  1. I totally agree @ma7amad that barry's couple of opening sentences came out bit harsh, but I know him personally since long and I can guarantee that that's not what he meant to insult or belittle you or anyone on this forum. For the same, he has apologized it even, as sometimes written text lacks the emotions and feelings as if two guys are standing and debating in a workshop with a couple of rights and wrongs. It's just that same thing sounds too harsh on a public forum. You seem to be very knowledgeable as well, and I really suggest you take active participation so that we can all learn from your vast experience and knowledge and maybe you can learn something new from forums.

  2. Since its been about 2 weeks from the last desert drive, my mind was getting restless. Guess am completely infected by the desert bug, so after discussing with Gaurav, I though of posting a desert drive. idea is to meet up somewhere near Al Hayer and then drive to Nahel. From google maps it looks like an interesting terrain. I have not been to this area, so it would be great if someone can suggest a meeting point . Plan is as follows: When: 29 September 2017 Meeting time: 7:00 AM, convoy will move at 7:15 AM Where: First ADNOC Station while exiting from E66 onto E20 GPS Coordinate: https://goo.gl/maps/ncY7BeVTct12 Level of drive: Fewbie - Expert - Advance - (absolute newbie and newbie as passengers only) Type of Car: Any proper 4x4 with front and back tow hooks and 10 inches of ground clearance Plan: Early morning drive from Al Hayer to Nahel What to bring along: Morning breakfast - whatever you like with little extra to share, water, liquids, smiles, stories, and enthusiasm. Please RSVP on below calendar

  8. Apologies, it was not my intention to deliberately insult you. I was merely try to ascertain why you were posting incorrect information about the lubrication of cylinder walls when your profile designation states you are an engineer and an engineer should know these things. If you aren't sure about something, it's better to either ask questions or post nothing than to misinform people with incorrect information. I have never once claimed to be an engineer. I have never taken any engineering exams and I have never had any desire to do so, so a failed or fake engineer I have never been and will never be. I do not even have any technical qualifications as many members on this site know and I have never made a secret of it. I originally left school with qualifications in IT, Business and Languages. However, what I do have is 16+ years experience in all aspects of electrical and mechanical automotive repair, full ground up restoration rebuilds, race car builds and many hundreds of hours reading books and learning theory. Finally, I never enforce my opinion on anyone. If anyone doesn't like my opinion on anything, I don't care. But facts are one thing that should be reiterated over and over as many times as needed until people understand them. Forums are a free education service and it's a shame people don't see it that way or appreciate the fact that people go out of their way to try to teach them.

  9. Wrong again. Not every engine uses cylinder liners. In fact, the majority don't. See below the picture of a liner, again you can clearly see the cross hatchings inside. There are 2 compression rings on a piston, the primary and the secondary. They do not hold in 100% of compression efficiently as anyone who has ever done a compression test will tell you. This is why there are 2 compression rings. Because they are not efficient. What happens if you slide 2 pieces of metal together 5000 times a minute without lubricant? They will become extremely hot, wear down or more likely friction weld themselves together. So using basic logic, of course the cylinder wall inside the combustion chamber needs to be lubricated. Are you really an engineer? Because this is very basic fundamental stuff.

  10. What can I say? Late for my own trip and now late to come out with the trip report. Bad habits are very easy to fall in to and very difficult to get out of. To continue my heartfelt thanks to Gaurav Bhai, Basit Bhai and Saleem and their families for the patience. Reaching the top of Jabal Jais we saw a lot of changes and the number of people wanting to enjoy cooler weather on top, I had a chance to play a game with my family to guess what the weather would be on top. At the base of Jabal Jais the temperature was 39 degree, my guess was 34 degree, my sister in law was the winner with 31 degrees. That was a whole 8 degree cooler. that is amazing. Gaurav bhai's watch showed 24 degree when we finally left at 11 pm. I would like to thank Basit for helping me with the BBQ, mother's are a blessing and the masala she used to marinate the chicken for BBQ has always gained praise from everyone. Sohini bhabhi also got loads of vege-burgers which were delicious and filling. The best aspect of this outing was loads of time to relax and sit around to enjoy the weather and chat. I would like to thank 1 and all for the patience and an amazing time which my family thoroughly enjoyed.

  11. As the weather is getting better so we can restart our old fashion - early morning drives that leave the whole Friday on hand for family and friends. And what better place to do the newbie opening morning drive at Bidayer area to enjoy the sunrise on top of Big Red. When: 15 Sep 2017, Friday Meeting time: 5 AM, convoy will move sharp at 5:15 AM Where: Old Emarat Petrol Station at Lahbab R/A GPS Coordinate: https://goo.gl/maps/gQd1UszDdSG2 Level of drive: Absolute Newbie - Newbie - Fewbie - Expert - Advance - All are welcome Type of Car: Any proper 4x4 with front and back tow hooks and 10 inches of ground clearance Plan: Morning drive from Bidayer to Pink rock and enjoy the sunrise. 13. Wrong. If you look inside the cylinder, you will see scores on the wall. These are known as cross hatchings and put there deliberately by the manufacturer or engine builder during the honing process. The purpose of these is to retain a small amount of engine oil above the piston to lubricate the primary and secondary rings. If you don't have this small amount of oil on the cylinder walls, the piston rings can wear out or jam, which is something you see a lot of here through people with no proper training building engines. They stick new pistons and rings in without giving any attention to the cylinder wall. I have seen rebuilt engines fail after a couple of thousand kms and upon strip down, the walls were polished like mirrors. Bore wash is basically what the name says. The bore is washed of its lubricant. This can happen a few ways. I.e. If an injector becomes stuck open through mechanical or electrical fault, the mixture being too rich, or the use of fuel system cleaners. An unlubricated cylinder is bad news.

  14. It's a very good question and very well put, writing a lot of people similar confusion in words. I have advised plenty of my colleague on this exact issue. To start with, I have been driving for last 15 years in Dubai and 10 years in offroad. Best advice is to keep the separate car for offroad for the endless reasons, (too long to list here). However, if as a beginner you still wish to have one ride fits all need, then you can choose any American, UK or Japanese cars (plenty choices), but when you consider 5-10 years of age used car then the only choice you have is Japanese folks per below list of order: Prado (AWESOME) Xterra (AMAZING) Pajero (3.8 - Good, 3.5 - OK, 3.0 - NO) Pathfinder - (Post 2006 shape - NOOOOOO) The only American ride after 5 years of age can still ride good in sand is Jeep Wrangler or may be cherokee (not grand cherokee). These cherokee and Grand were awesome prior to 2004 shape, but hard to get one clean now, which has not been abused already. Ford explorer - NO Ford explorer - sport trac truck - Yes (with 2 inch lift) F-150 trucks - Yes, but expensive in maintenance Overall Japanese are more reliable and maintenance friendly that's why people choose them as a first choice especially in offroad.

  15. Awesome initiative and excellent choice of area @skumar83 Count me and Rahim bhai in with full support. I am so impressed to see the way you have compiled the whole drive thread for the first time, is absolutely perfect. Keep it up. Finally, we can taste some new style of driving this Friday. I am so excited that I can't wait for this one, especially after driving behind you and Basel in last drive for the first time.

  17. You are definitely old, people go dune bashing only on weekend for feeding their desert bug unlike daily job made you so bored. Secondly, it's called enthusiasm and not voluntarily going for a charity drive, lol. I think due to safari train track you were really got bored, as they are no way remotely close to any of our real dune bashing drives.
