  1. Hey @Carnity and everyone that stumbles along this post. I’ve been thinking about posting this as a general discussion or an advice page for good amount of time. My goal for this page is to get every off-roader together to share how they store their off-road gear during a drive (potentially even sharing pictures) what I’m hoping this should do is show our fellow members with a little less experience how we store are gear in the back of our cars safely for drives above Newbie (because no one wants a flying compressor or shovel in their face during an intense drive) of course this page is really meant to highlight Safety. As every car is different I encourage people with different cars to show how they store their gear as for jeeps (like mine) it’s relatively straight forward I’ll start off with my current setup So I use the advantage of the jeeps mount points on the surface of the flooring of the boot. We have 3 points per side totally 6. Personally after some time driving in the desert I notice two straps in a crisscross pattern holds down the gear the tightest while my shovel is held by a separate strap on the rear of the sports bar or (roll cage) this is a new setup to me so I’ll keep my fellow jeepers updated if I happen to change my setup or require two straps for the shovel (remember for the shovel location keep it tight but not too tight! We don’t want to damage the plastic exterior of the sports bar) Thanks everyone who happens to share
  2. Having a refusal or getting completely stuck is something nobody should feel guilty about, since it's part of the off-roading game. It’s also an essential experience in your learning. Somehow, as long as you can understand what happened so you won’t repeat the same mistake over and over, it’s a must to improve. There are hundreds of reasons why you can get stuck. Some of them don’t directly depend on the driver (it can be related to an engine issue, the terrain, the climate, etc.), while others are just mistakes. Some of them are clear and obvious, others are more unpredictable and difficult to identify… As a big fan of @Rahimdad’s What Went Wrong ? thread, it came to my mind that we could simply adapt his brilliant idea by analyzing, not accidents, but stucks, and try to make together a list of all the possible reasons behind them. Please do share here your guesses, explanations... and videos. I’ll start easy, with one of my best stucks this year, which happened in Area 53 two weeks ago (I borrowed the footage from @Javier M). So... who can tell us why I got stuck here ? Stuck_1.mp4
  3. My Prado is is around 2.5 ton and comes with a bottle type jack. Do I need to have a floor type jack and does it have to be over 2 ton rating? I notice that the 2 ton floor jack is advertised most frequently and is also compact compared to the 3 ton one. In addition, as I don’t intend to lift the whole car but rather a portion of it, is the 2 ton one sufficient or is it unsafe? Await good advice!
  4. Hello everyone, I am considering switching to a SWB car. Already test driven SWB Pajeros and Wranglers; automatic and manual. I remember reading somewhere that Wranglers from a certain year till another year were to avoid due to some issues they had. Any thoughts and opinions? I want it to off-road. My drive to work is cut down to 10 minutes only (although I've been working from home since March 2020), so that won't be a problem. I don't necessarily want a super cheap one, as the resale value of Wranglers holds pretty well, I think. Thank you in advance!
  5. This drive is organized in full compliance with the COVID19 guidelines. We expect every member that joins this drive to go through below information and and strictly follow these guidelines in order not to jeopardize someone's health, and to ensure we can keep organizing these drives safely. MUST READ AND TOTALLY AGREE: COVID19 Precautions MUST READ AND TOTALLY AGREE: BAN POST Two Way Radio Guidelines Every Offroader brings his own radio, programmed to the frequencies described in below advice topic. We will not share spare radios or program your radio on the drive. If you need assistance in programming the radio, post a topic on the Carnity website with your questions and we will help you out. Make sure your radio is fully charged. It will be your only way of communication while driving. Before buying, please carefully read below advice so you are informed properly on which model / cost / shops... No radio = No drive. It is an essential tool and you should make sure you bring it on every drive and learn/practice how to use it. 7. When joining Carnity Off-road Club, there will come a time that you’ll need to start looking for deflators, pressure gauges, compressors, flag, etc... Dragon Mart is a wonderful shopping paradise but finding the item you need is indeed sometimes a daunting task. So I listed below some shops and their locations that might be of help: Off-road Flag Section: EA Address: EA01 Shop: S&D Autoparts Deflator tool and pressure gauge Section: EB Address: EBD05 Shop: Taizhou Yian Trade Two Way Radio Lots of options, but the BA section has the most shops. Look out for the big CRONY labeled shop. They have the Motorola MT777 = 120 - 150 AED. Crony MT777 = 80 - 120 AED Also the Baofeng UV-5R is still popular and easy to find. Costs about 75 AED. Floor Jack & Tools JZX shop in section EA, no. EAA25 2 Ton floor jack with swivel neck = 120 - 150 AED (Recommended) Tool kit = 50-100 AED Compressor Mainly available in BA section. Have a walk and haggle a bit. The Camel logo brand is pretty good. Available in single or twin cylinder model. Single cylinder = 100 -150 AED Twin Cylinder = 150 -200 AED (Recommended) Please take note that we are not affiliated with these shops nor do we give any guarantees about their items. We solely provide the location where you can find these most common items to save your time.
