then blame pharmacy.....?

@Technician You are right about the production costs of hydrogen, but a bigger problem is the storage and distribution of hydrogen. The molecules of the gas are so small that they escape through the walls of normal storage tanks and pipes, almost like water through a sieve. In the few race cars that use hydrogen as fuel the tanks and pipes are so thick and heavy that these cars carry a significant weight penalty. But I agree- hydrogen could be the perfect fuel if the problems with producing, storing, and distributing it can be solved. Hydrogen fuel cells might work, but they still need a lot of development to make them a viable alternative to fossil fuels.

You meant this, buddy...? This is how chevy selling big trucks in here and white collar people going to office in this truck daily coz of brainwash from the marketing and media guys. I personally know 3 mid-senior level guys in my office coming in similar size trucks.

I think hydrogen is the way forward. It's probably the cleanest fuel we currently know, the only byproduct of combustion is pure H2O. However, the problem with hydrogen is that it takes a lot of electricity to produce and most our current electrical production is coming from fossil fuels so if you're burning dirty oil to produce clean hydrogen, you're just robbing Peter to pay Paul. This can be combatted by using more sustainable electricity generation methods such as wind, solar, water. I don't know why Dubai isn't using more solar power, there's no shortage of sun and no shortage of space in the desert to put solar panels. I was in Germany last year and they had fields full of the things. Tidal turbines are another trick were missing out on here, especially being right beside the sea.

@Gaurav makes an excellent point in that fast accelaration can be a safety feature, but you don't need a V8 to get good acceleration. There are many smaller cars with smaller engines that eat Mustangs alive, and they use less fuel doing so than the Mustang does by just trying to keep up. I submit that smaller cars with smaller engines can be just as much fun to drive as any Mustang or Corvette, but for all that, we have to admit that the planet is in real trouble. One Mustang may not contribute to the problem in any meaningful way, but the problem is that there are millions of Mustangs and Corvettes that do play a major part in global warming, as in fact, all internal combustion engines do. Developments in fuel efficiency and emission control can only go so far. In fact, some emission control devices like DPF filters on diesels wipe out most of the advantages of other emission control measures. The real solution to the problem of emissions requires the development of entirely new automotive technologies. One solution might be steam power, but a suitable heat source is a little problematic at this time. Somebody once sugested that small nuclear reactors might work, but the idea of hundreds of millions of nuclear reactors on the roads seems more of a nightmare than all of the billions of internal combustion engines in operation today can ever be. One day in the not-too-distant future the oil WILL run out, and with the poor performance and range of most electric cars, it seems that electricity is not a viable alternative. Any ideas on alternative power plants for cars of the future?

Brake torque is an important aspect of the physics of brake systems, and it must always be borne in mind when brakes are upgraded, or if you want to change to bigger wheels. The best way to explain brake torque is to compare a car wheel to a torque wrench. With a torque wrench, the amount of force required to torque a bolt is dependent on the lenght of the tool, since torque is defined as "Force Multiplied by Distance". If for instance you need to apply a force of say, 10 kg to a torque wrench that is say, 600 mm long to torque a bolt, but you lengthen the tool to 1200 mm, you will only need to apply a force of 5 kg to torque that same bolt to the same value. Similarly, if you make the tool only 300 mm long, you will need to apply a force of 20 kg to torque the bolt. Much the same thing happens with a car wheel. The distance from the center of the wheel to the point of contact with the road can be compared to the length of the torque wrench. The distance from the certer of the brake disc to its outside diameter can be compared to the force required to torque a bolt, but in this case, the torque works in reverse to stop the wheel. Nonetheles, the principle of "Force Multiplied by Distance" remains the same. "Force" as it applies to a rotating wheel is generated by the motion of the car (for our purposes, we will ignore the kinetic energy of the wheel) , and "Distance" is the relationship between the diameters of the wheel and the disc. The difference between the diameters of the wheel and the brake disc can be compared to the length of atorque wrench. Thus, the bigger the difference between the diameters of the wheel and brake disc, the more brake force is required to stop the wheel, since the effect is the same as making the torque wrench shorter, while "Force" remains the same. Fitting smaller wheels reduce the difference in diameter between the wheel and the brake disc, which is the same as making the torque wrench longer, which in turn reduces the brake force required to stop the wheel. Brake upgrades often involve fitting slighty larger discs, which has the same effect as changing (reducing) the wheel size. Therfore, upgrading brakes by fitting bigger discs only works if the wheel size remains the same, because if you fit bigger wheels at the same time, you lose the advantage of the bigger discs that reduce the difference in the relative diameters of the wheel and the disc.
