You are correct @Desert Dweller. I had moved on to an xterra, but I'm going for a newbie drive in Al Qudra this week to test as well as to familiarize myself with the vehicle.

UPDATE: I have now bought the car!! https://dubai.dubizzle.com/motors/used-cars/jeep/grand-cherokee/2020/6/10/aed1714month-2015-jeep-grand-cherokee-summ-2/ Settled for 80K. Ideally, I would have gotten something without air suspension and with two hooks attached etc, but we'll see how this one turns out! With the summer coming closer, we will go a little deeper into the dangers of being exposed to the extreme heat UAE brings to us. During off-roading, some activities such as recovery work, replacing tyres, and dealing with pop-outs, are physically demanding, and many of us who are in office jobs are not trained to cope with this amount of heat. Luckily with the help of some basic things, we can minimize the risk of below mentioned issues. The following risks are identified: Heat exhaustion: Warning signs: A person may suddenly look pale. Heart rate will increase and the victim may complain of feeling dizzy and nauseous. A feeling of weakness is also common. What to do: Seek shade immediately and lie down, especially if you’re feeling lightheaded. Apply a cold compress to the forehead and remove extra layers. Heat Stroke: Warning signs: Heat stroke is a type of hypothermia where the body temperature is greatly elevated. If not treated immediately it can be fatal. Symptoms are similar to those of a heart attack, along with nausea, headaches, hallucinations, difficulty in breathing, and agitation, What to do: apply cool water to the skin and place ice packs under the arms to reduce the temperature quickly. Preventive Measures: • Sip some water all day long, rather than just when you are thirsty. If you are thirsty it means you are already dehydrated. • Wear light clothing that can "breathe", but also wear sunblock and keep your head protected with a cap or hat. • Some fruit and vegetables can re-hydrate the body even more than water. Carry some in your cooler. • Water is important, but too much water can be dangerous as it can cause electrolyte depletion. Limit yourselves to 2-3 liters per day. • When recovering a vehicle in full sun, limit your exposure time and take some rest every couple of minutes. Because you are focused on the task at hand, you might completely forget the heat and become dizzy and exhausted. • If at some point you feel unwell, inform your club members immediately. When driving, inform immediately over the radio so the convoy can be stopped. • Keep an eye out for your fellow club members. It is relatively easy to recognize above symptoms in somebody else. Let them take appropriate rest. Please do share your tips, hints, experiences !

I feel it's not just the power, but other factors like gear ratios that also matter. All the power in the world but a messed up gearing doesn't help in long hill climbs. A straight 6 engine giving only 190 hp but having the right gear ratio can also do the Iftar bowl climb from the center. See the video. VID-20200615-WA0037.mp4

The best advice I was ever given is that a Cheap [insert luxury marque] is the most expensive one you can buy. By the time they get to the 2nd hand market with attractive prices they are out of warranty and normally need some big bit of expensive engineering that the owner does not want to pay for (timing chain/transmission). I am with most of the comments above. I looked at dozens of these supposedly 'cheap' luxury wagons when I got here. I am not sure how many times the RR air suspension was on its last legs. X5 is a beast, until you have to pay to repair it (again) and every one I looked at that was in budget was missing some major service record. I was so desperate, that in the end I bought a Jeep!

@syed salman raza since there is no hotel close to the meeting point, you can go for any hotel in Sharjah or better close to Ghusais in Dubai , it would take you just over 30 - 25 minutes to reach the meeting point. If you click on the link to google maps on your PC, click on nearby and than from the pop-up select hotels, it will give you a few options. As you scroll through the hotel list on the left, it will give you the travel time on top of the maps on the right of the screen.

So we will only do the desert driving sitting inside our cars at all the times and leave the drive without socializing or coming close to each other. I'd rather have a Corolla than a trailhawk. Rather than another shitty jeep with the hellcat motor in it Gaurav had the ZJ with the bigger magnum engine. Was still a jeep like I said it was fast and powerful but still shit and still a jeep that's. Why he sold it in 3 months! Lol Like they say never meet your heroes. And if you really still have that itch. Import one from the US dime a dozen there. Less than 20k you would have one parked in your garage with in a month or two

Totally agree on the gearing issue. I had 2006 Nissan Patrol SWB in 2008 and it never climbed up Bidayer, let alone IFB and Faya, because 4.5 liter engine in patrol was not having same gearing as in 4.8 liter engine. 50-60% pink rock - Max Climb.

Anyways screw sports car-esque handling mandling nobody gives a crap about it, I'm pretty sure your Mrs doesn't neither do you and neither do I, if you want handling buy yourself a sports coupe, not a luxury SUV. Like I said and everybody pretty much agrees is stay away from the BMW. I technically have a Land Rover but the engine is directly out of the BMW parts bin it shares the same engine as the 1st gen BMW X5 and earlier model 7 series. the BMW M62tub and that is the thing that has gone wrong on it most. As most know I havent bought a non Land Rover product in over 12 years now ( save for that brief period I had a sheep). 7 to 12 Land Rovers in that much time 2 Discovery series 1 and 5 Range Rovers. And this BMW engined Land Rover has been the least reliable among them all and till date has had the most work done on it out of any car Ive ever owned by myself and my LR garages , and this is not just an anecdotal story within 2 months of me buying it two other friends bough the same exact cars as well as its the same story there also. The 2010 Range Rover should be fine IMO but do expect bills every now and then, because remember just because you are buying it for 30k doesn't mean it is a 30k car. This was over a half a million dhs when it rolled off the showroom floor and so you have to treat is as such. But don't worry I know a very skilled and very reasonable priced LR specialist right here in Shj. But if all of this is not your cup of tea then I suggest You can always look into a early to mid 2000s Lx470. reliable as fek' can literally go 500k kms plus and still drive like new with 0 issues just needs a timing belt every 100k and you can drive is proper off road in the dunes as well or the cheap as chips much more roomy and brawny infinit QX56 Navigator is a great car something I have considered myself but that Triton V8 engine has a few bad habits depending on which one you are getting from spitting out spark plugs to chewing up cam phasers But a second hand Cayenne only if you don't like money. BUT do buy and own a Range Rover once in your life even if it is for a short while, until Bentley and Rolls Royce came out with SUVs of their own this was the closet you could get to that level of opulent luxurious drive specially in a SUV format for 1/100th the price. And like once my friend said after he sat in a new to me range rover. Doesn't matter which one, new or old, but once your get it, you definitely know its a Range Rover, nothing like it.