  8. Is it maybe an idea to share important docs in the Off-road whatsapp group? Like; -Frequencies -How to guides -Emergency numbers (UAE rescue, Police, Hospitals) I think this will be an added value, docs are instant accessible, instead of going to the forum and search the correct topic. When posting a new drive, you can make the members aware that they can find the documents with the applicable info in the WhatsApp group. Food for thought.
  9. Hi everyone, I'm looking for a second hand car but I'm kinda lost when it comes to which one to go for. I've been considering Wrangler, Land Cruiser, FJ Cruiser, Montero Sport... Definitely a 4x4 or SUV as I camp a lot, sleeping in the car (for now I use my friend's Montero Sport). The dilemma is that I have been reading a lot about the best car or 2nd or 3rd best for off-roads, but I'd also need it to go to work (I live in Dubai but work in Ajman...). So... here goes my requirements: - A 7 seater preferably. Or at least a big car that I can manage to put the back seats down and use it to sleep, as I don't always feel safe while camping on my own. - I would need it for off-road driving. I always end up driving in wadis, over big rocks, mountains, gravel, in the desert, etc. I'm also planning a road trip driving around Africa this summer... - As I mentioned above, I'd need to use it to go to work. I can't afford having 2 cars... - Budget is around 40K. Can push it to 50K for the right car. - GCC specs, not too many km... Please, I can change tyres and have basic knowledge of mechanics, and I'm also willing to take more advanced mechanic courses or whatever if needed. So no 'this is not an option for a woman' BS. Thank you in advance Jamy
  10. Sorry for this photos but it’s something that all off-roaders (and passengers) should see and always keep in mind. Never ever throw plastics or anything.
  11. I never mentioned sedans- I said "rent a suitable vehicle", which is invariably a diesel truck. Sure, you can do a road trip in Africa with an SUV- provided you don't venture too far (50 -100 km) from major centres. The roads around most major cities are generally in reasonable condition, but anything beyond about 100 km or so from a major city (and considerably less in some cases) becomes an overland expedition to the next major city. If you don't want to do cities, any distance between two points in Africa is an overland expedition, and especially so in central Africa, where nobody has been able to build permanent roads- or railways for that matter. However, large sections of the Trans-African Highway system (the parts of it that run around the edges of the continent, at least) have been paved and/or upgraded during the past ten years or so, but there are no guarantees that any part of the Trans-African Highway system will remain paved from one year to the next. If you ever end up in washed out section of the road system in the dry season, when big trucks have reduced it to series of deep trenches that can be deeper than a meter, and run for tens of kilometers, you will find that the limited suspension articulation of an SUV- any SUV- will leave you crested on these trench tops every few meters. Then again,if you ever end up in a washed out section of the road system in the wet season, you need to be in a group of at least four trucks to get through meter-deep mud traps that can run for tens of kilometers. If you can get past the dozens of big trucks that have been bogged down for months in a track that is barely wide enough to allow two ox-carts to pass each other, that is. In fact, a few years ago I had to abandon one of my expedition grade vehicles in such a mud trap because there was no way to get it out of the mud from behind an 18- wheeler that had sunk into the mud up to the top of it's wheels, and from in front of another 18-wheeler that had followed me into the mud trap before the other vehicles in my expedition could follow me in. For all I know, both trucks and my vehicle are still stuck there. So, no, SUV's without proper 4-wheel drive, low range, winches, lockable diffs, rated recovery points, and at least 28 inches of suspension articulation in Africa are not good idea if you venture away from the big centers.
