Yeah you are right, 180 for 4 liter instead of 90 dhs for 4 liter is double the price but not at all expensive considering the quality and peace of mind while hitting your car at redline every week. One fuel tank cost 125 One engine cost 7000 - 12000 One engine swap cost 1500 - 3000 Downtime for busting engine: 7 days - a month time, in my case 3 months as sourcing rare engine is painful. And this 100 dhs extra on engine oil will last for 6K kms for offroad and 10K for road use.

Yeah very good made by and we forgot to ask this primary question. What do you mean by offroading? 1) hard core dune bashing, long hill climb 2) easy to medium dunes and tracks, camping. If you buy for 1) u can do 2) but not vice versa, as it has to be different animal for 1) than 2).

I bought a 2008 3.8 LWB for 18kAED in January. Needed a little bit of TLC but is technically perfect now and just done the 200,000kms major maintenance. Only meant as family car and for some camping and mall crawling. I understand your concern about having a toy car for camping and going offroad. But be aware that cars +15y old will need a lot of TLC and money thrown into it. You could be exposed to a 5-6 kAED bill at any given time. A clean decent 4800 Patrol that hasn't seen much desert is gonna cost you, and the locals are hunting these cars down too. However i love these cars and would love to own one, they are gonna cost you more than your existing Pajero i am afraid. My proposal to you would be to use your Pajero to learn the basic offroading skills and see where it takes you. By that time (5-6 months) you will probably understand more what you are really looking for in that weekend/toy car. The 3.8 is a capable offroader.

Personally I hate the way they look, and totally associated with ricers as they seem to be the only one who ge them. 1996 civic with neon under body lights cambered wheels and wing bigger than that of a double decker airbus A380 on the trunk lid, cheap rattle can sprayed wavy and ill fitting groundeffect kit.

Look only for the VTC 4800 model. Which only comes in a LWB configurations for those early years. The 4500 is like a church mouse in front of the VTC and avoid manual like the plague. Horrible box for offroading in the desert. Youll have to look very carefully as its a favourite car among the shabab and usually played around with quite a bit on and offroad. look for bone stock versions with 0 mods. straight body panels and no repaints, underneath look for bent axel tubes, chains around the drive shaft and petrol tanks and caved in petrol tanks. All signs of a pervious life spent offroading. Diff lock really isnt a requirementIts nice to have but not a must

Very true. I was looking for a Jeep Grand Cherokee some time back and came across a few. One looked like a good deal but when I saw and tested the car I told the guy the problems which it seems he was aware. After giving my price for the vehicle in all fairness with work to be done he just told me "Thanks for wasting my time" and walked off. I was like what a jerk. Never concerned myself with this rude guy and found myself a deal with a Jeep Commander. Plenty of cars out there, eventually you'll find a good one at the right price.

I haven’t seen anyone post the real reason why having too much oil in the engine is bad. If the oil level is too high and the crankshaft touches the surface, it will create bubbles in the oil as it dips in and out. Think of it like whisking an egg white. It doesn’t take long to turn the egg white into a nice thick foamy meringue. Well the same thing will happen to the oil. It doesn’t take long for all the oil to turn to foam and fill the engine. The big problem here is that the oil pump is designed to pump liquid. It’s not designed to pump foam and bubbles so critical engine parts aren’t getting properly lubricated. The bearings, rings etc soon heat up and seize due to oil starvation. Having too much oil can cause same effect as if you ran the engine with no oil in it.

I have used this Mitsubishi same Engine oil which is manufactured by LUKOIL (check at backside) and within 1000 kms it turned black and started giving some strange knocking noise from my Pajero engine. Switch back to my all time favorite Mobil 1 and never heard those knocking again.

You can find that grade oil in both semi and full synthetic...just try to stick to same brand as different brand use different chemical compositions which can mess with the seals and gaskits in the long run...if you planning to keep the car long time...

@Michael sammyyou can check in Castrol. They have it in full synthetic.

Mike, Welcome to Carnity - Hope you are enjoying ! Why would you want to buy a weekend offroader since you have 3.8 with those MRR dobinsons lift kit, I would suggest to join Newbie drives and then to decide as you progress that if you really want to have a weekend offroader for those roller coaster above intermediate drives that the LWB Paj sotck might find it challenging !! Hope to catch up soon for the upcoming drives next month, as Ill be traveling out this week. Cheers!

