  2. Welcome to the COVID 19 "new normal" lifestyle with restrictions and precautions for everyone safety. Moving forward and respecting authorities guidance all desert drives will be done under strict control. No Gathering | No Briefing | No BBQ | No Eating Together | No Touching | No Hugging MUST READ: Not following these rules and precautions = Not allowed to drive. We are only allowed to drive through the desert, as we are driving on the road now. So we will only do the desert driving just by sitting inside our cars at all the times and leave the drive without socializing or coming close to each other. Just like before we like to continue our desert drives through out the year, but this time we need your immense support to understand the strict control and to help everyone follow them all the time. For members who are fasting, they can break their fast discreetly and convoy will be stopped during that time and until they offer their prayer. How to maintain "STRICT" Social Distancing Meeting point will be set slightly (100m - 200m) inside the desert track. So, that you individually deflate your tires on the tarmac before reaching the meeting point. While deflating tires, stop cars 10 meters away from any other car. Drive signup on calendar will be closed on Thursday morning by 9 AM. Convoy numbering and briefing will be posted here on this drive post before 6 PM on Thursday. All participants need to read & acknowledge the briefing by clicking "Totally Agree" reaction Switch on your radio when you reach the meeting point on the set frequency advised by the trip lead in the critical briefing here. Once all set, trip lead will start the drive as before. Refusal and Recoveries with Social Distancing Every drive will have 1 lead Marshal and 1 or 2 supporting senior members/crew. Whenever there is a stuck or refusal, only Marshal / Senior Member / Crew is allowed to handle the situation. Everyone else including the stuck car driver, stay inside the car - AT ALL TIMES. Marshal / Senior Member / Crew is only allowed to step out to access the situation and do the recoveries: They will wear mask and gloves at all times when they are outside their car. They will try to help self recover through the radio guidance. If not they will use required recovery gear and do the needful (shovel, tug or winch, as required). If at any time Marshal require help, then only you are allowed to step out by wearing face mask and gloves at all times. Drive completion and inflation Now, there will not be any gathering or sitting down together for food-break like before. Once drive is finished, after reaching the tarmac, everyone is requested to move away 50-100 meters before starting their inflation. For drivers having no compressor, can head to the near by fuel station. If drive is ending at a place where there is no fuel station near by, then trip lead will inform in advance so that drivers having their own compressor can join only. 3. Mine is 8 mm, which is enough IMO. Of course it should come with a bracket to protect the radiator.

  5. Definitely I will tell you as I am not sure if we are supposed to discuss garage names here. @Srikumar I was under the impression that anything 6 mm or more was better and hence got then fixed as I felt they were pretty solid to take the brunt as the radiator was very low in xterra. Awaiting opinions from other xterra owners here , which will help others who are planning to put a skid plate on their xterra.

  6. Looking great @Chaitanya D, honestly i have been checking with so many garages and the least i could get is 1100 aed. It would be great if you can let me know where i can get a similar plate.

  9. Thanks everyone for your cooperation. Convoy will be published tomorrow. We have 2 on the waiting list so if anyone will not be able to attend please RSVP and let us know as that will open up a space for them. It would be a real shame to have an open space when there is so much demand at the moment. Thanks

  10. @Janarthan I have put a similar skid plate 10 mm and it feels solid. Different garages charge between 800 to 1000 max. So check with other garages or fabricators who can do it at a good price for you.

  11. Hi @Gaurav attached picture which is actually 10mm and quoting me 1100 including radiator bracket and installation. Is it worth it or something over priced.