  12. If not, anyone has an idea of where thoses dunes can be ?

I am planning a full day drive from Bidayer towards Pink Rock and on to Kalba Maliha The last time we were there we found some amazing rolling dunes, and look forward to some similar excitement. When: 3 Nov, 2017 Friday Meeting time: 9:00 AM, convoy will move sharp at 9:15 AM Where: Old Emarat Petrol Station at Lahbab R/A GPS Coordinate: https://goo.gl/maps/gQd1UszDdSG2 Level of drive: Absolute Newbie - Newbie - Fewbie - Expert - Advance - All are welcome Type of Car: Any proper 4x4 with front and back tow hooks and 10 inches of ground clearance Plan: Morning drive from Bidayer to Pink rock What to bring along: Morning snacks - whatever you like with little extra to share, water, liquids, smiles, stories, enthusiasm and willingness to learn. 14. Wow. We have done everything from an absolute newbie drive for those stepping into the sands for the first time, to a slightly more demanding drive in some absolutely bad weather, to the mesmerizing sands of Lisali to a man made lake in the desert in Al Qudra and recently the on-road scenic drive with slightly different kind of adventure in the waters of Khorfakkan in the past month. So what is next? The option was left to those who attended the last drive and the obvious choice was to find a natural lake in the middle of the desert. Is it true? Is it possible? A natural lake in the middle of the desert....You must be kidding me!!! But, Al Qudra is a man-made lake and we have already been there!!!. Hold your hearts as that natural beauty exists and we are going to explore it this weekend. So what is the plan? Who can join? What can we expect? Plan is simple, we drive down to the desert where the natural lake makes it an oasis which we are in search for. Everybody can join, weather you have a 4x4, an AWD, a Saloon or even a bike, it is possible for all to join. Expect to be taken by surprise and we drive on the road towards some awesome dunes and a shimmering blue surface starts to fill the the light brown dunes, behold it is the lake that we all are searching for. For on-road drivers who jst want something new and different to do, this drive is for you. For off-roader who want a taste of the dune drive, lets do some off-roading that will set your pulses racing, this drive is for you. For those who love nature and photography, if you think you have some awesome photos during the day, just wait till the sun starts setting behind the mountains, find a favorable spot and lay your trap to capture some of the most beautiful views you can imagine, this drive is for you. Excited... Lets get down to the details... Once again I would like to thank all the active members of Carnity who have supported the drives by coming out in numbers and have shown the enthusiasm and the will to learn, the beauty of this area is the wonderful lake smack in the middle of the desert which can be reached by road making it a rare oasis in UAE. The plan would be to meet up at 10 am as per the below link and than head out to discover this hidden gem in the middle of the desert, for the Muslims we will find a mosque on the way where we can offer our Friday prayers, non-Muslims are requested to be patient during this time, we will than head to the lake and pick a gazebo under which we can set up camp and sit around and enjoy the lunch and chats where the secret of how this lake came about in the middle of the desert. It is a very interesting story. For those who would like to feel the sands under their wheels, this will be the time to head out and improve and polish our skills. They say always leave the best for the last, photograph enthusiasts would have hope fully found a nice spot by sunset which will mean you will take back memories which can never be replaced and the place will leave an imprint on your hearts for life. When : 24 February 2017 at 10:00 am Where : First Emarat Petrol station on Dubai - Al Ain Road after Outlet Mall. GPS Coordinate: https://goo.gl/maps/KD4Lath3cB42 Level of drive: All levels Plan: On-road drive, followed by some lunch, followed by some dune bashing for interested parties with proper 4x4s, ending with the shutterbugs bringing some shots that will live on long after the drive is over. What to bring along: Stuff for BBQ or lunch with a little extra to share with all, grill, charcoal, lighter fluid and BBQ meat or chicken, water, liquids, smiles, stories, enthusiasm and willingness to learn. and appreciate and the most important, you best cameras with the best lenses as you do not see this everyday in your life. In fact, many people will never know this hidden gem. Approximate finish time : 6 - 6:30 pm