P.S : Hate to break it to you buy your 10 year old Pajero is not new or expensive anymore. You can get them between 25-30k now

Thats caled the 5th generation Y61 Patro. Well taken care of Ive seen them cross 500k even. Yes you are right scrapyards are full of patrol bits, specially in dhaid. If the car checks out, engine tranny, drive train is solid, then go for it, specially if you can get it for around 10k it wouldnt be a bad deal as the 4500 with 350k plus mileage go for around 15 ish. As for transmission just leave it in D, seems like you have no offroad experience would be recommended to sign up for a newbie drive here to learn the basics

Thats because the swb and 2001 are the 4500. 4800 VTC is a totally different monster plus yours had the absolute shit ratio manual transmission. The engine wasnt as big of a let down as tge manual transmission ratios were. 1st too short and 2nd too long. Could never get it into the right power and torque band required for high climbs

Why not just buy a nice steering wheel instead? You can buy a nice 3 spoke momo wheel trimmed in alcantara for not much money. For me, steering wheel covers are annoying as heck. You can’t feel the wheel properly and they can slip around at random and you lose control if you’re not squeezing it tight.

Its a proper tow hook install in the center, I meant vs tow hitch. Not side small hole ones. Its for recovering when stuck in sand or mountain and not pulling boat/load

Please advise i have a pajero 3.8 LWB 2010 but its maintained and it is in a very good condition as i bought it brand new back in 2010. I'm thinking of buying a second hand car only for offroading and activities Hence i thought of buying a low budget car and customize it. I believe that Nissan patrol safari is one of most powerful cars when it comes to offroading. Do you recommend Nissan patrol safari? If yes which models i should look for and which models i should stay away? I saw couple of cars but at least they have 250k in mileage if not more is that okay ? Is it necessary to get car with diff lock ? Is it necessary the car has manual shift mood as in the gear of pajero? PS: I am looking for maximum of 20k aed

Both have 2 different functionalities. Can you elaborate a bit on why you ask this ? * A tow hook is a point that is used to "tow" your vehicle. It is also being used to recover your vehicle. * A tow hitch allows a car to pull a load, like a trailer, or something else. It also makes for a good and strong recovery point. If you are referring to recovery use only, then in both cases it will rely on how it is installed. a decent tow hitch will be connected to the chassis of the car on more than 1 bolting point, while a tow hook is in most cases just bolted onto one side of the car. Hence for recovery the tow hitch would be stronger and better in load distribution.

How do you expect me to step out in traffic to throw bucket of water? Only in stop and go traffic it drops the cooling little and become fine when moving or sitting idle in a breathable space like parking, road side, red light etc.

Ishould use 40 Even if its not fully synthetic? Bcz i found 10w40 at first but i think it was semi synthetic or not synthetic at all Please advise

Don't worry about the 5 or 10 as that temperature you won't experience here in uae but if the end number be 40 then it would be much better as 40 the viscosity will be good till ambient temperature of 50 plus ℃ And I guess that oil has a light brown tint like light caramel...

5w30 SN Fully synthetic its Mitsubishi original recommended oil, its my first time to use it i heard from my pajero owners friends that's ideal with our car, lets see

But as far as i know all pajero drivers uses the push side manual option when offroading, might be the pajero not as powerful to be drove on D I hope any #pajero drivers support my statment or correct me if am wrong. Anyone who consistently falls asleep when driving should be lead outside and be shot with a ball of their own dung. If that doesn’t work they should be taken for the “UAE desert safari” where they are dropped in the middle of the desert and forced to follow the mirage until they die of thirst. I hate shitty drivers like this. I try to drive safe and do what I can to stay alive and get home safe but it only takes one of these assholes to ruin the day of many people.

I had 2006 swb manual gear and it never climbed big red, let alone iftar bowl, faya and other tall dunes. It was a total disappointment. Stay away from that shape I think 2004 - 2010. @baselsm83 had old shape nissan patrol, maybe 2001 model, if he is reading this then he can share his experience as I have seen him doing quiet good offroading with us. In 20k budget try for Xterra, as you might get on road used version. Best for offroad + less maintenance. Second could be jeep wrangler as a play toy but not very reliable tbh and expensive to maintain compare to nissan. Third could be old shape Jeep Cherokee, 3.5 pathfinder until 2003 shape, but finding these clean one now is very difficult.