  16. As we have been respecting authorities guidance & Carnity COVID guidelines to resume desert drives with caution by keeping social distance and wearing mask at all times outside the vehicle Unfortunately few off-roaders have difficulty in understanding and abiding these guidelines. As we all are in this together, so we all have to help each other to remind. Failing to abide below list of restriction will result in an immediate ban from Carnity Off-road Club: FIRST WARNING Minimum 1 month ban from joining any Carnity off-road Club drives. Written warning will be issued on your Carnity profile. SECOND WARNING Minimum 6 month ban from joining any Carnity off-road Club drives. Written warning will be issued on your Carnity profile. 18. Defenders were very good right up until 1997 because that was the last year they offered a proper petrol V8 engine. After that all Defenders switched to a pathetic 4cyl diesel engine out of a Ford Transit Van.ater they went to a turbo diesel 5cyl known as TD5 and then again a turbo charged 4 cylinder diesel. Also they were priced like luxury SUVs. The last old school Defender fully loaded one was around 300,000dhs. And you basically get a farm truck from the 80s for that. The Defender didn't even change its dashboard until the mid 80s Most of the love affair with Defenders is from old British farmers and country folk, Just the same as the Texas ranch owner loves his Ford F150 pickup. Also since the Defender almost literally stayed unchanged most of it is basically nostalgia. Because they grew up with the same car and basically the same car was still available. Off road wise it is or was pretty capable. By that I mean the European version of off roading with it's anemic diesel engine Which is basically mud plugging andd some rough country roads and a few river crossing. After it lost its V8 petrol engine it pretty much lost favour for desert and dune bashing type of off roadinf here in the GCC plus it being over priced. Although there still is a defender fan base who basically use it for soft roading and overlanding My favourite is the NAS spec D90 i.e 2dr short wheel base with an automatic transmission and a 4.0 distributorless petrol V8 other than that even for only off roading I would never even think of it. It looks cool no doubt but drives like shit and is extremely outdated. But would I buy a 1997 NAS Spec V8 for 100k plus No way. Not unless I was made of money and had it coming out of my ears. Save for the grumpy old luddites the Defender really needed to die because LR basically ignored it for 20 plus years while they concentrated on their other money makers. Even Mercedes didn't ignore their G Wagon and kept updating it as time went on and only last year for the first time it was made did a totally new car from the ground up but still keeping it's boxy shape. Which was it's key selling point and the other being the massive biturbo V8. But it still drove like an ox cart. But people overlooked that because it featured all the modern bells and whistles and that massive PowerPlant I mentioned earlier. The Defender literally had nothing going for it save for a small select group of grumpy old men who don't like change Defenders were very good right up until 1997 because that was the last year they offered a proper petrol V8 engine. 20. Like I said this isn't a Range Rover. Just like the Evoque isn't a Range Rover neither is this. This is just Land Rover trying to cash in on the Range Rover name and heritage. And to their credit pretty successful in conning people into buying it thinking they were buying a Range Rover. It's really just a glorified LR3 The only thing it shares with the Range Rover is the AJV8 motor and nothing else.

And btw, I was busy whole day and wanted to reply that please dont be scare and too crazy about used cars in UAE as majority of them are good and in reasonably re-usable condition and not like your salt lake rotten cars. Take it easy, enjoy and i'm sure after few years you will have different experience of owning cars in UAE.

  32. UPDATE: I have now bought the car!! https://dubai.dubizzle.com/motors/used-cars/jeep/grand-cherokee/2020/6/10/aed1714month-2015-jeep-grand-cherokee-summ-2/ Settled for 80K. Ideally, I would have gotten something without air suspension and with two hooks attached etc, but we'll see how this one turns out! Acknowledgement: Literally all of you helped me get a car that I feel good about. You helped me calibrate my expectations, gave me a reality check, and offered your generous help and time. For that, a BIG THANK YOU (in no order): @sertac @Frederic @Rahimdad @Chaitanya D @Gaurav @desertdude @Brette I will update this thread once the car has gone through (in this order): 1) A mechanic for fault finding so I can get it fixed while I still have warranty 2) Off-road upgrades to be able to join newbie drives (still figuring this out)

  40. One of my friend warned me about the way i write this. Better if i explain what i meant. I said get rid of the car because of my past and current experience. I am loving old Jeeps and i am spending enormous amount of money to keep them on the road. I had 2000 Jeep Cherokee. It started with few issues, i fixed them, than month or week later another came, i fixed it. Than it became too much and mechanic told me it will came to the way after a point. I believed him, i wanted to believe because i really like the car. I ended up with a huge lost over the car worth. I literally spend more than car`s own worth. I sold it. Currently i am a proud owner of a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee again i spent more than car`s own worth and i know if i want to spend i will spend another 5000 easily for fixing small small issues. Why i am doing that. Because i was dreaming about these cars when i was younger and i am really attached to it. Any person having piece of mind will say i am stupid. I am also saying to all of my friends to do what i say, dont do what i do. Another samples. My mother have a X5 BMW. I am at least telling her once a week to sell it but she for that budget she cant get anything better and she is definitely not interested to buy a Japanese made car so she keeps it but it has a huge maintenance cost. My friend from the company had a BMW Z4 coupe. Very rare nice sports car. That was his dream car and he enjoyed it for a year or two with joy. Than car start giving problems. First we fixed, second we fixed than i told him to sell it. He choose to keep it, after that in a week car gave 3 different problem and 1 break on the road(car needed to be towed to the mechanic). At the end he sold it with a huge lost. So the reason i told you to get rid of the car is these experiences i had. I believe you made a mistake while you are buying this car, you probably didint inspect it properly, since it is fully agency maintained you bought it with thrust. If you specially love that car keep it like i do, i am sure there are good mechanics can fix it. But otherwise as others said it looks like around 15.000aed cost and no guarantee after you fix it other things may come one by one, than you may end up with a huge lost.