Thanks @sertac, but most of the cars you have suggested are huge bulky cars. The LR4 suggested is an Import and we are not comfortable with that. Also I do not like the Ford reputation any more. @Frederic you have given me a good option, i was told by one of the German Car dealer not to go for Audi Q7 but Q5 is OK, seems to be driven a bit too much and asking price seems high for that much mileage. Anybody can give me reliability issues for Q5, I have seen some low mileage and newer ones at attractive prices and I think with the size my wife could well be interested in these. Still waiting for @desertdude with his unique knowledge to learn more about his beloved brands and beyond.

I also leave about 15 minutes before 6 for morning drives - but I follow roads without cameras (at least for first 15 minutes :-))

Volvo indeed makes good cars and people all around the world appreciate their safety and gizmos. Matching the safety level is actually mandatory since few years now so almost all "Good Manufacturer" lives at par with those safety standards, as it has become an industry norm than a feather in a cap. Coming to "SUPER BAD" resale value let me explain that it goes much deeper and beyond than just the monetary loss, even if you can afford to loose over 60-70% of the car value in 3 years. Because any car resale value is purely based on the market dynamics and demand because of its: Performance Reliability Quality Ease of spare parts availability - new and used Long lasting in GCC harsh climate. As we don't marry a spouse because she has a wonderful pink gown, but we marry because she is understanding, dependable, strong and reliable. Same way buying a family car worth 150K for driver assist features is a way too long shot. I understand that you have made up your mind, but please before buying: Do test drive with those driver assist features and make them justify for all the odds that you are getting into. Do test drive other brands, they may not have futuristic driver assist features but they have pass the test of time. Little above league - Lexus GX, BMW X5, Audi Q7 - Go for little older model (to fit in 150k) Little below league - Patrol, Land Cruiser My personal recommendations as per priority- 2017 Lexus GX460 (Highest Recommendation) (150-160K) 2016 Lexus GX460 (130-140K) 2014-15 Lexus LX570 2018 Toyota Land Cruiser 2017 Lincoln Navigator (if you need 7 seats with "True luxury") 2016 Cadillac Escalade (if you need 7 seats with "True luxury") 2016-17 GMC Denali (if you need 7 seats with "True luxury")

Well If you are looking for confirmation that yes XC90 is a great ride and checks all your boxes well that obviously isn't going to happen. Personally I don't know why you are so adamant about these driver assist features that they are turning into deal breaker. And what are you on about LR not being off road capable? Are we talking about the same car here. The LR3 is a different car than the discovery. The "new" discovery I agree is useless. Not the the LR3 or even 4. These are the boxy double roof beasts which come with adjustable height suspension as standard and a V8. And they are comfortable as fek on road beat any Japanese luxury SUV in that dept and extremely capable off road right out the box.

@Shadab Khan not quite sure, but seems you have already convinced yourself to go for the Volvo XC90, Although a nice car but my advise to check for 6 - 7 year old Volvos going for under 15K so that is a huge loss in about 3 years time. As for the Disco I have been surprised by @Pickey Singh who had performed very well over several newbie drives, maybe he can give you a better idea. I used to have an old 1998 Disco 1 which was very capable at all levels once you got the feel of it. Never seen a Volvo on sands and there are none in our club, so you might be the reference point in future if you decide to go for it. I would rather go for a Luxury vehicle for my family comfort, and separate vehicle for off-roading. Look at it this way, if your AED 150k car break down in the middle of the desert and is also your family car would you be able to leave it behind until you find a solution to bring it out to the road and to a garage or the dealership? Plus I am not comfortable with all the new age technology which is not tested enough and with sand or water going into the electronics could further make it dangerous for off-roading. Just my point of view from what I have seen over the past 12 years of off-roading.

Go to that same guy again - strictly - and ask if metal bumper with 2 rubber bump stops are allowed...? After hearing his answer, you will understand my real feeling behind the above post In your Y62 case, off course I fully agree trimming is better for initial newbie-fewbie level drives.

Gaurav is right of course, but few people carry water consumption calculators, and when they do, they don't always take them seriously. Nonetheless, a rule of thumb that I learned during my military service in the Namib desert is that drinking a liter of water every hour (spread out over an hour) keeps you more evenly hydrated than drinking a liter of water once every hour. Heat stroke is not cool. Last time it happened to me I ended up in bed for a week and I couldn’t move. It feels like flu but worse. Water isn’t always enough if you’re sweating so much. Pocari sweat or another isotonic drink is a better option sometimes.