Nah bruv thats not the one. I remeber those well, almost every taxi you sat in in the 80s and early 90s had one.Had a thick plasrick cord you wrapped around the steering wheel. This is proper leather with only inseam stiching I did see them being sold on ebay a few years back

Mine is while accelerating same as @Keithryan mentioned in his main description. But its not annoying everyone at the garage were i fixed my car 5 pajeros were there and all had the same problem but they didn't even notice until i tried their cars i started by then to get convened by them that is normal but for me it was not as i bought the car brand new back then in 2010.

Problem is there is no one size fits all here. There are so many things that can create a "tok" Noises are always hard to trace and rectify Onr can only inspect and then go down a list and tick them off one by one. Having a Land Cruiser used 365 days for safaris it became a never ending quest to chase weird click, clongs, rattle, squeaks and clangs. How do you think I became a DIY mechanic and git knowlegable abiut cars because every day off or any freetime was either spent under the car or in a garage.

unfortunatey cant fix that NATO style hook on most cars. As thats bolted on to the rear crash bar mounted directed to the frame. Put that on todays plastic pigs and see the entire rear end fly off! LOL

Sometimes driving back from a night drive I feel sleepy and nothing better than some 😴 by the rad side, but I converse with @Gaurav bhai over the radio which keeps me awake. The rest of the way I'm repeating the events of the drive to write my trip report which keeps me awake too.

Hi @Michael sammy, Totally agree with @Srikumar as his experience with Pajero is an advantage as he owned one for many years, he knows the good and the bad of it ;), As mentioned removing the rear lip should be only a 10min job if you have the right tools or any garage that can do it for you, I was able to manage newbie drive in full stock without breaking anything but from the 2nd onwards it was difficult to manage without any damages so its highly recommended to have those skid plates installed especially the rear ones (Front and rear plates for sale in the UAE paj group, You can check it out). Additionally the lift kit that you are running now should be able to save you from not having any damages to your footstep that I faced over the last Intermediate drive. All the best and enjoy !!

I just noticed that i have a partial photo of the bottle were they kept the extra oil. Is that color of the oil is normal after 50km drive?

If your cooling system is working correctly it shouldnt make any difference. Peak hot hours in a traffic jam ambient temperature is attrcious all over, heat coming from all around including the tarmac. Check your aux fans, main fan, gas levels, evaporator in the dash, valve and everything is A OK then it only means your compressor is tired. Next time check while stationary but reving up the engine for a10 seconds does it get cooer or not

Overfilling almost always leads to premature seal failure and increased zeal in fuel consumption 1 cm in many cars means 250 ml to half liter Better say to measure is warm up then let it sit for 30 other 40 minutes Or more precise one is to leave it overnight and check 1st thing in morning

Well there are only two ways to reach engine oil: Drain plug or dispstick. From opening drain plug you will risk of loosing more than required, unless you have some precise control over a spanner. Dipstick is much safer and controlled way to reduce with the suction pipe. As a general rule of thumb you should not overfill engine oil above the max line and 1 cm sounds quite as much. I always buy an extra 1L bottle to top next day rather than overfilling. @Barry, @treks and @shadow79 might advise the drawback of overfilling as Im not that technically educated.

One way is to see the prices available for a similar condition vehicle on Dubizzle and then start negotiating to get it as low as possible. If you have decided the vehicle and you are buying it on cash, it would be good to carry the cash with you and do one final negotiation before getting the transfer done. A seller also would like to sell his vehicle at the earliest and it's a good time to negotiate if you are serious to buy.

WOW, What a brilliant topic shared with well research facts and remedies. Here are my two cents from driving after every week night offroad drive. Off course nothing beats a power nap if you are super tired but these few little tricks help me every time. Spray water on your face. Keep Evian spray can or normal water spray gun for plants handy. Chewing gum, mint, candy or soda, just something sweet or sour to kick up. Eating nuts, crisp, chocolate to prevent yawning and sleep. Calling and speaking to someone on phone, of course on hand free mode. High tempo music (dance numbers) to keep your body esp head and neck moving.
